Chapter 12 - The cemetery was nearly empty when Evelyn arrived.Night had fallen.

Rain soaked the stone paths.

Grave 117 stood beneath an ancient oak tree.

Her father's name was carved into the marble.

Thomas Lane.

Evelyn stood before the grave.

She had visited it hundreds of times.

She had cried there.

Talked there.

Apologized there.

Never once had she suspected it was hiding something.

Daniel knelt beside the base.

“There.”

A small metal compartment was built beneath the stone.

Inside was a waterproof case.

Evelyn opened it.

Documents.

Photographs.

A USB drive.

And a handwritten letter.

The letter was addressed to her.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then I have failed to keep the people I love safe.

Evelyn began crying.

Her father continued.

There is a truth I never told you.

The money was never the reason they wanted you.

You are.

She stared at the words.

You are the only person who can identify the original network members.

You saw them when you were young.

Evelyn frowned.

Then remembered.

Dinner parties.

Business meetings.

People who had visited her childhood home.

People she had forgotten.

Her father knew she remembered faces.

The letter continued.

I taught you to trust your instincts. Do not forget them now.

A photograph slipped from the envelope.

Evelyn picked it up.

It showed a group of adults standing in front of her childhood home.

Her father.

Her mother.

Victor.

Olivia's father.

Michael's father.

And another person.

A woman.

Evelyn stared.

She recognized her.

Her own old school principal.

Mrs. Harper.

Daniel looked over her shoulder.

“Who is she?”

“I don't know.”

But she did.

At least, she thought she did.

Mrs. Harper had been the woman who first introduced Olivia to her.

The woman who had helped organize Evelyn's childhood summer program.

The woman who had been present at every family event.

Evelyn's skin crawled.

Then she noticed something else.

A child stood beside Mrs. Harper.

A young Olivia.

But another child stood beside her.

A boy.

Michael.

They had known each other long before Evelyn realized.

They had all known each other.

Daniel looked at the USB drive.

“We should leave.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because we're almost there.”

They returned to the safe house.

The USB contained hundreds of files.

Financial records.

Audio recordings.

Names.

Dates.

Payment schedules.

Then Evelyn opened the oldest file.

It was dated twenty-eight years earlier.

A video appeared.

Her father sat behind his desk.

Beside him was Mrs. Harper.

And Victor.

They were talking.

Evelyn leaned closer.

Her father's voice sounded angry.

“You promised the children would be protected.”

Victor replied:

“They are.”

Thomas shook his head.

“You used them.”

Mrs. Harper interrupted.

“Thomas, you knew the arrangement.”

Evelyn's heart pounded.

Then Thomas said:

“I never agreed to the marriages.”

Victor looked confused.

“What marriages?”

Thomas pointed at a document.

“The plan to connect our families.”

Evelyn froze.

Marriage.

Michael.

Olivia.

Her father had known.

The video continued.

Thomas spoke:

“You want Evelyn tied to Michael.”

Victor nodded.

“It gives us access to the trust.”

Thomas shook his head.

“And Olivia?”

Victor said:

“She handles the emotional side.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Everything had been arranged decades earlier.

Her friendship with Olivia.

Her marriage to Michael.

Even the people around her.

Maybe her entire life had been manipulated.

The video suddenly cut.

Another file opened automatically.

A medical record.

Then a photograph of a newborn baby.

The date matched Evelyn's pregnancy.

Under the photo was a name.

Baby Girl Lane.

Alive.

Healthy.

Taken from hospital.

But there was one more detail.

The signature approving the transfer.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

It belonged to the prison doctor.

The same doctor who had told her she had miscarried.

Daniel's face hardened.

“She was never treated for a miscarriage.”

“No.”

“She was kidnapped.”

Evelyn nodded.

Then another file appeared.

A custody record.

The destination was an orphanage.

The child had remained there for six months.

Then adopted.

Evelyn's hands trembled as she read the name of the adoptive mother.

Claire Morgan.

Evelyn looked up.

Her mother.

Claire had taken Sophie.

Her own mother had stolen her granddaughter.

Before Evelyn could process it, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Evelyn.”

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“The woman you're calling your mother is lying to you.”

The call ended.

Evelyn slowly looked toward Claire's bedroom.

May you like

And realized there was one secret left.

The one secret nobody had told her.
