CHAPTER 1 The First Move

Khloe stared at her brother across the polished walnut desk, unable to steady the trembling in her hands.
Outside Harrison Cole's office, Manhattan shimmered beneath a blanket of evening lights, but inside, silence settled like concrete.
Harrison never rushed.
He had built an entire legal empire on one simple principle.
Emotion made people careless.
Evidence destroyed them.
He slid the tablet back toward Khloe.
"Tell me everything."
She swallowed.
"When did you first suspect?"
"I... I don't know."
"Guess."
Khloe closed her eyes.
"The business trips."
"Earlier."
"The new phone password."
"Earlier."
She frowned.
"The day I told him I was pregnant."
Harrison leaned back.
"What happened?"
"He looked disappointed."
Those four words hung heavily between them.
She had replayed that moment a thousand times.
Richard had smiled.
He had said all the right things.
Yet none of them had reached his eyes.
At the time, she blamed stress.
Now she understood.
He already belonged to someone else.
Harrison folded his hands.
"You know what saved your life today?"
She looked at him.
"You didn't confront him."
"What?"
"If you'd accused Richard tonight, every account would be emptied before sunrise."
He opened a legal pad.
"They've been planning this for months."
He wrote three words.
Money. Child. Reputation.
"They want all three."
Khloe's breathing became uneven.
"My baby..."
"They'll come after custody."
She stared at him in disbelief.
"The baby's not even born."
"They don't care."
He tapped one of the screenshots.
"Vanessa called your child dead weight."
He slid another image forward.
"And she referred to her own unborn baby."
Khloe's eyes widened.
"I... I didn't even realize..."
"They're expecting."
The realization struck harder than any slap.
Vanessa wasn't simply the mistress.
She was carrying Richard's child.
The room suddenly felt too small.
Khloe pressed both hands against her stomach.
Her daughter kicked gently.
Almost as if reminding her she wasn't alone.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I did everything right."
"I know."
"I loved him."
"I know."
"I waited six years."
"I know."
Her voice broke.
"So why wasn't I enough?"
Harrison didn't answer immediately.
Because there was no answer.
Only the truth.
"People don't cheat because someone else isn't enough."
"They cheat because character eventually outruns charm."
For several moments, neither sibling spoke.
Then Harrison reached for his phone.
"I'm making three calls."
"To who?"
"The first is a forensic accountant."
"The second?"
"A private investigator."
"The third?"
Khloe noticed something unusual.
A tiny smile.
Cold.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
"The woman who helped put three governors in prison."
Khloe blinked.
"You know Eleanor Price?"
"I hired her."
"The investigator?"
"The best."
Within forty minutes, a silver-haired woman stepped into the office carrying nothing except a leather notebook.
She appeared no older than sixty.
No jewelry.
No perfume.
No unnecessary conversation.
She shook Harrison's hand.
Then looked directly at Khloe.
"Do you want revenge?"
Khloe hesitated.
"No."
Eleanor nodded.
"Good."
She sat.
"Revenge is emotional."
She opened the notebook.
"Justice pays better."
For the next two hours, Eleanor asked questions that seemed unrelated.
What toothpaste did Richard use?
How often did he golf?
Did he ever leave receipts inside jacket pockets?
Who cleaned the vehicles?
Which credit cards did he personally carry?
Did he own watches?
Pens?
Cash?
Every answer became another note.
Finally, Eleanor closed the notebook.
"He has a routine."
Harrison looked up.
"So?"
"No one this organized suddenly becomes careless."
Khloe frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
Eleanor smiled faintly.
"...the affair is probably the least illegal thing he's done."
The room fell silent again.
Harrison's phone vibrated.
A message from his forensic accountant.
He opened it.
His expression didn't change.
But Khloe knew that look.
Something terrible had just been confirmed.
"What?"
He turned the screen toward Eleanor.
She read it once.
Then twice.
Finally she looked at Khloe.
"Richard didn't move five million dollars offshore."
Khloe whispered,
"How much?"
Eleanor answered quietly.
"Twenty-eight million."
Khloe nearly stopped breathing.
"That's impossible."
"It came from multiple construction subsidiaries."
"He'll say they're business expenses."
Harrison shook his head.
"No."
He zoomed in on the spreadsheet.
"See these transfers?"
Every payment happened within forty-eight hours of a fatal construction accident.
Khloe looked confused.
"What accident?"
Harrison opened another file.
A newspaper headline appeared.
THREE WORKERS DIE AFTER PARKING GARAGE COLLAPSE.
Date.
Eighteen months earlier.
The project belonged to...
Harrington Commercial Group.
Khloe felt ice spread through her chest.
"I remember this."
"They blamed the subcontractor."
"They settled."
"They moved on."
Eleanor quietly slid another document across the table.
"The subcontractor went bankrupt."
"The insurance company refused payment."
"The families accepted tiny settlements."
Khloe looked between them.
"What are you saying?"
Harrison's eyes remained fixed on the financial records.
"I'm saying..."
He clicked another file.
"...someone made twenty-eight million dollars immediately after three men died."
Nobody spoke.
Khloe suddenly remembered something.
During that exact week...
Richard had celebrated.
He claimed a difficult lawsuit had ended.
He bought a new Aston Martin.
He opened a bottle of vintage Bordeaux.
He kissed her forehead.
And thanked God for blessing their family.
Her stomach turned.
"No..."
Another vibration interrupted the silence.
This time it came from Eleanor's phone.
She glanced down.
Then looked directly at Harrison.
"I found Vanessa."
"So fast?"
"I already knew who she was."
"You did?"
Eleanor nodded.
"Three years ago she testified in a fraud investigation."
"What happened?"
"Charges disappeared."
"Why?"
She slowly placed the phone on the desk.
A photograph filled the screen.
Vanessa...
Standing beside a federal prosecutor.
Smiling.
Khloe frowned.
"Who is that?"
Harrison recognized the face instantly.
His jaw tightened.
"That's Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Mercer."
"The prosecutor?"
"The one who dismissed Vanessa's fraud case."
Eleanor nodded.
"And according to my source..."
She paused.
"...he resigned six months later."
"Why?"
"No official reason."
Harrison looked thoughtful.
"Unofficially?"
Eleanor took a slow breath.
"He vanished."
Another silence.
This one heavier than all the others.
Khloe whispered,
"What does that have to do with Richard?"
Eleanor answered with frightening calm.
"I don't know."
"Yet."
She stood.
"I'll start tonight."
As she reached the office door, she stopped.
Without turning around, she said one sentence that made every hair on Khloe's arms stand up.
"If Richard Harrington is willing to steal from his pregnant wife..."
"...I wonder what else he's willing to bury."
She walked out.
The office door clicked shut.
Neither Harrison nor Khloe noticed the black SUV parked across the street below.
Inside, a man wearing an earpiece lowered a camera.
He picked up his phone.
"The sister met Harrison."
A woman's voice answered.
"I expected that."
"They also met Eleanor Price."
Silence.
Longer this time.
Then the woman spoke again.
"That's a problem."
"What should we do?"
Another pause.
Finally, the answer came.
"Tell Richard..."
"...it's time to move up the schedule."
The call ended.
Inside the SUV, the man started the engine.
He never noticed another vehicle parked fifty yards behind him.
Inside that second car, a retired detective quietly photographed his license plate before speaking into a recorder.
"Target has surveillance."
He paused.
Then added six words.
May you like
"They're watching the wrong family."
