Chapter 10: The Man Behind Every Secret

The cabin felt smaller than before.
The walls seemed to close in.
The air felt heavier.
Daniel stood in the middle of the room, staring at the people around him.
Everyone he had trusted.
Everyone he had loved.
Everyone had hidden something.
His father had lied.
Emily had lied.
Claire had disappeared.
And somewhere outside, a man who was supposed to be dead was controlling everything.
Victor Black.
The name that had haunted their lives for years.
Daniel looked at his father.
“Tell me the truth.”
His father remained silent.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Not another excuse.”
His father slowly looked up.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“I spent seven years believing everyone I loved was gone.”
A pause.
“And now I find out everyone was alive and everyone knew more than me.”
His father lowered his head.
“You deserve the truth.”
Daniel waited.
The older man took a deep breath.
“My name is Thomas Hayes.”
Daniel looked confused.
“You’re telling me your own name?”
Thomas nodded.
“Because the man you knew as your father died years ago.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas looked at Claire.
“She knows.”
Claire’s expression became painful.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.”
Claire hesitated.
Then she spoke.
“Your father wasn’t just a businessman.”
Daniel stared.
“He was an investigator.”
The words surprised him.
“What?”
Thomas nodded.
“For years, I worked undercover.”
Michael looked shocked.
“Undercover?”
“Yes.”
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“I was investigating Victor Black.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Thomas continued.
“Victor wasn’t just involved in illegal adoption networks.”
He paused.
“He was building a system.”
“A system?”
“A system where powerful people could erase problems.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“People?”
Thomas nodded.
“People who knew too much.”
The room went silent.
Years ago, Thomas Hayes had discovered something impossible.
Victor Black had created a network that reached into companies, government offices, and private organizations.
Anyone who threatened him disappeared.
Evidence vanished.
Witnesses changed their stories.
Lives were destroyed.
Thomas spent years collecting proof.
But Victor discovered him.
And that was when everything changed.
Victor didn’t kill Thomas.
That would have been too simple.
Instead, he created a new identity.
A fake death.
A disappearance.
Thomas became a ghost.
Someone who could continue investigating without anyone knowing.
But there was one person he couldn’t protect.
Daniel.
“I thought if everyone believed I was dead, you would be safe.”
Daniel stared.
“Safe?”
His voice cracked.
“You left me alone.”
Thomas looked broken.
“I know.”
“You watched me suffer.”
“I know.”
“You watched me bury you.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I know.”
Daniel turned away.
Because hearing his father admit it somehow hurt more.
Outside the cabin, engines approached.
Multiple vehicles.
They were running out of time.
Michael looked through the window.
“We need to move.”
Thomas nodded.
“There’s a tunnel behind the cabin.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You planned an escape route.”
“Yes.”
“Of course you did.”
The bitterness in Daniel’s voice was obvious.
Thomas accepted it.
“I understand why you hate me.”
Daniel looked back.
“I don’t hate you.”
That surprised everyone.
Daniel continued:
“I just don’t know who you are anymore.”
Thomas looked away.
That sentence hurt more than anger.
Because it was true.
They moved through the hidden tunnel beneath the cabin.
It was old and narrow.
Only one person could walk at a time.
Claire carried Lily.
Daniel stayed beside them.
For the first time in years, they were walking together again.
Not as a couple.
Not yet.
But as parents.
Lily looked between them.
“Are you and Mommy going to stay together?”
The question caught both adults off guard.
Claire looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Claire.
Neither had an answer.
Because too much had happened.
Too many wounds.
Too many years lost.
Daniel gently touched Lily’s hair.
“Right now, we just need to keep you safe.”
Lily nodded.
“But I want a family.”
The words were innocent.
But they hurt.
Because every person in that tunnel wanted the same thing.
A normal life.
A life without secrets.
After nearly twenty minutes, they reached the end of the tunnel.
It opened near an abandoned road.
Everyone stepped outside.
For a moment, they thought they had escaped.
Then they saw the cars.
Three black vehicles.
Waiting.
Thomas stopped.
“They knew.”
Michael looked around.
“How?”
Thomas’s face changed.
“There is a tracker.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Thomas looked at Lily.
Then Daniel.
“Someone has been tracking us.”
Daniel immediately checked his jacket.
Nothing.
Claire checked her bag.
Nothing.
Emily looked down.
Her face changed.
“No…”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
Emily slowly reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small object.
A tiny tracking device.
Daniel stared.
“Where did you get that?”
Emily’s hands shook.
“I don’t know.”
Thomas took it.
“This was planted recently.”
Daniel looked around.
The enemy wasn’t just watching.
They were always close.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Very impressive.”
Everyone turned.
A man stepped out from between the trees.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
The kind of person who didn’t need to raise his voice to be dangerous.
Victor Black.
Alive.
Daniel stared.
“You.”
Victor smiled.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment.”
Claire stepped forward.
“You destroyed everything.”
Victor looked at her.
“No.”
He smiled.
“You did.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Where is the proof?”
Victor looked amused.
“Proof?”
“Yes.”
“The documents. The evidence. The things Claire found.”
Victor laughed softly.
“You still think this is about evidence.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then what is it about?”
Victor looked at Lily.
“It’s about inheritance.”
Everyone became silent.
Daniel felt uneasy.
“What does that mean?”
Victor walked closer.
“Your daughter isn’t valuable because she can expose me.”
He looked at Lily.
“She’s valuable because of who she is.”
Claire tightened her arms around her.
“She’s just a child.”
Victor smiled.
“That’s exactly why nobody saw it coming.”
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“Explain.”
Victor looked at him.
“Seven years ago, your father discovered something.”
Thomas’s face changed.
Victor continued.
“Something about your family.”
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“What?”
Thomas remained silent.
Victor smiled.
“The Hayes family owns something far more valuable than money.”
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor took out a small envelope.
Inside was an old photograph.
Daniel looked at it.
His face slowly changed.
Because the photograph showed…
His grandfather.
Victor.
And a woman Daniel had never seen before.
Holding a baby.
A baby with a familiar face.
Lily.
Daniel looked at Victor.
“That’s impossible.”
Victor smiled.
“Your family has been hiding the truth for generations.”
A pause.
“And Lily is the final piece.”
Daniel felt a cold wave pass through him.
“What is she?”
Victor looked at the little girl.
Then answered:
“She is the reason your entire family was destroyed.”
The wind moved through the trees.
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily whispered:
“Daddy…”
Daniel looked down.
She was trembling.
“Who is that man?”
Daniel pulled her closer.
“I don’t know.”
But deep inside…
He knew one thing.
This was no longer about a wedding.
No longer about a missing mother.
No longer about old secrets.

This was about a battle that had started long before Daniel was born.
And his daughter was standing at the center of it.
