Chapter 13: The Hunt

The first sign that something was wrong...

was the silence.

The Hale mansion had never truly been quiet.

Even at midnight, there were always sounds.

Security cameras adjusting.

Guards walking patrol routes.

The old wooden floors creaking beneath decades of history.

The endless hum of technology hidden behind ancient walls.

But that night...

Everything stopped.

Julian noticed it immediately.

He stood in the hallway outside the library, staring at the lights above him.

One second.

Two seconds.

Then every lamp in the mansion went dark.

The entire estate disappeared into blackness.

Emergency lights should have activated.

They didn't.

Security systems should have switched to backup power.

They didn't.

The mansion's automated defenses should have locked every entrance.

Instead...

Every door opened.

Julian's phone vibrated.

A security alert appeared.

Then another.

Then dozens.

SYSTEM FAILURE.

ACCESS DENIED.

EXTERNAL CONTROL DETECTED.

His expression hardened.

Someone wasn't attacking the mansion.

Someone had taken control of it.

Bianca appeared at the end of the hallway holding a flashlight.

Her face was pale.

"They found us."

Julian looked at her.

"How long?"

"Not long."

"Minutes."

The fear in her voice told him everything.

This wasn't a threat.

It was an execution.

"Where's Martha?"

"In her room."

Julian didn't hesitate.

They moved through the darkness together.

For once, he didn't question Bianca.

There was no time.

Martha was awake when they reached her.

The old woman looked toward the dead lights and immediately understood.

"They came."

Julian helped her sit up.

"Who?"

Martha gave a tired smile.

"The people I've spent my entire life running from."

Before Julian could ask more, a sound echoed from downstairs.

A door opening.

Then footsteps.

Many footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Professional.

Bianca looked toward the hallway.

"They're inside."

The Hale mansion had survived wars.

Financial attacks.

Political battles.

Enemies who tried to destroy the family from outside.

But Julian finally understood something.

The mansion was never built to keep enemies out.

It was built because the Hales always expected enemies to eventually get in.

Martha pointed toward an old painting on the wall.

"Behind it."

Julian moved the frame aside.

A hidden mechanism appeared.

He stared.

"Another secret?"

Martha nodded.

"The Hales have always had escape routes."

"Every generation added more."

"Your grandfather never trusted anyone completely."

She pressed the hidden button.

The wall slowly opened.

Behind it was a narrow stone passage.

The tunnel descended beneath the mansion.

Unlike the polished corridors above, this place was ancient.

The walls were made from rough stone.

The air smelled of dust and forgotten years.

Julian walked beside Martha while Bianca followed behind.

After several minutes, Julian finally spoke.

"You knew about the tunnels."

Martha nodded.

"I knew about many things."

"Too many."

"Not enough."

Julian looked at her.

"You lied to me."

Her expression tightened.

"Yes."

"But I was trying to keep you alive."

Before he could respond...

A sound echoed behind them.

Footsteps.

They had found the entrance.

Bianca immediately turned off her flashlight.

Everyone froze.

Darkness surrounded them.

Then came the sound of voices.

Masked operatives.

"Search every passage."

"The target cannot escape."

Julian recognized the tone.

These weren't ordinary criminals.

They moved like soldiers.

They knew the tunnels.

They knew the estate.

Someone had given them a map.

Someone inside Project Winter had prepared this attack long ago.

The chase began.

The three of them moved deeper into the underground passages.

Behind them, footsteps grew closer.

Bianca led the way.

She knew routes that even Martha didn't remember.

"How do you know this place?"

Julian asked.

She didn't turn.

"Because they trained me here."

That answer hurt.

This mansion wasn't just her target.

It was part of her training.

A gunshot exploded through the tunnel.

The bullet struck the wall beside Julian.

Stone shattered.

Martha nearly fell.

Bianca pulled them behind a corner.

"They're using thermal tracking."

Julian looked at her.

"Can we escape?"

She hesitated.

A moment too long.

"No."

Another gunshot.

Closer.

"Not without help."

Then the tunnel lights turned on.

Not the emergency lights.

Not the mansion system.

Someone had manually activated them.

A figure appeared at the end of the passage.

Tall.

Dark coat.

Face hidden in shadow.

For a second, Julian thought he was seeing another ghost.

Then the man stepped forward.

Julian forgot how to breathe.

The same eyes.

The same expression.

Older.

Changed.

But unmistakable.

"Gabriel."

The name escaped before Julian could stop it.

The man looked at him.

For a moment...

Neither moved.

Thirty years of questions existed between them.

Thirty years of grief.

Thirty years of believing the other was gone.

Then Gabriel spoke.

"You're taller."

Julian's eyes burned.

"You were alive."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"I told you I was."

There was no time for reunion.

The operatives appeared behind them.

Gabriel immediately moved.

He pulled a weapon from his jacket and fired.

The tunnel erupted with noise.

Julian watched in disbelief as the brother he had mourned for years fought beside him like no time had passed.

Gabriel knew every movement.

Every escape route.

Every weakness of the enemy.

Because he had spent years preparing for this moment.

"Move!"

Gabriel shouted.

They ran.

The tunnels became a battlefield.

Masked operatives chased them through the darkness.

Bullets struck stone.

Dust filled the air.

Julian wanted answers.

Wanted explanations.

But Gabriel kept pushing forward.

"Later."

"We talk later."

"You always said that."

Julian shouted.

Gabriel almost smiled.

"Some things never change."

They reached the final passage.

An old maintenance exit leading beyond the estate grounds.

Freedom was only steps away.

Then...

A single shot echoed.

Gabriel stopped.

Julian saw the impact.

The bullet had struck him.

"No!"

Gabriel stumbled.

Julian caught him before he fell.

The older man pushed him away.

"Go."

Julian refused.

"Not again."

Gabriel looked at him.

For the first time, Julian saw the pain behind his eyes.

"I spent my whole life making sure you survived."

"Don't make me fail now."

The operatives were approaching.

Bianca and Martha helped create distance.

Julian held Gabriel.

Blood stained his coat.

"You can't die."

Gabriel reached inside his jacket.

His hand emerged holding a small black flash drive.

The device had no label.

Only one symbol engraved on the surface.

A white circle.

Project Winter's symbol.

"Take this."

Julian grabbed it.

"What is it?"

Gabriel struggled to speak.

"The truth."

"All of it."

His eyes closed briefly.

"Everything they hid from you."

Julian shook him.

"Gabriel."

But his brother was already losing consciousness.

Before darkness took him, Gabriel whispered:

"Don't trust anyone..."

A pause.

"...not even me."

Then his body went limp.

Julian stood frozen in the underground passage.

The brother he had lost had returned.

Saved him.

And collapsed in his arms.

Leaving behind the one thing everyone had spent decades hiding.

A small encrypted flash drive.

The final piece of Project Winter.

Behind them, the enemy was still coming.

Ahead of them, the truth waited.

May you like

And for the first time...

Julian wondered if he truly wanted to know what was inside.
