Chapter 12: The Grandmother’s Confession

For the second time that night, Daniel Hayes watched someone return from the dead.
First, his father.
Now, his grandmother.
The woman standing in front of him was impossible.
Her silver hair.
Her familiar eyes.
The small scar above her eyebrow.
Daniel remembered that scar.
Not from recent memories.
From childhood.
From old family photographs.
From the stories his father used to tell him.
But those stories always ended the same way.
“She passed away peacefully.”
A funeral.
A grave.
A goodbye.
Except now…
She was standing in front of him.
Alive.
“I don’t understand.”
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
The woman looked at him.
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You can’t just appear and expect me to accept this.”
His grandmother looked down.
“You have every right to hate me.”
The words surprised him.
Because she wasn’t defending herself.
She wasn’t explaining.
She was accepting his anger.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You died.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then who was buried?”
A painful silence followed.
“My sister.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“She helped me disappear.”
Michael looked confused.
“Why would someone fake their own death?”
The woman looked toward Victor.
“Because I discovered what he was doing.”
Victor’s expression became colder.
“Enough.”
Everyone turned.
For the first time, Victor looked nervous.
Daniel noticed.
The man who had controlled everything.
The man who manipulated everyone.
Was afraid.
Of her.
The woman stepped forward.
“My name is Eleanor Hayes.”
Daniel stared.
“My grandmother.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why now?”
Eleanor looked at Lily.
“Because she is the last piece.”
Daniel immediately moved in front of his daughter.
“No one touches her.”
Eleanor’s expression softened.
“That is exactly why Claire chose you.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“She knew you would protect Lily before you knew the truth.”
Claire looked down.
Because that was true.
Daniel had spent years thinking Claire doubted him.
But maybe…
Maybe she always believed in him.
Eleanor looked around at the group.
“You all deserve to know everything.”
Victor laughed.
“You think telling stories changes anything?”
Eleanor ignored him.
“Twenty-five years ago, I discovered a network of powerful people.”
Daniel listened carefully.
“People who used money and influence to erase their crimes.”
She looked at Victor.
“He was one of them.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“I built an empire.”
“You built a prison.”
Eleanor continued.
“When I found evidence, I created a hidden archive.”
Daniel immediately understood.
“The room beneath the wedding hall.”
“Yes.”
“That was yours?”
“Yes.”
“Then why leave it there?”
“Because I knew one day someone in the Hayes family would find it.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Why Lily?”
Eleanor took a deep breath.
“Because Lily carries the final evidence.”
Daniel frowned.
“She’s a child.”
“Yes.”
“Then what evidence?”
Eleanor looked at Claire.
“Tell him.”
Claire remained silent.
Daniel looked at her.
“Claire?”
She slowly stepped forward.
“When Lily was born, the doctor discovered something unusual.”
Daniel waited.
“She had a rare genetic marker.”
Michael frowned.
“A genetic marker?”
Claire nodded.
“Something passed through your family.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What does that have to do with evidence?”
Eleanor answered.
“Your family has a tradition.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What tradition?”
“Keeping records.”
She explained:
“Years ago, when powerful people tried to hide children, the Hayes family secretly documented everything.”
Names.
Dates.
Proof.
“All of that information was stored in one place.”
Daniel looked at Victor.
“And he wants it.”
Victor smiled.
“Not just me.”
Everyone became silent.
Daniel noticed.
“What?”
Victor looked at Eleanor.
“You never told him the final truth.”
Eleanor’s expression changed.
Daniel looked between them.
“What truth?”
Victor stepped forward.
“Your grandmother wasn’t protecting the archive.”
A pause.
“She was protecting herself.”
Daniel felt the tension rise.
Eleanor’s face became serious.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Victor laughed.
“Why?”
He looked at Daniel.
“Because the truth hurts?”
Daniel stared.
“What is he talking about?”
Nobody answered.
Then Victor said:
“Your grandfather didn’t create the archive.”
Daniel waited.
“He stole it.”
The words shocked everyone.
Eleanor’s expression changed.
Victor continued.
“The original records belonged to another family.”
Daniel frowned.
“Which family?”
Victor looked at Lily.
“The family your daughter comes from.”
Silence.
Daniel felt confused.
“My daughter comes from my family.”
Victor smiled.
“That’s what you were told.”
Claire stepped back.
Her face became pale.
Daniel noticed.
“Claire?”
She looked at him.
“I didn’t know.”
The words hurt.
Because Claire was afraid.
Victor continued.
“Your grandfather found a child years ago.”
Daniel’s heart tightened.
“A child?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Victor looked at Lily.
“He raised that child as his own.”
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Who was that child?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
And answered:
“Me.”
The world stopped.
Daniel stared.
“You?”
Eleanor nodded.
“I was adopted.”
A long silence.
“My real family was destroyed because of Victor’s actions.”
Daniel looked overwhelmed.
“Then why hide it?”
“Because if the truth came out…”
She looked at Lily.
“…they would come for her.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Everything connected.
The secrets.
The disappearances.
The lies.
All of it led back generations.
Suddenly, Thomas moved.
Everyone turned.
Daniel rushed toward him.
“Dad.”
Thomas opened his eyes.
Weakly.
“You need to leave.”
Daniel looked relieved.
“You’re alive.”
Thomas gave a faint smile.
“Unfortunately, yes.”
Nobody laughed.
The situation was too serious.
Thomas looked at Eleanor.
“You came back.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I had no choice.”
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Listen to me.”
Daniel knelt.
“What?”
“The archive isn’t the only thing Victor wants.”
Daniel frowned.
“What else?”
Thomas looked at Lily.
“He wants the person who can unlock it.”
Daniel held Lily tighter.
“My daughter?”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
A terrible silence filled the area.
Then Victor smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You will never get her.”
Victor’s expression remained calm.
“You still don’t understand.”
He looked toward the vehicles behind him.
“You think this is about taking Lily.”
A pause.
“It’s about making you choose.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Choose what?”
Victor smiled.
“Your daughter…”
He looked at Claire.
“…or the woman who knows where the archive is.”
Everyone froze.
Because Claire suddenly understood.
Victor wasn’t after Lily.
Not directly.
He wanted to force Daniel to betray someone.
To destroy the family he was trying to rebuild.
And then Victor said the words that changed everything:
“The archive will be opened at midnight.”
A pause.
“And when it opens…”
May you like
He smiled.
“Everyone will learn what Daniel Hayes truly is.”
