Chapter 8: The Ghost of Gabriel

The words refused to leave Julian's mind.
"Gabriel... is still alive."
For three days after Martha collapsed, he barely slept.
Doctors managed to stabilize her, but she remained unconscious once again, surrounded by machines that breathed and beeped in place of conversation.
Every answer Julian needed had disappeared behind another hospital curtain.
But this time, he wasn't willing to wait.
If Gabriel was alive...
Then somewhere in the world, there had to be proof.
Julian transformed the study inside the Hale mansion into a private investigation room.
The walls were soon covered with photographs, timelines, maps, and copies of every document he had collected since opening the Second Door.
One board focused entirely on Project Winter.
Another centered on Gabriel.
A third displayed Bianca's mysterious past.
Red strings connected names that should never have crossed paths.
Project Winter.
Elias Hale.
Gabriel.
Bianca.
The anonymous stranger.
Even Martha.
The deeper Julian looked, the more impossible it became to separate one mystery from another.
Every road eventually led back to the same place.
Project Winter.
By the fourth morning, Julian realized traditional investigators would never penetrate whatever remained of the project.
He needed someone else.
Someone who specialized in digital ghosts.
That evening he drove alone to an abandoned warehouse overlooking the harbor.
It served as the office of Lena Mercer.
Officially, she ran a cybersecurity consulting company.
Unofficially, governments had hired her to recover data from systems they considered permanently destroyed.
She greeted Julian without looking up from her monitors.
"I wondered how long it would take."
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"You expected me?"
Lena smirked.
"No billionaire visits me for computer repairs."
She finally looked at him.
"You've found something you weren't supposed to."
Julian placed an encrypted hard drive onto her desk.
"I need this opened."
She examined the drive.
"No manufacturer."
"No serial number."
"No operating system."
Her expression slowly changed.
"...Where did you get this?"
"I can't tell you."
Lena sighed.
"That usually means I'll regret saying yes."
"You probably will."
The hard drive had been hidden inside one of the Project Winter archive cabinets.
Its encryption wasn't military.
It wasn't commercial.
It was something far stranger.
Algorithms seemed to rewrite themselves every few seconds.
Lena stared at the screen for nearly an hour.
"I've never seen code behave like this."
"Can you break it?"
"I don't know."
She smiled faintly.
"Which means I'm interested."
Thirty-six hours later...
Julian returned.
Lena hadn't left the office.
Empty coffee cups covered every desk.
Code scrolled endlessly across six monitors.
She looked exhausted.
"I got in."
Julian stepped closer.
"What did you find?"
"Not much."
"But enough."
She opened a folder labeled:
PROJECT WINTER
Thousands of files had been destroyed years earlier.
Entire databases were missing.
Directories had been intentionally corrupted.
Someone had erased almost everything.
Almost.
Fragments remained.
Tiny pieces of conversations.
Financial records.
Internal memos.
Security logs.
Like ashes left after a fire.
Julian opened one recovered report.
SUBJECT: ASSET PROTECTION
The document listed dates.
Locations.
No names.
Only identification numbers.
"What am I looking at?"
Lena zoomed in.
"Someone repeatedly intervened to protect one individual."
Julian frowned.
"How?"
"The records don't explain."
"They only document outcomes."
She clicked the first entry.
October 14
Vehicle collision prevented.
Julian froze.
"I remember that."
Five years earlier, a truck had lost control on an icy bridge.
Seconds before impact, an anonymous emergency call reported brake failure.
Police stopped traffic.
Julian's car never reached the bridge.
Authorities had never identified the caller.
He always assumed it was luck.
Second entry.
March 3
Financial transfer executed.
Julian immediately recognized the date.
The Hale Corporation had nearly lost control of an important acquisition after an unexpected banking freeze.
Hours before the deadline, anonymous investors quietly purchased enough shares to stabilize the company.
The money disappeared afterward.
Nobody claimed responsibility.
The board called it a miracle.
Third entry.
August 29
Security breach neutralized.
