Chapter 13 - Claire was gone. Her bed was empty.

The window was open.

Evelyn stood frozen.

Daniel searched the house.

Nothing.

Then Sophie came running downstairs.

“Where's Grandma?”

Evelyn turned.

“What did she tell you?”

Sophie looked confused.

“She said we're going somewhere safe.”

Evelyn felt her blood turn cold.

“When?”

“Last night.”

Daniel looked at her.

“She knew.”

“Knew what?”

“She knew someone was coming.”

Michael entered.

He looked at the open window.

“Claire took Sophie.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“You knew she would?”

“No.”

Then Daniel found something on the floor.

A key.

Attached to it was a tag.

117.

Evelyn understood.

The cemetery.

They rushed there.

But Claire was already waiting.

She stood in front of Thomas Lane's grave.

Sophie stood beside her.

A gun was in Claire's hand.

Evelyn stopped.

“Mom.”

Claire looked at her.

“I'm sorry.”

“Put the gun down.”

“I can't.”

“Please.”

“You don't understand.”

“You took my daughter.”

“I saved her.”

“You stole her.”

“I kept her alive!”

Claire's voice broke.

Then Evelyn saw the tears.

Real tears.

Not manipulation.

Pain.

Claire explained.

After Evelyn went to prison, Victor discovered Sophie had survived.

He ordered the child killed.

Claire intercepted the order.

She took Sophie.

Changed her records.

Raised her under a false identity.

Evelyn stared.

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Victor was watching you.”

“You could have told me.”

“You were in prison.”

“I would have found a way.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“You would have died.”

Evelyn's anger softened.

Then hardened again.

“You let me believe my baby was dead.”

“Yes.”

“You let me suffer.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if Victor knew Sophie was alive, he would use you to find her.”

Evelyn stared at Sophie.

“What is she to him?”

“The trust.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“More than that.”

“What?”

Claire lowered the gun.

“Your father didn't build the trust to protect money.”

Evelyn frowned.

“He built it to protect evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Claire pointed toward the grave.

“Everyone thinks the money is the secret.”

“It isn't.”

“The original ledger is.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“What ledger?”

Claire whispered:

“The ledger contains the names of everyone involved in the network.”

“Politicians.”

“Judges.”

“Bankers.”

“Police.”

“Business owners.”

“All of them.”

Evelyn understood.

The corruption went far beyond her family.

Victor wasn't protecting twenty million dollars.

He was protecting dozens of powerful people.

That was why investigators died.

That was why records disappeared.

That was why Evelyn had been sent to prison.

She hadn't been punished.

She had been silenced.

Then headlights appeared through the trees.

Claire looked up.

Her face changed.

“Oh God.”

Victor stepped from the darkness.

Four armed men surrounded him.

Victor smiled.

“You've made this unnecessarily difficult.”

Claire pushed Sophie behind her.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Where is the ledger?”

Victor laughed.

“You think you found it?”

He nodded toward Thomas's grave.

“The grave was a decoy.”

Evelyn froze.

“The real ledger is somewhere only you can access.”

“Where?”

Victor smiled.

“In your childhood memories.”

Evelyn didn't understand.

Victor looked at Sophie.

“She can open it.”

“Why?”

“Because your father encoded the password in a memory only you would remember.”

Evelyn's mind raced.

A memory.

Her childhood.

The summer when Olivia had stayed with her.

The summer her father had taken them into his office.

The red music box.

A phrase.

Something he had said.

When the little girl sings, the door opens.

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“The music box.”

Victor smiled.

“You remember.”

Then a gunshot rang out.

Victor's men turned.

Daniel had fired.

Chaos exploded.

Claire pushed Sophie toward Evelyn.

“Run!”

Evelyn grabbed the girl's hand.

They ran into the cemetery.

Behind them, bullets struck stone.

Then Evelyn heard Victor scream.

“GET THE GIRL!”

She tightened her grip on Sophie's hand.

May you like

And suddenly Sophie whispered:

“I know where the music box is.”
