Chapter 3: The Secret Guest at the Wedding
Daniel had spent years believing that the past was something he had already buried.
The accident.
Claire’s disappearance.
The child he thought he would never have.
The pain.
He had placed every memory into a locked room inside his heart and convinced himself he had moved forward.
But now that door had been ripped open.
And standing in front of him was the proof that everything he believed was wrong.
Lily.
His daughter.
A little girl who had known his name before he even knew hers.
Daniel held her small hand as they walked out of the bathroom.
The wedding hall was still glowing.
The flowers were still perfect.
The guests were still smiling.
Nobody knew that behind the beautiful decorations was a storm about to destroy everything.
Michael approached quickly.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at him.
“We need to leave this room.”
Michael noticed Lily.
His expression softened.
“Is this…”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Michael looked shocked.
“Daniel…”
“I know.”
There were no words big enough for what had happened.
Michael looked at Lily carefully.
“Hi. I’m Michael.”
The little girl hid slightly behind Daniel.
Daniel noticed.
She wasn’t just scared of Emily.
She was scared of everyone.
A child who had spent her life being told to stay hidden had learned that attention was dangerous.
“It’s okay,” Daniel whispered.
“She’s my friend.”
Lily slowly nodded.
“Hello.”
Michael forced a gentle smile.
“Hello, Lily.”
Then he looked back at Daniel.
“Who else knows?”
Daniel glanced toward Emily.
“She does.”
Michael followed his eyes.
Emily was standing near the entrance of the hall.
Watching.
Waiting.
Her expression was unreadable.
“Daniel, what are you going to do?”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
The answer came instantly.
“Protect her.”
Emily watched from across the room.
She saw Daniel holding Lily’s hand.
She saw the way he looked at the child.
And she knew.
Everything was falling apart.
But Emily wasn’t only afraid of losing Daniel.
She was afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.
Because Lily was not the only secret hidden for seven years.
There were things Daniel didn’t know.
Things Claire had never told him.
Things Emily had spent years trying to control.
She walked toward them.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
“What?”
Her voice was quieter now.
“Can we talk privately?”
“No.”
Several guests nearby turned their heads.
Emily lowered her voice.
“Please.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then back at Emily.
“You already had seven years to talk.”
That sentence hurt her.
But she deserved it.
“I made mistakes.”
“Mistakes?”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You didn’t forget to tell me about my daughter, Emily.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
She looked at Lily.
“Of what would happen if you knew.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You should have trusted me.”
Emily looked away.
“I did.”
“No, you didn’t.”
The silence between them became heavy.
Then Emily whispered:
“Claire wasn’t supposed to come back.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Michael looked between them.
“What did you just say?”
Emily realized she had said too much.
But it was too late.
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Claire came back?”
Emily said nothing.
“Emily.”
Her shoulders dropped.
“Yes.”
The word felt like a weapon.
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
Daniel stared at her.
Six years.
Claire had been alive.
Six years.
“She was alive?”
Emily nodded slowly.
Daniel stepped backward.
The world felt unreal.
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
Daniel looked at her with disbelief.
“You expect me to believe Claire disappeared twice?”
Emily’s face tightened.
“You don’t understand what happened.”
“Then explain.”
Before Emily could answer, a voice interrupted.
“Daniel.”
Everyone turned.
An older man was standing near the entrance.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
Richard Carter.
Emily’s father.
The man who had helped raise Emily after her mother died.
The man who had always supported their relationship.
Richard walked closer.
His expression was serious.
“Your wedding day is not the place for this conversation.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You knew?”
Richard stopped.
That was enough.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew about Lily.”
Richard remained silent.
“You knew my daughter existed.”
“Daniel…”
“No.”
His voice echoed through the hall.
“You knew.”
Guests began whispering.
The beautiful wedding atmosphere shattered.
Richard sighed.
“Let’s not do this in front of everyone.”
Daniel looked around.
“Why not?”
He pointed toward the guests.
“Everyone came here to watch me marry a woman who lied to me.”
Emily looked down.
Richard’s face hardened.
“Be careful with your words.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Careful?”
His anger finally broke through.
“My daughter was hidden from me.”
The hall went completely silent.
Several guests gasped.
“Daughter?”
“Did he say daughter?”
Whispers spread like fire through dry grass.
Emily closed her eyes.
The secret was no longer a secret.
Richard looked furious.
“Daniel, you don’t understand the situation.”
“No.”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“I understand perfectly.”
He held Lily closer.
“A little girl was forced to hide in a bathroom on the day of my wedding because the adults around her were afraid of the truth.”
Lily grabbed his jacket.
“Daddy…”
Daniel immediately softened.
“I’m here.”
Richard noticed the way Daniel protected her.
For a moment, something changed in his expression.
Regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
“There are things you don’t know.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Then tell me.”
Richard looked at Emily.
She shook her head slightly.
Almost like she was warning him.
But Richard continued.
“Seven years ago, Claire discovered something.”
Daniel waited.
“What?”
Richard took a deep breath.
“She discovered that someone close to her was trying to take Lily away.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Who?”
Richard didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked around the room.
At the guests.
At the staff.
At everyone.
Then he said:
“The person responsible is here today.”
A cold silence filled the hall.
Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.
“Who?”
Richard looked toward the back of the room.
And Daniel followed his eyes.
Standing near the entrance was a woman.
A woman he had never seen before.
She was wearing a simple black dress.
Her face was pale.
And the moment her eyes met Lily’s…
She looked terrified.
Lily suddenly grabbed Daniel’s hand.
Her tiny fingers tightened.
“Daddy…”
“What is it?”
The little girl whispered:
“That’s the woman Mommy told me about.”
Daniel looked at the stranger.
“Who is she?”
Lily hid behind him.
“She was there the night Mommy disappeared.”
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
The woman noticed Lily had recognized her.
Then she turned.
And started walking away.
“Stop!”
Daniel shouted.
The woman froze.
Every guest looked toward them.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re not leaving.”
The woman slowly turned around.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel stared.
“For what?”
She looked at Lily.
Then at him.
“For not telling you the truth sooner.”
Daniel’s heart pounded.
“Who are you?”
The woman’s lips trembled.
Then she answered:
“My name is Sarah.”
A pause.
“And I was Claire’s best friend.”
Daniel waited.
But the next words destroyed everything he thought he knew.
“I saw what happened the night Claire disappeared.”
The entire hall went silent.
Daniel moved closer.
“What happened?”
Sarah looked at Emily.
Then at Richard.
Then back at Daniel.
And whispered:
“Claire wasn’t taken.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“She ran.”
“Why?”
The woman looked at Lily.
“Because she found out someone she trusted was planning to destroy her family.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“Who?”
Sarah opened her mouth.
But before she could answer…
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire wedding hall fell into darkness.
Guests screamed.
Someone knocked over a table.
And in the confusion…
A figure rushed toward Lily.
Daniel heard her scream.
“Daddy!”
He reached forward.
But the darkness swallowed everything.
When the lights returned seconds later…
Lily was gone.
