Chapter 6: The Truth Claire Left Behind

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The rain continued pounding against the glass walls of the old greenhouse.

The sound was the only thing filling the silence.

Daniel stared at Victoria Black.

The woman who had just destroyed everything he believed.

Claire took Lily.

Claire hid Lily.

Claire thought he was dangerous.

Those words circled through his mind like a storm he couldn’t escape.

“No.”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

Victoria looked at him sadly.

“I know this is difficult.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.”

“I do.”

“No, you don’t.”

His eyes became red.

“You didn’t know Claire the way I did.”

Victoria lowered her gaze.

“You’re right.”

A pause.

“But I knew the side of Claire that you never saw.”

Daniel froze.

“What does that mean?”

Victoria looked at Lily.

The little girl was still holding onto Daniel’s jacket.

“She loved you.”

Those words confused him.

“Then why would she run?”

Victoria sighed.

“Because love doesn’t always remove fear.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“I never hurt her.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

“Then explain.”

Victoria looked toward the old photographs on the wall.

“Seven years ago, Claire discovered something.”

Daniel waited.

“She discovered that Lily was not safe.”

“Because of Victor?”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then who?”

Victoria looked directly at him.

“You.”

The word cut through the room.

Daniel stepped back.

“That’s impossible.”

“I know what it sounds like.”

“Because it’s a lie.”

Victoria remained calm.

“Claire didn’t believe you would hurt Lily intentionally.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Then what?”

“She believed you would destroy yourself trying to protect her.”

Daniel said nothing.

Victoria continued.

“When Lily was born, Claire discovered something about your family.”

“My family?”

“Yes.”

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Your family?”

Daniel shook his head.

“My family has nothing to do with this.”

Victoria walked toward the table.

She picked up another document.

“Your father had business connections with Victor Black.”

Daniel stared.

“My father?”

“Your father and Victor worked together years ago.”

Daniel took the paper.

The document showed old business agreements.

He recognized the company name.

His father’s company.

A company that collapsed after his father died.

“What does this mean?”

Victoria looked at him.

“It means Claire found out that someone from your family was involved in something dangerous.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“What kind of dangerous?”

Victoria hesitated.

Then answered:

“Illegal adoption networks.”

The words felt impossible.

Michael’s expression changed.

“Wait…”

Victoria nodded.

“Children were being moved through private organizations. Families with money paid to hide their mistakes.”

Daniel looked sick.

“And Lily?”

“She was never supposed to be part of it.”

“Then why?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Because someone discovered Claire’s child was valuable.”

Daniel felt his stomach turn.

“My daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victoria’s voice became quiet.

“Because Lily was the only person who could expose what happened.”

Daniel looked down at the documents.

His hands trembled.

“Claire knew?”

“She found evidence.”

“And she ran?”

Victoria nodded.

“She realized she couldn’t trust anyone.”

Daniel looked toward Lily.

Not trusting anyone.

Not even him.

A painful thought entered his mind.

Maybe Claire wasn’t trying to punish him.

Maybe she was terrified.

“Where is Claire now?”

The question came out immediately.

Victoria became silent.

Daniel noticed.

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

His anger returned.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Victoria looked at him.

“Because it’s true.”

“Then why does everyone know more than me?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Daniel looked at Lily.

The little girl was watching him carefully.

“Lily.”

She looked up.

“What did Mommy tell you about me?”

The question made her nervous.

“She said…”

She hugged her rabbit.

“She said Daddy was a good person.”

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“But?”

Lily looked down.

“She said good people can still be hurt by bad secrets.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Those words sounded exactly like Claire.

“Did Mommy hate me?”

The little girl immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Her answer came quickly.

“She loved you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why didn’t she come back?”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she tried.”

Everyone became still.

Daniel knelt.

“What?”

Lily whispered:

“Mommy came to see you.”

“When?”

“Many times.”

Daniel felt confused.

“Why didn’t I know?”

Lily looked at Victoria.

Victoria sighed.

“She was watching you.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“She watched me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victoria answered:

“To make sure you were safe.”

Daniel looked away.

Seven years.

Seven years believing Claire abandoned him.

But maybe…

Maybe she had been closer than he ever knew.

Suddenly, Michael’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?”

His face changed.

“What?”

Daniel immediately noticed.

“What happened?”

Michael covered the phone.

“The estate security found something.”

“What?”

“A hidden room beneath the wedding hall.”

Everyone froze.

Daniel frowned.

“Beneath the wedding hall?”

Michael nodded.

“They found old documents.”

“What documents?”

Michael looked at Victoria.

Then at Daniel.

“Documents connected to Claire.”

Daniel felt a chill.

The wedding.

The venue.

Everything.

Someone had chosen this place for a reason.

“Take me there.”

Ten minutes later, they returned to Ashbourne Estate.

The guests had been moved away.

Police had not been called yet.

Daniel didn’t trust anyone enough.

Not yet.

The hidden room was beneath the old ballroom.

A secret entrance had been discovered behind a decorative wall.

Inside was a small underground office.

And Daniel immediately recognized it.

Claire’s handwriting.

Her notes.

Her photographs.

Her evidence.

She had been investigating.

For years.

On the desk was a journal.

Daniel picked it up.

The first page had his name.

Daniel.

If you found this, it means I failed to protect you.

His hands began shaking.

He turned the page.

I need you to know something.

I never left because I stopped loving you.

I left because someone wanted Lily.

And they knew the only way to get to her…

was through you.

Daniel stopped breathing.

He continued reading.

There was a person inside our lives who knew everything.

Someone who smiled at us.

Someone who acted like family.

Someone who would do anything to keep the truth hidden.

Daniel looked up slowly.

Emily.

His mind immediately went there.

But then he noticed another name written at the bottom of the page.

A name he never expected.

Richard Carter.

Emily’s father.

Daniel felt cold.

Claire’s final note continued.

Daniel,

If you ever meet Lily, tell her I loved her.

Tell her I was never running away from her.

I was running toward a way to save her.

And if Emily is standing beside you…

Do not trust her.

The room became silent.

Daniel closed the journal.

Everything had changed again.

Emily wasn’t just hiding a secret.

She was connected to it.

But before Daniel could speak…

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Someone was approaching.

Michael turned.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

Then the door slowly opened.

Emily stood there.

Her wedding dress was torn.

Her face was covered in tears.

And in her hand…

She held a photograph.

A photograph of Claire.

Alive.

Taken yesterday.

Daniel stared.

“What is that?”

Emily looked at him.

“I was going to tell you everything.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is Claire?”

Emily’s lips trembled.

“She’s alive.”

Nobody moved.

May you like

Then Emily whispered the words that changed everything.

“But she doesn’t want you to find her.”
