Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Old Greenhouse

The rain began falling as Daniel stepped outside the Ashbourne Estate.
The wedding that was supposed to mark the beginning of his future had become a journey into the darkest parts of his past.
Behind him, the lights of the mansion still shone brightly.
But the garden ahead was swallowed by darkness.
Somewhere beyond the rows of old trees stood the abandoned greenhouse.
The place where someone had taken his daughter.
Daniel walked faster.
Every second felt unbearable.
His mind kept replaying the same image.
Lily sitting on the bathroom floor.
Her frightened eyes.
Her tiny hands holding the stuffed rabbit.
The way she whispered:
“Daddy.”
Seven years.
He had lost seven years with her.
Seven birthdays.
Seven Christmas mornings.
Seven moments when he should have been there.
And now, after finally finding her…
Someone had stolen her away again.
Michael followed beside him, carrying a flashlight.
“You need to stay calm.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Calm?”
Michael understood.
“No. You’re right.”
He lowered his voice.
“But whoever took Lily wants you emotional.”
Daniel stopped walking.
“What do you mean?”
“They called you. They brought you here. They want a reaction.”
Daniel looked toward the greenhouse in the distance.
“You think it’s a trap?”
Michael nodded.
“I think everything tonight has been a trap.”
The rain became heavier.
Neither man spoke again.
Because they both knew the truth.
The wedding had never been the target.
The wedding was the stage.
The old greenhouse stood behind the estate, hidden by overgrown trees.
It had once belonged to Daniel’s grandfather.
A beautiful glass building filled with rare flowers.
But after years of neglect, it became a forgotten place.
The broken windows reflected the lightning.
The rusty door moved slightly with the wind.
Daniel approached.
“Lily?”
No answer.
He pushed the door open.
Creak.
The sound echoed through the empty greenhouse.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Dead plants surrounded the walkway.
Old gardening tools sat abandoned in corners.
Michael shined his flashlight around.
“Nothing.”
Daniel walked deeper.
Then he saw something.
A small white shoe.
Lying on the floor.
His heart stopped.
“Lily.”
He rushed forward.
But it wasn’t her.
It was only one of her shoes.
A message.
Someone wanted him to find it.
Daniel picked it up.
His hands shook.
“She was here.”
Michael looked around.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
Michael pointed toward the ground.
Footprints.
Small footprints.
And another set.
An adult.
Two people had been here.
Daniel followed the trail.
It led toward the back room of the greenhouse.
The door was locked.
Michael examined it.
“This looks old.”
Daniel grabbed the handle.
“It doesn’t matter.”
He pulled.
The door opened.
Inside was a small hidden room.
And Daniel froze.
The walls were covered with photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Pictures of Claire.
Pictures of Lily.
Pictures of him.
His breathing became uneven.
“What is this?”
Michael stepped inside.
“This isn’t a kidnapping room.”
Daniel looked around.
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“It’s a surveillance room.”
Someone had been watching them.
For years.
There were pictures of Claire during her pregnancy.
Pictures of Lily as a baby.
Pictures of Daniel walking alone after Claire disappeared.
Pictures of Emily.
Everywhere.
Every moment.
Someone had been following their lives.
On the table in the center of the room was a folder.
Daniel opened it.
Inside were documents.
Medical records.
Legal papers.
And one photograph.
A photograph of Claire holding newborn Lily.
On the back was written:
“Day 1. She is safe. Daniel cannot know yet.”
Daniel stared at the words.
His hands tightened around the picture.
“Why would Claire write this?”
Michael picked up another paper.
“Daniel…”
Something in his voice changed.
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Michael handed him the document.
Daniel read it.
And his face went pale.
It was a custody agreement.
Between Claire and someone named Victor Black.
Daniel frowned.
“Who is Victor Black?”
Michael looked at the other documents.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel searched through the folder.
Then he found another page.
A newspaper article.
The headline made him freeze.
“Business Heir Victor Black Dies in Mysterious Car Accident.”
Daniel looked at the date.
Seven years ago.
The same year Claire disappeared.
“Victor…”
The name felt familiar.
Then suddenly, a memory returned.
A man at a charity event.
A wealthy businessman.
Someone who had once argued with Claire.
Someone who had told Daniel:
“You don’t know what kind of world you’re entering.”
Daniel remembered.
Victor Black.
Claire’s former employer.
A powerful man with connections everywhere.
“What does he have to do with Lily?”
Before Michael could answer…
A small sound came from behind them.
A cough.
Daniel turned instantly.
“Lily?”
At the corner of the room…
A little figure was standing there.
His daughter.
Her dress was dirty.
Her face was wet with tears.
But she was alive.
Daniel ran.
He dropped to his knees and hugged her.
Lily immediately wrapped her arms around him.
“I knew you would come.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The relief almost broke him.
“I promised you.”
“I know.”
She buried her face against his shoulder.
“You came back.”
Daniel held her tightly.
“I will always come back.”
Michael looked away for a moment.
Even he couldn’t hide the emotion on his face.
But then Daniel noticed something.
Lily was shaking.
Not from fear.
From cold.
He removed his jacket and wrapped it around her.
“Who brought you here?”
The little girl became silent.
Daniel noticed.
“Lily?”
She looked toward the door.
“She said I had to wait.”
“Who?”
The girl whispered:
“The woman who knows Mommy’s secret.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“Emily?”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then who?”
The door behind them slowly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
She was older.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were full of sadness.
Daniel immediately stepped in front of Lily.
“Who are you?”
The woman looked at Lily.
Then at Daniel.
“I’m the person who has been trying to protect her.”
Michael raised his flashlight.
“Identify yourself.”
The woman took a deep breath.
“My name is Victoria Black.”
Daniel froze.
The name hit him instantly.
Victor Black.
The man from the documents.
The dead businessman.
“Are you related to Victor Black?”
The woman nodded.
“He was my brother.”
Daniel tightened his grip on Lily.
“What do you want?”
Victoria looked at the child.
“Nothing.”
“Then why take her?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I knew someone else was coming for her.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?”
Victoria looked toward the photographs covering the walls.
Then she said something that changed everything.
“The person you should be afraid of…”
She paused.
“…is not the person who took Lily.”
Daniel stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Victoria whispered:
“The person who took Lily from you seven years ago…”
A long silence.
“…was Claire.”
Daniel felt like the floor disappeared beneath him.
“No.”
Victoria looked at him with sadness.
“I’m sorry.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Daniel…”
“She loved her.”
Victoria nodded.
“I know.”
“Then why?”
The woman looked at Lily.
“Because Claire was trying to save her from someone.”
Daniel’s voice became desperate.
“Who?”
Victoria’s answer was barely audible.
“From you.”
Silence filled the greenhouse.
Daniel stared.
“What?”
Victoria stepped forward.
“She believed you were the danger.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
His daughter looked confused.
Scared.
The world he had built around himself began collapsing again.
Because now there was a new question.
Not who stole his daughter.
May you like
Not who hid the truth.
But why would Claire believe the man who loved her was the person Lily needed protection from?