Julian remembered that one too.
Armed intruders had attempted to enter one of the family's private residences.
Before security even detected them, local police mysteriously arrived.
Someone had anonymously reported the exact location, number of attackers, and their weapons.
Every criminal was arrested before reaching the house.
The caller had never been identified.
Julian slowly looked up.
"These aren't coincidences."
Lena nodded.
"There are dozens more."
Car accidents avoided.
Business sabotage prevented.
Kidnapping attempts interrupted.
Stock market manipulations exposed.
Anonymous legal warnings.
Hidden surveillance devices discovered.
Each event shared one detail.
Someone had quietly intervened...
Then disappeared.
Never asking for credit.
Never revealing a name.
Julian studied another recovered file.
Only one sentence remained intact.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: PROTECT SUBJECT J.H.
J.H.
Julian Hale.
His pulse quickened.
Someone had been watching him.
Not to harm him.
To save him.
Again.
And again.
And again.
For years.
"Can you identify whoever accessed these systems?"
Lena continued typing.
"There's one user."
"No name."
"No photograph."
"No IP address."
"Only a codename."
She enlarged the screen.
G-17
Julian's breathing stopped.
"G."
Gabriel.
The possibility struck him instantly.
Project Winter.
An adopted child.
A survivor.
Someone who understood Hale secrets.
Someone capable of disappearing.
Someone who had every reason to remain invisible while protecting him.
Julian whispered,
"It's him."
Lena looked puzzled.
"You know this person?"
"I think..."
"My brother."
For the first time in years, Julian allowed himself to remember Gabriel.
Not the funeral.
Not the grief.
But the boy himself.
Gabriel had always appeared whenever Julian found trouble.
If Julian fell from a tree, Gabriel caught him.
If bullies surrounded him at school, Gabriel somehow appeared first.
If Julian got lost during family trips...
Gabriel always found him.
He had spent his entire childhood protecting Julian.
Why would adulthood be different?
Unless...
He never stopped.
Julian drove home before sunrise.
Every traffic light.
Every passing stranger.
Every parked vehicle.
He suddenly wondered how many times Gabriel had stood nearby without revealing himself.
Had they crossed paths?
Shared elevators?
Walked the same streets?
Sat in neighboring restaurants?
Watching.
Waiting.
Protecting.
Remaining nothing more than another face in the crowd.
The thought was strangely comforting.
And terrifying.
As Julian entered the mansion, Bianca greeted him in the entrance hall.
"You've been gone all night."
He smiled faintly.
"Work."
She studied his face.
"You found something."
Julian hesitated.
"Maybe."
She stepped closer.
"If you're carrying everything alone..."
"You don't have to."
Her concern felt genuine.
Yet Martha's warning.
The archive.
The hidden photograph.
Everything urged caution.
Julian kissed her forehead.
"I'll tell you when I can."
She nodded without arguing.
But as she walked away...
He couldn't shake the feeling that she already knew far more than she admitted.
Late that evening, Julian sat alone in his study.
The room was silent except for the ticking grandfather clock.
Then his private phone rang.
Not his business line.
Not his personal number.
The secure satellite phone known only to three people.
Julian frowned.
No caller ID.
He answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Several seconds passed.
Only faint static filled the line.
Then...
A calm male voice spoke.
Low.
Controlled.
Unmistakably familiar.
Older.
But hauntingly recognizable.
Julian's heart stopped.
He had heard that voice countless times during childhood.
A voice he believed had been buried years ago.
"Julian."
He couldn't breathe.
"...Gabriel?"
The man ignored the question.
His tone remained steady.
Almost gentle.
As if speaking to a younger brother he had never truly left behind.
"You don't have much time."
Julian gripped the phone tighter.
"Where are you?"
Another pause.
Then the voice delivered six words that shattered everything Martha had confessed.
"Don't trust your mother."
The line went dead.
Julian remained frozen in the darkness.
May you like
If that voice truly belonged to Gabriel...
Then the greatest lie in the Hale family had not yet been told.
