Chapter 5: The Second Door

Julian didn't sleep.

Not after the old man's final words.

"The First Door remembers blood."

The sentence echoed through every silent hallway of the Hale estate like an invisible clock counting toward something inevitable.

At dawn, the police had finished collecting statements. The forensic team swept every corner of the underground bunker, photographing footprints, fingerprints, and the strange symbols carved into the steel walls.

But one thing bothered Julian more than anything else.

The blood.

The single crimson drop the stranger had left behind after cutting his palm.

Julian walked back into the bunker before sunrise.

The yellow evidence marker still sat exactly where the forensic officer had placed it.

But the blood...

...was gone.

He crouched.

The concrete floor was perfectly clean.

No smear.

No stain.

No chemical residue.

Nothing.

The detective beside him frowned.

"That's impossible."

Another officer ran a luminol test across the floor.

Blue light washed over the concrete.

Nothing reacted.

"It never existed," one technician whispered.

Julian stared without speaking.

He knew what he had seen.

The stranger had bled.

Everyone in the room had seen it.

Yet now reality itself seemed determined to erase the evidence.

By afternoon, the mansion had settled into an eerie silence.

Doctors insisted Martha rest.

Security guards doubled their patrols.

Lawyers arrived to discuss inheritance concerns.

Julian ignored all of them.

Instead, he locked himself inside his grandfather's study.

The brass key rested in the center of the desk.

It looked ordinary.

About six inches long.

Old enough that parts of it had darkened with age.

Yet unlike normal brass, its surface carried tiny engraved lines so fine they almost resembled fingerprints.

Julian ran his thumb across them.

Click.

A tiny compartment inside the key shifted.

A folded strip of paper slid into his hand.

Only four words were written on it.

SECOND DOOR. BELOW WATER.

Julian's heartbeat quickened.

Below water.

Not below the mansion.

Below...

the underground reservoir.

The Hale estate had been built almost one hundred and fifty years earlier.

Few people knew an enormous freshwater cistern lay beneath the original foundation.

Its purpose had supposedly been emergency water storage during wars.

Julian had never visited it.

According to old architectural drawings, the reservoir connected to forgotten maintenance tunnels abandoned decades ago.

He grabbed a flashlight.

The brass key.

A pistol.

Then descended alone.

The lower tunnels smelled of damp stone and rust.

Water dripped rhythmically from the ceiling.

The deeper he walked, the colder the air became.

Eventually the corridor opened into a vast underground chamber.

The reservoir stretched across the darkness like a black mirror.

Concrete pillars disappeared into still water.

The flashlight barely reached the opposite wall.

Julian examined the room carefully.

Nothing.

Just ancient machinery.

Pipes.

Corroded valves.

Then he remembered the note.

Below water.

He circled the edge until something caught his attention.

One iron ladder descended directly into the reservoir.

Not floating.

Submerged.

He hesitated only a moment before climbing down.

The freezing water rose to his knees...

Then waist...

Then chest.

His flashlight illuminated the stone wall beneath the surface.

There.

A bronze plate hidden underwater.

The outline of another door.

Only the keyhole remained above the waterline.

Julian inserted the brass key.

It fit perfectly.

For several seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then—

CLUNK.

Somewhere deep inside the walls, ancient gears awakened.

The entire chamber vibrated.

Water churned violently.

The stone door slowly slid sideways with a grinding roar that hadn't been heard for decades.

A narrow passage waited beyond.

The tunnel sloped downward.

Surprisingly dry.

Electric lights flickered on automatically as Julian entered, as though sensors still functioned after generations.

At the end stood another steel vault.

Unlike the first, no symbols decorated it.

Only two words engraved across its surface.

SECOND DOOR

Julian pushed.

The vault opened effortlessly.

He expected gold.

Diamonds.

Hidden fortunes.

Instead...

He stopped breathing.

Rows.

Thousands of rows.

Towering shelves stretched into darkness.

Every shelf overflowed with carefully preserved files.

