CHAPTER 5 The Contract

Vanessa read the final page three times.
The words refused to change.
Objective: Eliminate Harrison Cole before Phase Two begins.
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
This wasn't blackmail.
It wasn't corporate espionage.
It wasn't an affair spiraling out of control.
Someone had planned for Harrison Cole to die.
And judging by the age of the documents, that plan had existed long before Khloe discovered Richard's betrayal.
She hurriedly flipped through the rest of the file.
Photographs.
Addresses.
Schedules.
License plate numbers.
Restaurant reservations.
Copies of Harrison's court appearances.
Even a map of his Manhattan office with handwritten notes marking entrances and emergency exits.
One page contained only three typed words:
"Avoid direct confrontation."
Another:
"Subject rarely travels alone."
The last page listed a date from eighteen months earlier.
Next to it was a single handwritten sentence.
Opportunity lost.
Vanessa's pulse pounded in her ears.
Who was Richard really working with?
The elevator chimed.
Richard's footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Vanessa barely had time to return the file to the safe before he entered the bedroom.
"You still awake?"
She forced a smile.
"I couldn't sleep."
He studied her face.
"You've been crying."
"It's the pregnancy."
He nodded slowly.
"Get some rest."
As he walked into the bathroom, Vanessa glanced once more toward the safe.
For the first time since meeting Richard Harrington...
She wondered whether she had fallen in love with a stranger.
At Harrison's townhouse...
Eleanor spread dozens of documents across the dining table.
Khloe sat nearby, wrapped in a blanket, unable to sleep.
Harrison entered carrying three coffees.
"Anything?"
Eleanor pointed to a city map.
"I think I found a pattern."
Colored pins covered Philadelphia.
Red.
Blue.
Black.
"What am I looking at?" Harrison asked.
"The red pins are every Harrington construction project."
"The blue?"
"Every suspicious financial transfer."
"And the black?"
She paused.
"Every unexplained death connected to those projects."
Khloe stared.
"There are... twelve."
"No."
Eleanor corrected quietly.
"Twelve officially."
She slid another folder across the table.
"I found four more."
Harrison's expression darkened.
"Sixteen."
Eleanor nodded.
"And every case was ruled either accidental or inconclusive."
A retired federal marshal entered from the security room.
"Mr. Cole."
Harrison looked up.
"What is it?"
"You should see this."
They walked to the surveillance monitors.
One camera overlooked the quiet residential street.
A black sedan had been parked across from the townhouse for nearly forty minutes.
Engine off.
Lights off.
Windows tinted.
The marshal zoomed in.
"No plates."
Eleanor frowned.
"They're professionals."
Harrison nodded.
"They're not here to attack."
"Then why?"
"To learn."
He turned toward the marshal.
"Keep recording."
"No one leaves."
Across town...
The elderly man who had received the mysterious photograph finally reached the police station.
"My name is Thomas Reed."
"I need to report a crime."
The desk officer looked up.
"What kind of crime?"
Thomas placed the photograph on the counter.
"I lied."
The officer frowned.
"What?"
"Three years ago."
"I lied under oath."
One hour later...
Thomas sat inside an interrogation room.
Two detectives listened silently.
"I worked security on the parking garage project."
"You testified the collapse was caused by defective materials."
Thomas nodded slowly.
"That wasn't true."
"Then what happened?"
He closed his eyes.
"I saw the inspection report."
"It said the building wasn't safe."
"Who signed it?"
He whispered the name.
"Victor Salazar."
The detectives exchanged a glance.
"Continue."
"I watched Richard Harrington read that report."
"What did he do?"
"He laughed."
The room fell silent.
Thomas's voice shook.
"He said..."
"'Delay the repairs.'"
"'Every extra day costs money.'"
One detective leaned forward.
"Can you prove this?"
Thomas reached into his jacket.
"I kept a copy."
He removed an old flash drive.
"I've been hiding it for three years."
At the same moment...
A black SUV stopped outside the police station.
Two men remained inside.
One watched the entrance through binoculars.
The other spoke quietly into a phone.
"He came forward."
A woman's voice answered.
"So it's finally happening."
"What are your orders?"
Silence.
Then...
"No witnesses."
The call ended.
Inside the station...
Thomas handed over the flash drive.
Before the detective could plug it into a computer...
The building shook.
BOOM!
Every light went out.
The emergency alarms screamed.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
"What the hell?"
The detectives rushed into the hallway.
Smoke poured through the lobby.
A parked delivery van outside had exploded.
People screamed.
Officers sprinted toward the entrance.
Sprinklers activated overhead.
For thirty seconds...
Complete chaos.
When power returned...
The interrogation room door stood open.
Thomas Reed was gone.
The flash drive...
Gone.
One detective shouted,
"Lock the building!"
Too late.
Security footage later showed a man dressed as a firefighter calmly escorting Thomas through the emergency exit during the confusion.
No one questioned him.
Back at Harrison's townhouse...
His phone rang.
The homicide lieutenant sounded shaken.
"We lost the witness."
Harrison stood.
"What do you mean 'lost'?"
"He disappeared."
"How?"
"We're reviewing the footage."
Harrison closed his eyes.
"They created a distraction."
"...Didn't they?"
Silence on the other end confirmed it.
Eleanor quietly whispered,
"They're always one move ahead."
Harrison looked toward the security monitors.
The black sedan was still parked outside.
Waiting.
Watching.
Learning.
He smiled for the first time that night.
"No."
Eleanor looked at him.
"What?"
"They think we're reacting."
He reached into a locked drawer and removed another folder.
Khloe frowned.
"You already have a plan?"
"I've had one since yesterday."
He opened the folder.
Across the top was written:
OPERATION MIRROR
Inside were photographs of decoy vehicles.
Safe houses.
Alternate phone numbers.
False travel itineraries.
Even fake medical records showing Khloe had been transferred to a private maternity clinic in Pittsburgh.
Eleanor slowly smiled.
"You've been feeding them lies."
"Only small ones."
"And the car outside?"
Harrison looked at the live camera feed.
"They're about to follow the wrong target."
At exactly 2:15 a.m., a black SUV exited the townhouse garage.
Its windows were heavily tinted.
Two armed security guards sat inside.
To anyone watching...
It appeared Khloe was being evacuated.
The black sedan immediately started its engine and followed.
Neither vehicle noticed a delivery truck quietly leaving through the rear alley thirty seconds later.
Inside that ordinary truck...
Khloe sat beside Eleanor.
Harrison drove.
No security escort.
No flashing lights.
Just three people disappearing into the sleeping city.
Twenty minutes later, the black sedan realized the SUV it had followed was empty.
By then...
Harrison, Khloe, and Eleanor had already arrived at a place no one would think to search.
A forgotten courthouse archive beneath the old Montgomery County Records Building.
Because Harrison believed the safest place to hide...
May you like
Was inside the very building where the truth had first been buried.
