Chapter 11: The Secret of the Hayes Family

The photograph in Victor Black’s hand felt heavier than a piece of paper.

Daniel stared at it.

A picture.

A simple picture.

Yet somehow it carried the weight of generations of lies.

His grandfather.

Victor Black.

A woman he didn’t recognize.

And a baby.

A baby who looked strangely familiar.

Too familiar.

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then back at the photograph.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“This is impossible.”

Victor smiled.

“That’s what everyone says when they discover the truth.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You expect me to believe my family has been hiding something for generations?”

Victor tilted his head.

“I don’t expect you to believe anything.”

He looked around at everyone.

“After all, the people closest to you have already proven they are very good at hiding the truth.”

The words landed painfully.

Daniel glanced at Claire.

At Emily.

At Thomas.

Everyone looked away.

Victor noticed.

He enjoyed it.

Because he understood something important.

The easiest way to destroy someone was not with violence.

It was with doubt.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Victor laughed.

“Still pretending you’re the hero?”

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“I know what you are.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

He pointed toward Daniel.

“He needs to know what you are.”

Daniel looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas remained silent.

And once again…

Silence became another betrayal.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“Dad.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Tell me.”

A long pause.

Then Thomas finally spoke.

“Your grandfather was involved with Victor.”

Daniel frowned.

“I know that.”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

He looked at the photograph.

“Your grandfather wasn’t working with him.”

A pause.

“He was working against him.”

Victor’s smile disappeared slightly.

Thomas continued.

“Years ago, Victor discovered a secret about the Hayes family.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What secret?”

Thomas looked at Lily.

“The Hayes family had protected children from powerful people for generations.”

Michael frowned.

“Protected?”

Thomas nodded.

“Families with influence often tried to erase their mistakes.”

Daniel felt sick.

“And my family stopped them?”

“Yes.”

Thomas looked at Victor.

“Until he found a way to turn the system against us.”

Victor laughed.

“You make it sound noble.”

Thomas stared.

“Because it was.”

Victor stepped closer.

“No, Thomas.”

His voice became colder.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Your grandfather wasn’t a hero.”

Daniel said nothing.

Victor continued.

“He was a man who believed he could control everything.”

A pause.

“And that arrogance destroyed your family.”

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“Is that true?”

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“You don’t even deny it.”

Thomas sighed.

“Your grandfather made mistakes.”

“What kind?”

“He believed he could fight people like Victor alone.”

Daniel looked at Victor.

“And?”

“He lost.”

The words were quiet.

But painful.

Thomas continued.

“He created a hidden archive.”

“An archive?”

“Evidence.”

Daniel remembered the hidden room beneath the wedding hall.

The documents.

The photographs.

“That room…”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

“It belonged to my grandfather?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Victor.

“And Lily?”

Victor smiled.

“Now you’re asking the right question.”

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her face was filled with fear.

“Daniel, don’t listen.”

Victor looked at her.

“You know the truth.”

Claire’s eyes became angry.

“Leave her alone.”

Victor ignored her.

“Seven years ago, Claire discovered that Lily carried something.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“A key.”

Silence.

Daniel frowned.

“A key to what?”

Victor looked at the photograph.

“To everything your family spent decades hiding.”

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Mommy said never to let anyone take it.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel knelt beside her.

“Take what?”

The little girl looked scared.

“I don’t know.”

Claire immediately hugged her.

“Lily.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You knew?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

She looked at Lily.

Then at Daniel.

“When Lily was born, my doctor gave me something.”

“What?”

“A small box.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

Claire’s voice shook.

“Because your grandfather left instructions before he died.”

Thomas looked surprised.

“He did?”

Claire nodded.

“He knew something was coming.”

Victor smiled.

“Exactly.”

Daniel felt a growing anger.

Everyone knew.

Everyone had pieces.

Except him.

“What was inside the box?”

Claire hesitated.

“A memory card.”

Michael looked surprised.

“A memory card?”

Claire nodded.

“It contained names.”

“Names of who?”

Claire looked at Victor.

“Everyone involved.”

The forest became silent.

Victor’s expression finally changed.

For the first time…

He looked worried.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

And understood.

The memory card mattered.

A lot.

Suddenly, Victor’s phone rang.

He answered.

“What?”

A pause.

His face changed.

“Impossible.”

Everyone noticed.

Victor turned away.

Someone on the other end was speaking quickly.

Then Victor looked back at Daniel.

The confidence was gone.

“You found it.”

Daniel frowned.

“Found what?”

Victor ended the call.

Then he smiled.

But it was no longer a calm smile.

It was forced.

“You have no idea what you’ve started.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is my daughter’s key?”

Victor looked at him.

“You think you can stop this?”

Daniel answered:

“Yes.”

Victor laughed.

“You’re exactly like your grandfather.”

A pause.

“Too late.”

Before anyone could react…

A gunshot echoed through the forest.

Everyone froze.

Thomas fell.

“Dad!”

Daniel rushed forward.

Thomas collapsed to the ground.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Claire screamed.

Michael immediately searched for the shooter.

But there was no one visible.

Victor stepped backward.

“This was never about me.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“The person who wants Lily isn’t standing in front of you.”

He looked toward the road.

“They’re already here.”

Several black vehicles appeared through the trees.

More people.

More weapons.

More enemies.

Daniel stood between them and Lily.

His entire body was ready to fight.

But then one vehicle stopped.

The back door opened.

A person stepped out.

Someone Daniel never expected.

Someone who made Claire lose all color from her face.

Someone who made Emily whisper:

“No…”

Daniel looked at the stranger.

“Who is that?”

Claire’s voice trembled.

“Daniel…”

She could barely speak.

“That’s the person who started everything.”

The person walked closer.

And Daniel recognized the face.

Because he had seen it before.

In his own childhood photographs.

The stranger smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.”

A pause.

“I’m your grandmother.”

May you like

Daniel froze.

Because his grandmother had been dead for twenty years.
