Chapter 1 - The prison gates opened at 8:07 in the morning.Evelyn Lane stopped walking.

For three years, she had imagined this moment.
Sometimes she imagined herself running.
Sometimes crying.
Sometimes standing outside the gate and screaming at the world for taking three years from her.
But now that it was real, she felt nothing.
Just cold.
A prison officer handed her the cardboard box containing the few possessions she was allowed to take home.
âGood luck, Ms. Lane.â
Evelyn nodded.
She stepped beyond the gate.
Freedom was supposed to feel enormous.
Instead, it felt strangely small.
Three years ago, she had entered prison as a wife.
Today, she left as a woman nobody knew what to call.
Former wife.
Convicted felon.
Traitor.
Victim.
Monster.
The newspapers had chosen the first version for her.
THE JEALOUS WIFE WHO ATTACKED HER CHEATING HUSBAND.
THE BASEBALL BAT WOMAN.
THE VENGEFUL BRIDE.
Nobody had cared about the details.
Nobody had cared that Michael had cheated with Olivia Bennett, the woman Evelyn had trusted since childhood.
Nobody had cared that Michael had grabbed Evelyn's wrist.
Nobody had cared that she had called 911 herself.
They only cared about the sound of the bat breaking the television.
That sound had become her identity.
Until now.
Evelyn stepped into the parking lot.
She expected an empty sidewalk.
Instead, a man was waiting near a black SUV.
He was holding a huge bouquet of sunflowers.
Evelyn recognized him instantly.
Daniel Mercer.
Michael's older brother.
The man who had refused to look at her during the trial.
The man who had not visited her once.
The man who had never answered her letters.
Evelyn's stomach tightened.
Daniel looked older.
His once-black hair was streaked with gray.
His jaw was thinner.
His face carried the exhausted expression of a man who had spent three years losing arguments with himself.
He walked toward her.
âEvelyn.â
She stared at him.
âWhy are you here?â
He held the flowers out.
She didn't take them.
âDaniel, I don't want anything from your family.â
âThese aren't from my family.â
âThen who are they from?â
Daniel looked directly into her eyes.
âMe.â
Evelyn almost laughed.
âAfter three years?â
âI know.â
âYou didn't write.â
âI know.â
âYou didn't visit.â
âI know.â
âYou watched me go to prison.â
Daniel's jaw tightened.
âYes.â
âThen why are you standing here?â
He lowered the flowers.
âBecause I was a coward.â
That answer surprised her.
Evelyn crossed her arms.
âI'm not interested in apologies.â
âThis isn't an apology.â
âThen what is it?â
Daniel glanced toward the parking lot.
Nobody was nearby.
He lowered his voice.
âMichael lied.â
Every muscle in Evelyn's body went rigid.
âWhat?â
âAbout the night you found him.â
She stared at him.
Daniel continued.
âHe lied to the police.â
Her heart started pounding.
âHe lied to the prosecutor.â
She couldn't breathe.
âAnd he lied to you.â
Evelyn shook her head.
âNo.â
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small black flash drive.
âThis proves it.â
She stared at the device.
âWhat is that?â
âEverything I should have shown your lawyer three years ago.â
Evelyn felt the cold disappear.
âWhat does it prove?â
Daniel looked toward the prison gate.
Then back at her.
âIt proves Michael planned for you to find him.â
Silence.
Evelyn's lips parted.
âNo.â
âHe wanted you angry.â
âNo.â
âHe knew exactly what would happen if you came home that night.â
âYou're lying.â
Daniel shook his head.
âI wish I were.â
Evelyn stared at the flash drive.
For three years she had believed one thing above everything else.
She had lost control.
She had picked up the bat.
She had destroyed her own life.
But now Daniel was telling her that her husband's affair had been part of something larger.
Something planned.
âWhy?â she whispered.
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he said the sentence that would change Evelyn's life for the second time.
âBecause Michael wasn't trying to leave you.â
Evelyn's blood went cold.
âHe was trying to take something from you.â
The wind moved through the sunflowers.
Evelyn looked at the little black flash drive in Daniel's hand.
Three years ago, she had walked into a bedroom and seen her marriage die.
Today, she was learning that the bedroom had been a trap.
And she had walked directly into it.
Daniel opened the SUV door.
âGet in.â
âWhere are we going?â
âTo the only place where I can show you the truth.â
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she took the flash drive.
Daniel watched her close her fist around it.
âThere is one thing you need to understand first.â
âWhat?â
âMichael didn't disappear after your conviction.â
Evelyn frowned.
âWhat do you mean?â
Daniel's face changed.
âHe was supposed to.â
She stared at him.
âSupposed to?â
Daniel looked away.
âHe vanished six months after your sentencing.â
Evelyn's heart stopped.
âWhere did he go?â
Daniel whispered:
âThat is what I've been trying to find out.â
Then Evelyn noticed something.
A small black envelope sat on the passenger seat.
Her name was written across it.

In handwriting she recognized immediately.
Michael's.
