Chapter 2: The Locked Study

The ambulance disappeared through the mansion gates, its siren fading into the night.
Julian stood motionless beneath the entrance archway.
His soaked dress shirt clung to his skin, but he barely noticed.
His eyes remained fixed on Bianca.
She looked shaken.
Not devastated.
Not guilty.
Calculating.
That frightened him more than tears ever could.
The head of security approached.
"Sir... the surveillance recordings."
Julian held out his hand.
A black hard drive was placed in his palm.
"Everyone leaves," Julian said.
Silence followed.
Even the servants exchanged uncertain glances.
"What about Miss Laurent?" one of them asked.
Julian didn't answer immediately.
He looked directly at Bianca.
"For tonight..."
"She stays."
Relief flashed across Bianca's face.
Too quickly.
Julian noticed.
She thought she had survived.
She was wrong.
Ten minutes later...
The mansion felt strangely empty.
Only the grandfather clock echoed through the enormous halls.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Bianca stood near the fireplace holding a cup of untouched tea.
"Julian..."
"I know what this looks like."
"It looks exactly like what I saw."
"You don't understand."
"Then help me."
She took a slow breath.
"Your mother slipped."
"I tried to pull her up."
"The cameras will prove it."
Julian almost smiled.
"The cameras?"
She froze.
Only for half a second.
Enough.
"You remembered the cameras before I mentioned them."
Her fingers tightened around the porcelain cup.
A tiny crack appeared.
Julian walked toward the study.
"The footage will answer everything."
Bianca's heartbeat quickened.
She knew three cameras had been disabled.
She also knew there was one she had never managed to find.
If that hidden camera existed...
Everything was over.
The Hale family study occupied the entire third floor.
Solid oak doors.
Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Original paintings worth millions.
Only three people possessed keys.
Julian.
His mother.
His late father.
Julian slid the old brass key into the lock.
Nothing.
He frowned.
The lock had changed.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Impossible.
"This room hasn't been opened since my father died," he murmured.
Bianca forced a laugh.
"Maybe your mother changed the lock."
Julian didn't answer.
Instead, he called the estate manager.
"Who replaced the study lock?"
The elderly manager looked confused.
"No one, sir."
"The key doesn't work."
"It should."
"It doesn't."
The old man's face slowly lost its color.
"I... I swear..."
Julian pushed the door with his shoulder.
It didn't move.
Someone had locked it.
From the inside.
Every servant gathered in the hallway.
No one spoke.
Julian's voice became sharp.
"Break it."
Two guards slammed into the heavy oak door.
Once.
Twice.
The third impact shattered the lock.
The door burst inward.
Darkness.
A cold draft drifted through the room.
Julian stepped inside.
His footsteps echoed across polished wood.
Everything appeared untouched.
His father's desk.
The leather chair.
Crystal decanters.
Shelves filled with antique books.
Then...
Something caught his attention.
The window.
It was open.
Rain blew gently through the curtains.
Someone had been here.
Recently.
Very recently.
"Search everything."
The guards spread through the room.
One checked the fireplace.
Another inspected the walls.
A third searched beneath the desk.
Nothing.
Bianca slowly relaxed.
Perhaps whoever entered had taken whatever mattered.
Then...
"Sir!"
A young guard knelt beside the desk.
"There are footprints."
Wet footprints.
Bare feet.
They began near the window.
Ended...
In front of the massive bookshelf.
Then disappeared.
As if the person had walked into solid wood.
Julian stared.
"There has to be another room."
The estate manager shook his head.
"There isn't."
"My grandfather built this mansion."
"I know every blueprint."
Julian walked toward the bookshelf.
Running his fingers across hundreds of old books.
History.
Law.
Finance.
Medicine.
One title looked newer than the others.
The Art of Silence.
He pulled it.
Click.
A mechanical sound echoed.
The bookshelf slowly slid sideways.
Everyone stopped breathing.
Behind it...
A narrow stone staircase descended into darkness.
Cold air rose from below.
Along with something else.
The unmistakable scent of antiseptic.
Hospitals.
Medicine.
Or...
A laboratory.
Julian grabbed a flashlight.
"I'm going down."
"I'm coming with you," Bianca said immediately.
"No."
She smiled weakly.
"I just want to help."
Julian looked at her for several seconds.
Then nodded.
"Fine."
The staircase spiraled deep beneath the mansion.
The deeper they walked...
The colder it became.
Concrete replaced polished wood.
Metal pipes lined the walls.
This wasn't part of the original mansion.
Someone had built it later.
At great expense.
Finally...
The stairs ended.
A steel door stood before them.
It was slightly open.
Julian pushed it.
The hinges groaned.
Inside...
Rows of filing cabinets stretched across the underground room.
Computer monitors.
Medical equipment.
Locked refrigerators.
And dozens of cardboard archive boxes.
Every label carried the same name.
HALE FOUNDATION
Bianca's breathing became uneven.
She had never seen this place before.
Neither had Julian.
His father had hidden an entire facility beneath the estate.
Why?
The answer came almost immediately.
Pinned to the far wall was a giant board covered with photographs.
Hundreds of photographs.
Every member of the Hale family.
Every employee.
Every lawyer.
Every doctor.
Connected by red strings.
Like evidence in a criminal investigation.
At the center...
One photograph stood larger than all the others.
Julian's.
Someone had circled his face with thick black ink.
Underneath were four handwritten words.
HE MUST NEVER KNOW.
Julian felt a chill crawl down his spine.
"What is this?"
No one answered.
Then...
A computer monitor flickered to life by itself.
Static filled the room.
A recorded video began to play.
The screen showed an older man sitting behind the same desk upstairs.
Julian's father.
Dead for twelve years.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"It means I failed."
Julian took one stunned step forward.
His father's eyes seemed almost alive.
"There is something about our family..."
"...that I never wanted you to discover."
The video suddenly glitched.
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the underground chamber.
Then came the sound.
Not from the speakers.
From somewhere deeper inside the bunker.
A child laughed.
One soft laugh.
Then another.
Julian slowly turned his flashlight toward the corridor beyond the archives.
Tiny wet footprints crossed the concrete floor.
Fresh.
Someone...
May you like
Or something...
Had just walked past them.
