Chapter 2 - Evelyn did not open the envelope. Not immediately.

She sat in Daniel's SUV with the black envelope resting on her lap while the engine idled.

Her fingers trembled.

Not because she was afraid of what was inside.

Because she already knew the handwriting.

Michael had written her name thousands of times.

On birthday cards.

Anniversary notes.

Grocery lists.

Sticky notes left beside the coffee machine.

For three years, she had tried to forget that handwriting.

Now it was sitting on her knees.

“Where did you get this?” she asked.

Daniel stared through the windshield.

“It was delivered to my office two days ago.”

“By whom?”

“I don't know.”

“You opened it.”

“No.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked at him.

Daniel's expression was exhausted.

“I've spent three years making bad choices,” he said. “I'm trying not to make another one.”

She broke the seal.

Inside was a photograph.

Evelyn froze.

It showed Michael standing outside a hotel.

Not alone.

Olivia was beside him.

The date was printed across the bottom.

December 9, 2021.

Eight days before Evelyn had found them in bed.

Her stomach tightened.

There was something strange about the photograph.

Michael wasn't smiling.

Olivia was.

In her hand was a thick folder.

Evelyn turned the photograph over.

Three words were written on the back.

YOU NEVER KNEW HER.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

She took out another sheet.

This one was a copy of an old bank statement.

Her name appeared at the top.

The account belonged to Evelyn's company.

Her consulting business had been her financial safety net for years.

She recognized the account number immediately.

Then she saw the transaction.

$275,000.

Transferred seven days before the affair.

Recipient:

Bennett Strategic Holdings.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“That's Olivia's company.”

Daniel nodded.

“You knew?”

“I found the transaction last month.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because there was more.”

He pulled another folder from the glove compartment.

Evelyn opened it.

Property documents.

Corporate registrations.

Shell companies.

Wire transfers.

Her eyes raced across the pages.

Then she saw a name.

Michael Mercer.

Her husband had apparently owned shares in a company she had never heard of.

A company connected to Olivia.

“What is this?”

“A holding company.”

“For what?”

Daniel stared at her.

“Your company.”

Evelyn's face went pale.

“No.”

“Evelyn, listen to me.”

“No.”

“The documents show that Michael had been moving money through Olivia for years.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if he was preparing to take control of your business.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“My company wasn't worth that much.”

Daniel looked at her.

“It was.”

She stopped.

“Because of what?”

“An acquisition.”

He handed her a newspaper article.

Evelyn read the headline.

Local consultancy targeted for $12 million acquisition.

Her hands went numb.

She remembered the deal.

She had started negotiating six months before her arrest.

It was confidential.

Only four people knew about it.

Evelyn.

Michael.

Her accountant.

And Olivia.

She slowly lowered the paper.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is what I was afraid of.”

“Michael knew about the acquisition.”

“Yes.”

“Olivia knew.”

“Yes.”

“But why would they need me to go to prison?”

Daniel's expression darkened.

“Because a convicted criminal is easier to control than a successful business owner.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“What did they want?”

“Your signature.”

The words landed like a hammer.

Daniel continued.

“After your conviction, Michael filed documents claiming you were psychologically unstable.”

Evelyn's mouth opened.

“I never signed anything.”

“Exactly.”

“What happened?”

“He tried to obtain legal control of your company.”

Evelyn looked down at the papers.

Something inside her began connecting.

The affair.

The fight.

The arrest.

The divorce.

Her company.

The acquisition.

They weren't separate events.

They were pieces of one plan.

Then she noticed a date.

The date on the legal petition.

December 18, 2021.

The morning after she found Michael and Olivia.

Evelyn's blood chilled.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“They had the documents ready before I was arrested.”

Daniel said nothing.

“They knew something was going to happen.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Daniel looked at her.

“That is the question.”

Evelyn stared through the windshield.

Then her phone buzzed.

A number appeared.

Unknown.

She answered.

“Hello?”

No voice came.

Only breathing.

Then a whisper.

“Stop digging.”

Evelyn froze.

“Who is this?”

The call ended.

A second message appeared.

A photograph.

Evelyn opened it.

It showed her childhood home.

The front door.

Taken that morning.

She looked at Daniel.

Someone was watching her.

May you like

And then another message appeared.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN PRISON.
