CHAPTER 4 The Woman in the ICU

Rain hammered the windows of Philadelphia General Hospital long before sunrise.

The intensive care unit remained unusually quiet.

Machines hummed.

Monitors blinked.

Nurses moved in measured silence.

Behind the reinforced glass of Room 714 lay Diana Mercer.

Her head was wrapped in thick white bandages.

Bruises darkened her throat.

A ventilator breathed for her.

To the hospital staff, she was another victim of a violent home invasion.

To Harrison Cole...

She had just become the most important witness in Pennsylvania.

Two plainclothes officers stood outside her room.

Harrison frowned.

"You requested police protection?"

The homicide lieutenant nodded.

"I requested four officers."

"You got two."

"Budget."

Eleanor looked down the hallway.

"No."

"What?"

She pointed toward one of the officers.

"He keeps checking the elevators."

"So?"

"Not the patient."

"The mirrors."

The lieutenant looked confused.

Eleanor lowered her voice.

"He's waiting for someone."

At 7:42 a.m., a doctor approached.

"Mr. Cole?"

"Yes."

"Your witness regained consciousness for about thirty seconds."

Harrison's eyes sharpened.

"Can I speak with her?"

"Briefly."

"She's heavily sedated."

"And she's terrified."

Inside Room 714...

Diana's eyes fluttered open as Harrison stepped closer.

She struggled to focus.

"You..."

Her voice was barely audible.

"Harrison Cole."

He nodded.

"I'm here."

She tried lifting one hand.

Failed.

Her fingers trembled weakly.

"They..."

She coughed violently.

"They're everywhere."

Harrison leaned closer.

"Who?"

Her breathing became erratic.

"The Foundation..."

His expression changed instantly.

"What foundation?"

She looked toward the door in panic.

"No..."

"No names..."

"They'll kill..."

The heart monitor suddenly screamed.

Doctors rushed inside.

"Nurse!"

"Blood pressure's crashing!"

Everyone was forced into the hallway.

The door slammed shut.

Ten minutes later...

A nurse emerged.

"I'm sorry."

"She's unconscious again."

Harrison remained silent.

But Eleanor noticed something.

Before collapsing...

Diana hadn't looked at the doctors.

She had looked...

At the hallway.

Specifically...

Toward the vending machines.

Eleanor walked there casually.

Coffee.

Snacks.

Nothing unusual.

Then she bent down as if tying her shoe.

Hidden beneath the machine...

A tiny wireless camera.

Still recording.

She carefully photographed it before touching nothing.

Someone had been watching Diana's room.

Long before they arrived.

Meanwhile...

Richard Harrington faced an emergency board meeting.

Directors filled the conference room.

The atmosphere felt different.

Too quiet.

Too formal.

His chief financial officer avoided eye contact.

The general counsel looked unusually tense.

Richard took his seat.

"Let's begin."

No one moved.

Finally, board chairman Arthur Sinclair cleared his throat.

"We've received inquiries."

"About what?"

"The parking garage collapse."

Richard forced a smile.

"That case was closed."

Arthur slid a folder across the table.

"It may not be anymore."

Richard opened it.

Inside...

A subpoena.

His stomach tightened.

Issued by the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

Requesting financial records dating back four years.

He looked up slowly.

"Who authorized this?"

Arthur answered honestly.

"We don't know."

Across the room...

Vanessa watched Richard carefully.

Something wasn't right.

For the first time since she'd known him...

He looked afraid.

Later that afternoon...

Eleanor met an old friend inside a quiet diner.

Retired FBI Special Agent Samuel Ortiz.

He glanced at the photograph of the hidden camera.

"You found this in the ICU?"

"Yes."

He sighed.

"Then you're already late."

"What do you mean?"

"This isn't how local criminals operate."

He stirred his coffee slowly.

"This is surveillance."

"Professional."

"Organized."

He looked around before lowering his voice.

"You remember Ashcroft?"

Eleanor froze.

"I thought that file was sealed."

"It was."

"So why mention it?"

Samuel met her eyes.

"Because I saw the same equipment."

Silence settled between them.

Finally, Eleanor asked,

"You think it's connected?"

"I hope not."

"Why?"

Samuel answered with only one sentence.

"Out of thirty-seven witnesses..."

"Only three survived."

That evening...

Khloe refused to return to the Harrington mansion.

Instead, Harrison brought her to his townhouse overlooking the Schuylkill River.

Security cameras covered every entrance.

Motion sensors protected every window.

Two retired federal marshals quietly monitored the property from an unmarked SUV.

Khloe noticed all of it.

"You planned this."

Harrison smiled faintly.

"I prepare."

"For what?"

"For the day someone comes after my family."

She looked at him.

"You really thought this could happen?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Then...

"I've made enemies."

Khloe wandered into the guest bedroom.

On the nightstand sat a framed photograph.

Two children.

A teenage Harrison.

A smiling little girl missing her front tooth.

Khloe.

She picked it up.

"You still keep this?"

Harrison appeared in the doorway.

"You were six."

"You made me carry your fishing gear."

"You insisted."

She laughed softly for the first time in days.

Then the smile faded.

"I miss Mom."

"So do I."

"If she were alive..."

Harrison gently finished the sentence.

"...Richard never would've gotten close."

Across town...

Vanessa stood alone inside Richard's penthouse.

She opened a closet searching for a blanket.

Instead...

She discovered a locked steel safe.

She frowned.

Richard never mentioned it.

Curiosity won.

She tried his birthday.

Wrong.

Their anniversary.

Wrong.

Then...

The birthday of their unborn child.

The safe clicked open.

Vanessa smiled.

Until she looked inside.

No money.

No jewelry.

Only documents.

Dozens of them.

Birth certificates.

Passports.

Corporate files.

And one thick manila envelope labeled:

COLE

Her smile disappeared.

Hands shaking, she opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Khloe.

Harrison.

Their childhood home.

Their parents.

Even recent pictures of Khloe entering prenatal appointments.

Someone had been following the Cole family.

For years.

Vanessa whispered,

"What have you done, Richard...?"

Suddenly...

She heard the elevator.

Richard was home.

Panicking, she shoved everything back into the safe.

It locked one second before the apartment door opened.

"Vanessa?"

She forced a smile.

"In here."

Richard kissed her forehead.

"You look nervous."

She swallowed.

"I'm just tired."

He stared at her for several seconds.

Long enough to make her wonder if he knew.

Then his phone buzzed.

He answered.

"Yes?"

The voice on the other end spoke for less than ten seconds.

Richard's expression hardened.

"When?"

Another pause.

"I'll handle it."

He ended the call.

Vanessa tried to sound casual.

"What happened?"

Richard looked toward the city skyline.

"Diana Mercer woke up."

Vanessa relaxed slightly.

"But she went unconscious again."

Richard nodded.

"That's not the problem."

"What is?"

He slowly slipped on his jacket.

"The problem..."

"...is that she said two words before she collapsed."

"What words?"

Richard didn't answer.

He simply walked toward the elevator.

After the doors closed...

Vanessa quietly returned to the safe.

She opened the file labeled COLE one more time.

This time she reached the final page.

Her blood ran cold.

It wasn't a surveillance report.

It was a contract.

At the bottom...

Beneath several blacked-out signatures...

One line remained perfectly readable.
