CHAPTER 12 The Signal

The farmhouse fell silent.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

The only sound was the rapid thump... thump... thump of Khloe's baby's heartbeat through the fetal monitor.

Then...

A faint electronic pulse.

Beep.

Exactly between two heartbeats.

Again.

Beep.

Khloe stared at the monitor in horror.

"What is that?"

Eleanor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she unplugged the monitor and listened again.

The electronic rhythm disappeared.

She plugged it back in.

The pulse returned.

Harrison frowned.

"It's interference?"

"No."

Eleanor slowly shook her head.

"It's synchronized."

Khloe felt her stomach tighten.

"Are you saying..."

"...someone implanted something inside my baby?"

Eleanor looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

A long pause.

"I hope not."

Outside...

Arthur Sinclair stood beside his SUV, watching the farmhouse through binoculars.

One of his men approached.

"They're not coming out."

"They will."

"How can you be sure?"

Arthur smiled faintly.

"Pregnancy is a clock."

He checked his watch.

"We don't need to rush."

Inside...

Harrison grabbed every prenatal record.

Every ultrasound.

Every blood test.

Every doctor's report.

He spread them across the kitchen table.

"Richard insisted on one obstetrician."

Khloe nodded.

"Dr. Melissa Crane."

Eleanor's expression changed.

"I know that name."

Harrison looked up.

"From where?"

"Not medicine."

"Insurance fraud."

She closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"Seven years ago."

"She testified in a federal case."

"What happened?"

"The case disappeared."

Harrison immediately searched the physician's licensing history through his offline legal database.

Three disciplinary complaints.

All dismissed.

One malpractice lawsuit.

Sealed.

Then...

One strange detail.

Dr. Melissa Crane had worked for exactly eighteen months at a private fertility clinic.

The clinic's largest financial backer...

Harrington Medical Foundation.

Khloe whispered,

"No..."

Every IVF consultation.

Every fertility appointment.

Every pregnancy exam.

Richard had chosen the doctors.

Every single one.

Harrison looked toward his sister.

"After you became pregnant naturally..."

"Did Dr. Crane recommend any additional procedures?"

Khloe nodded slowly.

"She said the baby was positioned unusually."

"What procedure?"

"A specialized fetal monitoring implant."

Silence.

Eleanor's eyes widened.

"What?"

Khloe frowned.

"It wasn't surgery."

"She said it was a harmless micro-sensor."

"My insurance covered it."

Harrison's face turned pale.

"Khloe..."

"There is no such procedure."

The room went completely still.

Khloe felt as though the air had vanished.

"What are you saying?"

Harrison spoke carefully.

"I'm saying..."

"...someone lied to you."

At that exact moment...

The satellite phone rang again.

Unknown caller.

Harrison answered.

A woman spoke.

Softly.

"Don't let them deliver the baby."

Harrison stood frozen.

"Who is this?"

"I don't have much time."

"The hospital..."

"...is part of it."

The connection crackled.

"They're waiting."

"For what?"

"The birth."

"Why?"

The woman whispered one sentence.

"They don't want the mother."

"They want the blood."

The call disconnected.

Khloe nearly collapsed.

"The blood?"

Eleanor caught her before she fell.

"Easy."

"No..."

Khloe's breathing became frantic.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

"But we're going to find out."

Outside...

Arthur received another encrypted message.

SIGNAL CONFIRMED

Below it...

A moving GPS marker.

Directly over the farmhouse.

He smiled.

"So..."

"The transmitter still works."

One of his men asked,

"Do we move?"

Arthur shook his head.

"Not yet."

Meanwhile...

Nearly one hundred miles away...

Inside a maximum-security federal prison...

The scarred inmate from the newspaper article sat across from the prison warden.

"I've decided to cooperate."

The warden looked surprised.

"After twenty-one years?"

The inmate nodded.

"I need one phone call."

Forty minutes later...

Harrison's satellite phone rang for the third time.

"This is Cole."

"My name is Frank Donnelly."

Harrison froze.

Michael Donnelly's younger brother.

"I've been waiting twenty-one years to make this call."

Harrison sat down.

"I'm listening."

Frank took a deep breath.

"My brother didn't die in a car accident."

"You know that now."

"What you don't know..."

"...is why they killed him."

Harrison activated the recorder.

"Go on."

"My brother wasn't investigating unsafe buildings."

"He was investigating children."

Silence.

Harrison looked toward Khloe.

Frank continued.

"Harrington Development wasn't just constructing luxury properties."

"They were building underground medical facilities."

Khloe frowned.

"For what?"

Frank's answer came slowly.

"I never knew."

"My brother only left one note."

"What note?"

Frank unfolded an old piece of paper.

His voice trembled as he read it.

'If they ever learn about Project Genesis... no child will ever be safe again.'

The name echoed through the farmhouse.

Project Genesis.

Neither Harrison nor Eleanor had ever heard it.

But Arthur Sinclair had.

Outside...

His phone buzzed.

Only one sentence appeared.

THEY KNOW THE PROJECT NAME.

Arthur's smile disappeared instantly.

For the first time that day...

He looked genuinely worried.

He climbed into his SUV.

Started the engine.

Then gave an order over the encrypted radio.

"Forget the evidence."

"Forget Harrison."

"Move to Phase Two."

A voice answered,

"What about the woman?"

Arthur replied without hesitation.

"Take Khloe alive."

Before anyone could respond...

A deafening roar echoed across the fields.

Everyone looked toward the sky.

A medical helicopter descended toward the farmhouse.

Its bright white paint displayed the logo of a regional trauma hospital.

Khloe looked relieved.

"An air ambulance..."

Eleanor didn't smile.

Instead, she lifted her binoculars.

Focused on the aircraft.

Then whispered,

"That's not a medical crew."

Harrison grabbed the binoculars.

The helicopter's registration number had been painted on.

Poorly.

One digit was crooked.

A fake aircraft.

Disguised as an emergency rescue.

The helicopter touched down less than fifty yards from the farmhouse.

The side door slid open.

Not paramedics.

Six armed men in black tactical gear jumped out.

And leading them...

Stepping calmly onto the grass...

Was Dr. Melissa Crane.

Khloe's obstetrician.

Still wearing her white medical coat.

She looked toward the farmhouse and spoke into a radio.

"Prepare the operating room."

May you like

"We're delivering the baby today."
