Chapter 14: The Betrayal Hidden for Decades

The screen remained frozen.
The words burned into everyone’s eyes.
THE HAYES FAMILY BETRAYAL.
Nobody spoke.
The archive room was silent except for the sound of the old computer processing files that had been hidden for decades.
Daniel stared at the screen.
His heart was beating faster.
Not because he was afraid of Victor anymore.
But because he finally understood.
The truth he had spent his entire life searching for…
Was about to be revealed.
And it involved his own family.
“Open it.”
His voice was quiet.
Eleanor looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“Open it.”
The room seemed to hold its breath.
The computer unlocked.
A list of files appeared.
Hundreds of names.
Dates.
Photographs.
Documents.
Evidence.
Then one folder appeared at the top.
FILE 001: THE ORIGINAL BETRAYAL.
Daniel clicked it.
The screen showed a photograph.
A younger Eleanor.
A younger Victor.
And Daniel’s grandfather.
Three people standing together.
But the date shocked him.
Forty years earlier.
Michael leaned closer.
“They knew each other for that long?”
Thomas looked away.
“Yes.”
Daniel turned.
“You knew?”
Thomas nodded slowly.
“I knew they had history.”
“But not this?”
“No.”
Daniel looked back at the screen.
A video file appeared.
Recorded decades ago.
He clicked.
The screen flickered.
Then a younger version of his grandfather appeared.
His voice was older, but clear.
“If anyone finds this recording, it means the truth has survived.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
His grandfather continued:
“I made a terrible mistake.”
A pause.
“I trusted the wrong person.”
The video showed Victor.
Standing beside him.
Then Eleanor.
Daniel looked at his grandmother.
She closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“Victor Black was not always my enemy.”
Everyone became still.
“He was my partner.”
Daniel felt a chill.
His grandfather continued:
“We believed we could change the world by controlling the system.”
The words echoed.
Controlling.
The same words Victor used.
“We were wrong.”
The video paused.
Then another message appeared.
CONTINUE?
Daniel clicked.
The recording resumed.
“Eleanor discovered the truth before I did.”
Daniel looked at his grandmother.
“She learned that Victor was no longer trying to protect children.”
The screen showed documents.
Money transfers.
Secret agreements.
“He was building an empire.”
A pause.
“And when Eleanor tried to stop him…”
The video became distorted.
Then one sentence appeared:
SHE BETRAYED US.
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Is that true?”
Eleanor didn’t answer.
And once again, silence hurt more than words.
Victor’s voice suddenly came through the speakers.
“You see, Daniel?”
Everyone turned toward the computer.
“You spent all night thinking I was the monster.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Where are you?”
Victor ignored the question.
“But monsters are rarely born.”
A pause.
“They are created.”
Eleanor stepped toward the computer.
“Victor.”
His voice became amused.
“Hello, Eleanor.”
“You’re still hiding.”
Victor laughed.
“And you’re still pretending.”
Daniel looked between them.
“What happened?”
Nobody answered.
Victor continued.
“Your grandmother made the first move.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?”
Eleanor looked down.
Victor’s voice filled the room.
“She came to me.”
Silence.
“She wanted power.”
“No.”
Eleanor whispered.
Victor continued.
“She wanted control over the archive.”
Daniel looked at his grandmother.
“Is that true?”
Eleanor finally spoke.
“Yes.”
Everyone froze.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
“Why?”
Eleanor looked at him.
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was afraid.”
The answer sounded familiar.
Everyone had been afraid.
But fear had destroyed them.
She continued:
“When I discovered what Victor was doing, I wanted to stop him.”
Daniel waited.
“But I also wanted protection.”
“For yourself?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt.
“I made a deal with him.”
Thomas looked shocked.
“You?”
Eleanor looked away.
“I thought I could control him.”
Victor laughed.
“You thought you were smarter than everyone.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Daniel looked at the screen.
“So what happened?”
Victor answered.
“She betrayed me.”
Eleanor looked angry.
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“She tried to steal the archive.”
A pause.
“And when she failed…”
He looked at Daniel.
“She destroyed her own family.”
Daniel felt cold.
“What does that mean?”
The computer opened another file.
INCIDENT: HAYES FAMILY COLLAPSE.
Inside were records.
The accident that killed Daniel’s grandfather.
The business collapse.
The disappearance of evidence.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“This…”
Thomas looked at the files.
His face changed.
“Impossible.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Thomas whispered:
“The accident.”
“What about it?”
“It wasn’t an accident.”
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
Then Victor.
“Who did it?”
Nobody spoke.
Then the screen displayed a name.
ELEANOR HAYES.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.”
Eleanor’s face turned pale.
“I didn’t…”
She stopped.
Because even she wasn’t certain anymore.
Victor’s voice became softer.
“Your grandmother never wanted your grandfather dead.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why?”
Victor answered:
“Because she wanted the archive.”
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Did you kill him?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
A pause.
“But my actions caused it.”
The confession destroyed the room.
Thomas looked away.
“You knew?”
Eleanor nodded.
“I found out afterward.”
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Her voice broke.
“Because I was afraid.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Again.
That word.
Fear.
The thing that had controlled every person in his life.
Suddenly, Lily spoke.
“Daddy.”
Daniel looked down.
“Yes?”
She pointed at the screen.
“Why is my picture there?”
Everyone turned.
On the computer screen was a new file.
Not old.
Not decades ago.
Created recently.
FINAL SUBJECT: LILY HAYES.
Daniel immediately moved in front of her.
“No.”
Victor’s voice returned.
“Now you understand.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“The archive was never about the past.”
A pause.
“It was always about the future.”
Claire held Lily tighter.
Victor continued:
“Lily is the only person who can reveal everything.”
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“She’s a child.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re afraid of her.”
Victor smiled.
“Exactly.”
The room went silent.
Then Victor said:
“Because children remember what adults try to forget.”
The screen changed.
A final file appeared.
THE LAST WITNESS.
Daniel looked confused.
“Witness?”
Victor answered:
“Someone who saw everything.”
The file opened.
A video appeared.
A little girl was sitting in a chair.
Around five years old.
Daniel froze.
Because he recognized the dress.
The room.
The background.
It was a video from seven years ago.
And the child on the screen…
Was Lily.
Everyone looked at the little girl standing beside Daniel.
She covered her mouth.
“I remember that.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What do you remember?”
Lily stared at the screen.
Then whispered:
“Mommy was crying.”
A pause.
“And someone told her…”
Her voice trembled.
“Daddy could never know the truth.”
Daniel felt cold.
Because he finally understood.
The final witness wasn’t Lily’s existence.
It was Lily’s memory.
May you like
And whatever she saw that night…
Was the secret everyone had killed to hide.