Leather-bound ledgers.

Locked document boxes.

Photographs.

Audio tapes.

Hard drives.

Newer cabinets held encrypted servers humming quietly.

It wasn't a vault.

It was an archive.

A gigantic archive.

Julian stepped forward slowly.

Every shelf carried a family name.

ROTHWELL

ASHFORD

KENSINGTON

MORETTI

VARGAS

CHEN

AL-HADID

Families worth billions.

Political dynasties.

Royal bloodlines.

Corporate empires.

People powerful enough to influence governments.

Every one of them had an entire section dedicated to their lives.

He pulled one folder at random.

Inside were decades of financial records.

Private letters.

Medical reports.

Hidden business agreements.

DNA analyses.

Secret affairs.

Bribery evidence.

Scandals never reported.

Confessions.

Everything.

Enough information to destroy reputations...

Collapse governments...

Or force almost anyone into obedience.

Julian slowly looked around the endless archive.

His grandfather had lied.

The Hale fortune had never depended on money.

Money could disappear.

Markets crashed.

Empires fell.

But secrets...

Secrets became more valuable every year.

The Hale family had survived for generations because they possessed something no billionaire could buy.

Knowledge.

Leverage.

Control.

Every major family believed they held power.

In reality...

Someone had quietly collected every weakness they possessed.

Someone named Hale.

Near the center of the archive stood a massive oak table.

On top rested a leather ledger.

Julian opened it carefully.

The handwriting belonged to his grandfather.

"Gold invites thieves."

"Information creates kings."

"A fortune protects one generation."

"Secrets protect them all."

Julian turned another page.

"Never threaten powerful people."

"Simply let them know you already know."

Another page.

"If the archive is opened..."

He paused.

The sentence stopped abruptly.

The remaining pages had been torn out.

Hours passed as Julian searched.

He wasn't looking for strangers anymore.

He wanted answers about himself.

About his parents.

About why someone wanted Martha dead.

Then...

His eyes froze.

One shelf.

One black binder.

One name embossed in silver letters.

BIANCA LAURENT

His pulse accelerated.

Why would Bianca have her own file?

She wasn't from an ancient dynasty.

She hadn't inherited billions.

She was...

She was simply Bianca.

The woman he believed had entered his life by chance.

Hands trembling, Julian carried the binder to the table.

It was heavier than expected.

He opened the cover.

The first document made his stomach tighten.

SUBJECT: BIANCA LAURENT

Age: 8

Eight?

Julian frowned.

The file began nearly twenty years ago.

Long before university.

Long before business school.

Long before they met.

Inside were annual reports.

School photographs.

Medical records.

Travel histories.

Psychological evaluations.

Newspaper clippings.

Every birthday.

Every school transfer.

Every competition.

Every friend.

Someone had watched Bianca almost her entire life.

Not occasionally.

Constantly.

Julian turned pages faster.

Age twelve.

Age fifteen.

Age seventeen.

College.

Internship.

Every step documented with terrifying precision.

None of it made sense.

Why would the Hale family monitor an ordinary girl for decades?

Unless...

She had never been ordinary.

His hands shook harder as he reached the final section.

The papers became recent.

Only months old.

Then weeks.

The last page wasn't typed.

It contained only a single glossy photograph.

Julian stared.

His blood ran cold.

The image showed Bianca walking through the front gates of the Hale mansion.

Smiling.

Confident.

Looking directly toward the entrance.

The timestamp in the corner froze his heart.

Eight months earlier.

Eight months before their "first" meeting.

Before the charity gala.

Before the introductions.

Before the carefully orchestrated coincidence that had changed both their lives.

Someone had photographed Bianca entering the Hale estate...

When Julian had never even known she existed.

At the bottom of the photograph, someone had written a single sentence in elegant black ink.

"Phase One completed. Await further instructions."

Julian slowly lowered the page.

May you like

For the first time since his mother's attempted murder...

He wondered whether meeting Bianca had ever been an accident at all.
