CHAPTER 11 The Hidden Message

Harrison stared at the encrypted message.
Check the ultrasound photos.
No sender.
No traceable route.
Only four words.
Behind him, Khloe cried out as another contraction tightened across her abdomen.
Eleanor never took her eyes off the staircase.
The tiny red light beneath the banister blinked once...
Then went dark.
"Remote trigger," she whispered.
"They're watching."
Harrison slowly backed away from the stairs.
"No one goes near it."
The farmhouse remained eerily silent.
The lullaby had stopped.
The strange child's voice was gone.
Only Khloe's labored breathing echoed through the first floor.
Harrison opened the emergency medical bag.
"Eleanor."
She immediately understood.
"The ultrasound folder."
Khloe frowned through the pain.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
Harrison didn't answer.
He removed every prenatal scan from the folder Richard had insisted on organizing himself.
Most looked ordinary.
Black-and-white images of a growing baby.
Dates.
Measurements.
Doctor's notes.
Then...
Eleanor stopped at the sixth scan.
"Wait."
She held it toward the light.
Near the lower right corner...
Almost invisible...
Tiny dots had been printed into the image.
Not random.
A pattern.
Harrison grabbed a magnifying lens from the medical kit.
The dots formed a sequence.
Numbers.
Letters.
Coordinates.
Khloe looked confused.
"What is it?"
"A hidden print layer."
"Someone embedded information inside the ultrasound image."
"Who?"
Harrison's expression hardened.
"Not the hospital."
Eleanor entered the coordinates into an offline GPS device.
The screen loaded.
Everyone fell silent.
The location wasn't another Harrington property.
It wasn't even in Pennsylvania.
It pointed to...
A private cemetery outside Wilmington, Delaware.
Specifically...
Section D.
Plot 18.
Khloe whispered,
"A grave?"
At that moment...
The satellite phone rang.
Harrison answered.
"This is Cole."
An elderly man's voice replied.
"You don't know me."
"But I knew your father."
Harrison's heartbeat quickened.
"Who is this?"
"No names."
"Listen carefully."
"The coordinates lead to a headstone."
"Don't dig beneath it."
"Look behind it."
The caller coughed violently.
"They'll expect you to search underground."
"The truth isn't buried."
"It's hidden."
Before Harrison could ask another question...
The line went dead.
Outside...
Police sirens finally approached the farmhouse.
Local deputies.
Not federal agents.
Not state police.
Just county patrol units responding to reports of gunfire.
Eleanor looked through the window.
"They're here too fast."
Harrison nodded.
"They were called before the attack ended."
"Meaning?"
"Someone wanted law enforcement involved."
A sheriff stepped out of the lead cruiser.
Hands visible.
Calm.
Professional.
He knocked on the reinforced front door.
"Mr. Cole?"
Harrison remained silent.
The sheriff continued.
"We received reports of an armed assault."
"We're here to help."
Eleanor quietly shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
"His badge."
She zoomed in using a security monitor.
"The placement is wrong."
Harrison looked.
She was right.
The county insignia sat almost an inch lower than regulation.
Small detail.
Huge implication.
The uniform had been assembled.
Not issued.
Three more "deputies" exited their vehicles.
All wore identical boots.
Brand new.
No mud.
Despite supposedly driving through wet farmland.
Harrison slowly smiled.
"They're not deputies."
The fake sheriff knocked again.
"Mr. Cole."
"If you don't open the door..."
"We'll be forced to enter."
Harrison calmly switched on the exterior intercom.
"No warrant."
Silence.
Then...
The sheriff smiled.
"You've always been difficult."
He removed his hat.
For the first time...
Harrison saw his face clearly.
Recognition struck instantly.
"Arthur Sinclair."
The chairman of Harrington Commercial's board.
Arthur chuckled.
"I wondered how long it would take."
Khloe stared at the monitor in disbelief.
"The board chairman?"
Eleanor answered quietly,
"He isn't just a board chairman."
"He's field command."
Arthur looked directly into the security camera.
"You've uncovered more than expected."
He folded his hands behind his back.
"So let me make you an offer."
Harrison didn't respond.
Arthur continued.
"Give me the photograph."
"The notebook."
"And every copy you've made."
"I walk away."
Khloe laughed bitterly.
"You expect us to believe that?"
Arthur met her gaze through the camera.
"No."
"I expect your daughter to survive."
The room fell silent.
Khloe instinctively placed both hands over her stomach.
Arthur noticed.
His smile faded.
"You think this child matters because she's Richard's heir."
He slowly shook his head.
"You're wrong."
Harrison narrowed his eyes.
"What are you talking about?"
Arthur looked almost amused.
"You still haven't figured it out."
Another contraction hit Khloe.
Harder this time.
She nearly collapsed.
Eleanor checked her pulse.
"We're running out of time."
Arthur glanced at his watch.
"I'll give you five minutes."
He returned to his vehicle.
The fake deputies spread into tactical positions around the farmhouse.
Not preparing to attack.
Preparing to wait.
As if they knew Harrison couldn't remain inside forever.
Harrison turned toward Eleanor.
"What aren't they telling us?"
She thought for several seconds.
Then looked slowly toward Khloe.
"The baby."
"What about her?"
"They keep changing objectives."
"First they wanted her dead."
"Then alive."
"Now they're negotiating."
She swallowed.
"That means..."
"...the child is more valuable than any evidence."
Khloe felt another kick.
Different this time.
Stronger.
Almost rhythmic.
She frowned.
"The baby's moving strangely."
Eleanor immediately grabbed the fetal heart monitor from the medical bag.
She attached the sensors.
The room filled with the rapid heartbeat of the unborn child.
Then...
A second rhythm appeared.
Everyone froze.
Khloe looked terrified.
"What..."
Harrison stared at the monitor.
"There are two heartbeats."
Khloe shook her head violently.
"No."
"The doctors would've known."
Eleanor adjusted the sensor.
The second rhythm disappeared.
Then returned.
Not another baby.
Something else.
Electronic.
Tiny.
Perfectly timed between heartbeats.
Silence consumed the room.
Eleanor slowly looked up.
Her voice was barely audible.
"Someone..."
"...implanted a tracking device."
At that exact moment, Arthur Sinclair's phone vibrated outside.
He smiled after reading the message.
Then he looked directly toward the farmhouse and quietly said,
May you like
"Now we know exactly where she is."
