CHAPTER 7 Locker 217

The anonymous call reached Harrison's encrypted phone at 5:18 a.m.
No caller ID.
No traceable route.
Only a distorted voice.
"Locker 217 is a trap."
The line disconnected before Harrison could respond.
He replayed the recording three times.
Same words.
Same calm tone.
No background noise.
No clues.
Eleanor folded her arms.
"They knew we'd find the tape."
Khloe looked between them.
"Then why leave it?"
"Because," Harrison answered quietly, "sometimes the fastest way to kill someone... is to let them think they're discovering the truth."
The three of them remained inside the archive until sunrise.
A map of the former Riverside Steel Yard lay spread across the table.
The property covered nearly thirty acres.
Most of the buildings had been demolished.
Only one warehouse remained standing.
Warehouse C.
According to county blueprints...
The old employee locker room was directly beneath it.
Khloe looked at the map.
"So we don't go."
Harrison didn't answer.
Eleanor did.
"We go."
Khloe frowned.
"You just said it's a trap."
"It is."
"Then why?"
Eleanor slid a photograph across the table.
"Because traps reveal hunters."
At 8:30 a.m., three vehicles left the underground archive.
None contained Harrison.
None contained Khloe.
None followed the same route.
Every vehicle carried decoys.
Retired federal marshals.
Private investigators.
Former military contractors.
If someone was watching...
They would have too many targets.
Meanwhile, Harrison, Khloe, and Eleanor exited through an old maintenance tunnel half a mile away.
They climbed into an aging white plumbing van with faded company logos.
To anyone passing by...
They looked like ordinary maintenance workers.
Across town...
Inside a surveillance van parked near the archive...
A man wearing headphones frowned.
"They split up."
His partner cursed under his breath.
"Which vehicle?"
"I don't know."
The first man checked six different camera feeds.
"No visual on Cole."
His phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"We lost him."
Silence.
Then the woman on the other end spoke.
"Impossible."
"It happened."
Another pause.
Finally...
"Activate Phase Gray."
The call ended.
Neither man knew what Phase Gray meant.
But both understood one thing.
Someone much higher up had just become involved.
By late morning...
The plumbing van rolled slowly toward the abandoned Riverside Steel Yard.
Chain-link fences surrounded the property.
Warning signs read:
UNSAFE STRUCTURE
NO TRESPASSING
Rust covered everything.
Broken windows reflected the gray sky.
Nature had begun reclaiming the forgotten industrial complex.
Khloe stared through the windshield.
"This place feels..."
"Wrong," Eleanor finished.
"It should."
Harrison parked two blocks away.
"No phones from this point."
Everyone powered their devices off.
Then removed the batteries from the encrypted phones.
Khloe looked surprised.
"You think they can track even those?"
Harrison nodded.
"I never assume they can't."
Warehouse C stood at the far end of the property.
Its steel doors hung partially open.
Fresh tire tracks crossed the muddy ground.
Eleanor crouched.
"These weren't here long."
"How recent?"
She touched the damp earth.
"Less than twelve hours."
"So we're not first."
Inside...
The warehouse echoed with every footstep.
Old machinery sat beneath dusty tarps.
Broken chains swayed gently overhead.
The employee locker room entrance remained intact.
A faded sign still read:
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY
The staircase descended into darkness.
Khloe instinctively rested one hand on her stomach.
Her daughter kicked.
Almost as if sensing danger.
Harrison noticed.
"We don't have to do this."
Khloe met his eyes.
"If Richard's willing to kill our child..."
She straightened her shoulders.
"I need to know why."
The basement smelled of mold and rust.
Rows of dented metal lockers stretched across the room.
Most doors had already rusted open.
Some had fallen completely off their hinges.
At the far end...
Locker 217 remained closed.
Unlike the others...
Its paint looked newer.
Eleanor immediately stopped walking.
"Back."
Harrison didn't question her.
Everyone retreated several steps.
She studied the floor carefully.
Dust covered almost every surface.
Except...
A narrow strip directly in front of Locker 217.
Someone had walked there recently.
She pulled a small flashlight from her pocket.
Swept the beam across the concrete.
A nearly invisible wire caught the light.
Tripwire.
Connected beneath the locker.
Khloe's face turned pale.
"Oh my God..."
Eleanor crouched lower.
"No."
"There are two."
A second wire disappeared into the wall.
Professional work.
Designed to kill.
Harrison slowly exhaled.
"The phone call saved us."
Eleanor nodded.
"But someone expected us anyway."
She carefully traced the second wire.
It disappeared behind loose bricks.
Removing one brick revealed...
Not explosives.
A tiny wireless transmitter.
Motion activated.
The moment anyone opened Locker 217...
Someone elsewhere would receive an alert.
"They don't just want to kill us," Harrison said.
"They want to know exactly when we arrive."
Without touching the locker, Eleanor followed the wire along the wall.
It ended beneath an old electrical panel.
Hidden behind it...
A narrow crawl space.
Barely large enough for one person.
Cold air drifted through the opening.
Harrison aimed his flashlight inside.
Something glinted.
Metal.
Not machinery.
A small fireproof document case.
No traps.
No wires.
Someone had hidden it where no one would think to look.
Not inside Locker 217...
But behind it.
Khloe whispered,
"Michael Donnelly knew..."
"He expected the locker would be searched," Harrison replied.
"So he hid the real evidence somewhere safer."
The document case required a key.
Fortunately...
The lock had rusted beyond repair.
Eleanor used a pry bar from the van.
After several tense minutes...
The lid popped open.
Inside lay:
A leather notebook.
Three undeveloped rolls of film.
A sealed envelope.
And...
A VHS cassette labeled:
Riverside Inspection
Harrison carefully opened the notebook.
Every page contained handwritten inspection notes.
Dates.
Measurements.
Safety violations.
Then...
One page stopped him cold.
Across the top:
Meeting with Charles Harrington and Richard Harrington.
Date:
Twenty-two years earlier.
Richard had been only twenty-six.
Already attending high-level construction meetings with his father.
Beneath the heading...
Michael Donnelly had written one sentence.
Richard said, "If one building falls, we'll build ten more." Charles laughed.
No one spoke.
Khloe slowly sat down on an old bench.
She suddenly remembered Richard saying those exact words years later after losing a luxury hotel project.
She had laughed.
She thought it was ambition.
Now she realized...
It was inheritance.
Then Harrison opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was only one photograph.
A group of executives standing beside a groundbreaking ceremony.
Charles Harrington.
Arthur Sinclair.
Victor Salazar.
Richard.
And...
One face none of them expected.
Harrison stared silently.
Khloe leaned closer.
"Who is that?"
Eleanor's expression hardened.
"I know him."
"From where?"
She swallowed.
"He wasn't an engineer."
"He wasn't an investor."
"He wasn't even in construction."
She looked directly at Harrison.
"He was my supervising FBI agent."
Silence.
A heavy...
Dangerous silence.
Harrison slowly turned the photograph over.
On the back, written in faded blue ink, were six words:
Never trust the man smiling.
Just then...
A faint metallic click echoed somewhere above them.
Eleanor's head snapped upward.
"Move!"
An instant later...
May you like
The warehouse lights exploded into darkness.
