CHAPTER 9 The Woman Who Pushed

Vanessa didn't move.

She stood frozen behind the office door, one hand instinctively resting against her stomach.

Richard remained at the window, his back to her, staring across the Philadelphia skyline.

He had no idea she had heard everything.

"They still don't know who gave the order to push Khloe."

Those words echoed inside her mind.

Not why.

Not how.

Who.

Which meant one terrifying thing.

Richard hadn't considered the shove an emotional outburst.

It had been an operation.

And she...

Had been the weapon.

She quietly stepped backward before Richard turned around.

The elevator doors closed just as he left his office.

Vanessa didn't breathe until the elevator reached the lobby.

By the time she reached the underground parking garage, her hands were shaking so violently she dropped her car keys twice.

She climbed into her Mercedes and locked every door.

Only then did she allow herself to cry.

Not because she regretted hurting Khloe.

Not yet.

She cried because she suddenly understood her own place in Richard's world.

Disposable.

Across town...

Harrison had relocated everyone to another safe house.

Not his townhouse.

Not the courthouse archive.

A small stone farmhouse nearly forty miles outside Philadelphia.

It officially belonged to an elderly retired judge who owed Harrison a favor dating back twenty years.

No internet.

No landline.

Only encrypted satellite communication.

The perfect place to disappear.

Khloe sat on the back porch wrapped in a blanket.

The morning sun warmed the rolling fields beyond the property.

For a few precious minutes...

Everything felt normal.

Birds sang.

Wind stirred the tall grass.

Then Harrison walked outside carrying a folder.

"The DNA results came back."

Khloe looked up.

"My baby's okay?"

He smiled gently.

"The baby's healthy."

Relief washed over her face.

"But..."

She noticed his expression.

"What?"

"The hospital ran a standard maternal blood panel."

"And?"

"There was something in your bloodstream."

Khloe frowned.

"What kind of something?"

Harrison handed the report to Eleanor.

She read it once.

Then again.

Her expression hardened.

"This wasn't prescribed."

Khloe felt cold.

"What wasn't?"

Eleanor looked directly at her.

"Someone's been giving you very small doses of oxytocin."

Silence.

Khloe blinked.

"I don't understand."

"It's a hormone."

"What does it do?"

"In controlled amounts..."

"It can stimulate labor."

Khloe's face drained of color.

"No..."

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"Whoever did this wasn't trying to poison you."

"They were trying to make sure your pregnancy became unstable."

Khloe searched her memory.

Prenatal vitamins.

Morning tea.

Supplements.

Doctor appointments.

Then...

She remembered.

Every evening...

Richard insisted on making her herbal tea.

He always smiled as he handed it to her.

"Doctor said stress isn't good for the baby."

She suddenly felt sick.

"I drank it every night..."

Her voice cracked.

"For months."

Harrison quietly closed the folder.

"He wanted the pregnancy weakened before the courthouse."

Khloe looked at him in horror.

"So if I fell..."

He nodded.

"The chances of losing the baby would have been dramatically higher."

No one spoke for nearly a minute.

Finally...

Khloe whispered,

"He planned everything."

At Harrington Commercial Group...

Richard was facing a different problem.

His chief financial officer entered carrying another subpoena.

"This one's federal."

Richard didn't even look up.

"How many now?"

"Three."

He finally raised his eyes.

"Who's behind them?"

"We can't tell."

The CFO hesitated.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"Our cybersecurity team found unusual activity."

"What kind?"

"Someone accessed archived project files."

Richard's expression sharpened.

"Which projects?"

The answer came immediately.

"Riverside Steel."

Richard stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"When?"

"About two hours ago."

"Were files copied?"

"We don't know."

"Find out."

"We're trying."

"No."

Richard slammed both hands onto the conference table.

"I didn't say try."

"I said find out."

Meanwhile...

Eleanor drove alone toward Philadelphia.

She had one destination.

The office of the Pennsylvania Medical Examiner.

An old friend still worked there.

Dr. Leonard Weiss.

He greeted her warmly.

"Eleanor."

"It's been years."

"Too many."

She placed a photograph of the three construction workers on his desk.

"I need everything."

He looked uncomfortable.

"Those files are sealed."

"I know."

"I could lose my license."

She leaned closer.

"Three families already lost everything."

Silence.

Finally...

He sighed.

"Give me ten minutes."

When he returned...

He carried a thin archive box.

Eleanor immediately noticed something strange.

Only three autopsy reports.

But four evidence bags.

She looked up.

"Who's the fourth?"

Leonard froze.

"There wasn't..."

He stopped.

Slowly reopened the file.

His face turned pale.

"There should only be three."

Eleanor picked up the extra evidence bag.

Inside...

A gold cufflink.

Engraved with a single letter.

H

Not Harrington.

The design was different.

Older.

Custom made.

She frowned.

"This wasn't logged?"

Leonard shook his head.

"I've never seen it."

She turned the bag over.

Attached was a faded evidence label.

Recovered beneath victim #2.

Date.

Three years earlier.

No officer signature.

No chain of custody.

Someone had hidden evidence inside the official file.

Her phone buzzed.

Harrison.

"I found something."

"So did I."

"What?"

Eleanor stared at the cufflink.

"I think someone else was at the collapse."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"But this doesn't belong to Richard."

Back at the farmhouse...

Khloe wandered into the kitchen.

She couldn't stop thinking about the tea.

Every cup.

Every smile.

Every gentle kiss on her forehead.

Every promise.

All of it...

A performance.

She opened a cabinet looking for a glass of water.

Instead...

She noticed something unusual.

A tiny envelope tucked beneath the fruit bowl.

No stamp.

No name.

Just one handwritten sentence.

Don't trust the judge.

Khloe's heart stopped.

The judge?

The owner of the farmhouse?

Or...

Someone else?

Before she could call Harrison...

A gunshot echoed outside.

BANG!

Then another.

BANG!

A retired federal marshal shouted from the front yard.

"Incoming!"

Windows exploded inward.

Someone had found the safe house.

And they hadn't come to watch.

May you like

They had come to finish the job.
