CHAPTER 15 The Judge's Confession

The front door swung shut behind Judge William Ashcroft with a quiet click.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Khloe sat on the floor, one arm wrapped around her stomach, struggling through another contraction.
Harrison slowly stepped in front of her.
His body became a shield.
Judge Ashcroft noticed.
A faint smile crossed his weathered face.
"You've always been your father's son."
Arthur Sinclair entered behind him with four armed operators.
Their rifles remained lowered.
Not because they weren't dangerous.
Because they were confident.
They believed the fight was already over.
Ashcroft looked around the farmhouse.
His eyes settled on the Genesis file in Harrison's hands.
"So..."
"You found it."
Harrison's voice was cold.
"You murdered my father."
The judge sighed.
"No."
"I signed the warrant that made his murder legal."
Silence.
Even Arthur looked away.
Ashcroft continued.
"Your father discovered a financial pipeline."
"He thought it funded political corruption."
"He was wrong."
"What was it funding?"
"The future."
Frank Donnelly laughed bitterly.
"The future?"
"You murdered children."
Ashcroft didn't react.
"History remembers outcomes."
"Not methods."
Khloe cried out in pain.
Another contraction.
Eleanor checked her pulse.
"Sixty seconds apart."
Arthur glanced at Dr. Melissa Crane, who had just entered through the broken front window with two medical assistants.
"Doctor."
Dr. Crane knelt beside Khloe.
"I'm taking the baby."
Harrison immediately pointed his pistol.
"No."
The room froze.
Dr. Crane didn't flinch.
"If I don't deliver now..."
"They both die."
Khloe looked toward Harrison.
She saw something she had never seen before.
He couldn't calculate a way out.
Every option ended badly.
Judge Ashcroft stepped closer.
"Harrison."
"I'll make this easy."
"You give us the child."
"Your sister lives."
"You refuse..."
"...she dies before sunset."
Frank struggled to his feet.
"You don't need the child."
Ashcroft turned.
"No?"
"You already have enough data."
The judge smiled sadly.
"You still don't understand Genesis."
He nodded toward Khloe.
"Her daughter isn't valuable because of Richard Harrington."
Harrison tightened his grip on the pistol.
"Then why?"
Ashcroft answered calmly.
"Because Richard isn't the father."
The words shattered the room.
Khloe stared.
"What?"
"No..."
"That's impossible."
"I've never..."
She couldn't even finish the sentence.
Dr. Crane quietly opened her medical bag.
"Biologically..."
"The pregnancy began naturally."
"But approximately five weeks later..."
She hesitated.
"...the embryo was altered."
Harrison's face hardened.
"Altered?"
"A fetal intervention procedure."
Khloe shook violently.
"No."
"I never had surgery."
"You were asleep during the emergency appendectomy."
Khloe searched her memory.
One year earlier.
Severe abdominal pain.
Emergency admission.
She had been told her appendix ruptured.
Richard never left her bedside.
She remembered waking with a scar.
She never questioned it.
Dr. Crane lowered her eyes.
"It wasn't your appendix."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Frank slammed his fist onto the floor.
"You monsters."
Ashcroft ignored him.
"The embryo carried specific markers."
"The intervention accelerated what nature had already begun."
Khloe's voice cracked.
"My baby..."
Dr. Crane looked genuinely conflicted.
"She's still your daughter."
"But..."
"...she also became the final stage of Genesis."
Arthur stepped forward.
"We're done talking."
He raised one hand.
The operators moved.
Weapons came up.
Harrison instantly fired.
BANG!
The bullet shattered a lamp beside Arthur's head.
Not a killing shot.
A distraction.
Eleanor threw another smoke grenade.
The room vanished into white fog.
Chaos erupted.
Gunfire exploded.
Furniture splintered.
Someone screamed.
Khloe felt strong arms lifting her.
"Harrison?"
"No."
It was Frank.
"I'm getting you out."
Behind them...
Judge Ashcroft calmly walked through the smoke.
He wasn't running.
He wasn't afraid.
He simply watched.
As though he'd seen this scene before.
Outside...
A deafening explosion rocked the front yard.
Not from the attackers.
From the road.
A convoy of black SUVs tore through the perimeter fence.
One slammed directly into Arthur's vehicle.
Another blocked the tactical team's retreat.
Doors burst open.
Men in dark blue tactical uniforms flooded the property.
Across their body armor...
Bright yellow letters.
FBI
Agent Rachel Moreno stepped out first.
She held a bullhorn.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop your weapons!"
Arthur stared in disbelief.
"How..."
Moreno smiled.
"We never lost the satellite."
"You lost the fake one."
The tactical operators hesitated.
Some lowered their rifles.
Others fired.
A full firefight erupted across the farmhouse grounds.
Inside...
Harrison reached Khloe just as she collapsed again.
Blood spread across the wooden floor.
Dr. Crane checked quickly.
Her face changed.
"Harrison."
"What?"
"We're out of time."
"The baby's coming."
"Now."
Outside...
Judge Ashcroft quietly slipped away during the gunfire.
No one noticed him disappear into the woods.
Except...
Richard Harrington.
Who had just arrived at the edge of the property.
Hidden inside another SUV.
He watched the FBI surround the farmhouse.
His phone rang.
Ashcroft.
Richard answered immediately.
"It's over."
The judge's voice remained perfectly calm.
"No."
"It has only changed."
"They have the file."
"They have Khloe."
"They have everything."
A pause.
Then Ashcroft spoke the sentence that froze Richard's blood.
"Burn Genesis."
Richard whispered,
"...What?"
Ashcroft repeated himself.
"Burn everything."
The line went dead.
Richard slowly looked toward the farmhouse one last time.
Then reached into his jacket.
He removed a small brass key.
Engraved on one side were the words:
GENESIS VAULT 1
He closed his fist around it.
Far beneath Philadelphia...
Inside a forgotten underground laboratory...
Red warning lights suddenly began flashing.
A computerized voice echoed through empty corridors:
Emergency protocol activated.
Genesis Archive scheduled for destruction in 30 minutes.
