Chapter 10: Project Winter

The library had never felt so empty.

Even after the broken window was repaired, Julian could still hear the sound.

The gunshot.

The final breath of Edmund Vale.

The realization that someone inside the Hale estate had tried to silence him forever.

For thirty years, Edmund had protected the Hale family.

And in the end, he died protecting a secret.

A secret Julian was now closer than ever to uncovering.

On the table before him sat the recovered fragments of Project Winter.

The same files that had haunted his family for decades.

The same project connected to Gabriel.

To Bianca.

To his missing memories.

Julian stared at the encrypted database.

This time, he wouldn't stop until every hidden page was open.

Lena Mercer arrived at the mansion just after midnight.

She carried three laptops and a small device wrapped in protective casing.

"You realize most people invite friends over for dinner."

Julian didn't smile.

"Most people don't have dead butlers and erased childhood memories."

Lena placed the equipment down.

"Fair point."

She connected the final drive.

The system immediately responded.

Thousands of encrypted files appeared.

Different from before.

Not damaged.

Not incomplete.

Waiting.

Julian looked at the screen.

"How?"

Lena studied the code.

"Someone didn't destroy the archive."

"They buried it."

"There's a difference."

"What difference?"

"Destroying something means you don't want anyone to find it."

She pointed at the files.

"Buried means someone might need it again."

Julian felt a chill.

Someone had preserved Project Winter.

For a reason.

The decryption process began.

For hours, they watched fragments rebuild themselves.

Documents appeared.

Photographs loaded.

Audio files restored.

Then a title appeared.

PROJECT WINTER

CLASSIFICATION: IDENTITY PRESERVATION INITIATIVE

Julian frowned.

"Identity preservation?"

Lena opened the first document.

The explanation was nothing like what Julian expected.

Project Winter wasn't created for war.

It wasn't a weapon.

It wasn't a government assassination program.

It was something far more complicated.

And far more disturbing.

The official purpose:

Protect individuals whose lives were at extreme risk.

Witnesses.

Corporate leaders.

Political figures.

Scientists.

People who possessed information powerful enough to make them targets.

But unlike normal witness protection programs...

Project Winter went further.

Much further.

It didn't simply hide people.

It rebuilt them.

New identities.

New histories.

New family records.

New education backgrounds.

Complete digital footprints.

Every detail of a person's existence could be rewritten.

A person could disappear...

Then return as someone completely different.

Julian slowly read the files.

"They created new lives."

Lena nodded.

"Not fake documents."

"Entire realities."

A section titled MEMORY MANAGEMENT appeared.

Julian's expression changed.

Selective memory suppression.

The program used experimental neurological techniques to remove specific traumatic memories.

Not all memories.

Only targeted ones.

The goal was simple.

A person couldn't reveal information they no longer remembered.

Lena looked at him.

"Julian..."

He didn't answer.

He already understood.

Project Winter wasn't just about protecting identities.

It was about controlling them.

A person could be saved from enemies...

But also controlled by the people who saved them.

Another document opened.

Founder records.

Names appeared.

Several were blacked out.

Several were unfamiliar.

Then one name remained visible.

ELIAS HALE

Julian stared.

His grandfather wasn't just connected to Project Winter.

He created it.

The man who built the Hale empire had also built a system capable of rewriting human lives.

A system capable of making people disappear.

A system capable of changing reality itself.

"How many people?"

Julian whispered.

Lena scrolled.

"Thousands of files."

"But only a small percentage were completed cases."

"Most were abandoned."

Julian continued reading.

"Who were the participants?"

Lena searched the database.

A list appeared.

Names.

Dates.

Case numbers.

Then suddenly...

One name appeared.

Julian stopped breathing.

PARTICIPANT: BIANCA LAURENT

His hand froze above the keyboard.

"No."

Lena looked at him.

"You know her."

Julian didn't respond.

The screen displayed Bianca's information.

Original identity:

Unknown.

Current identity:

Bianca Laurent.

Status:

Active.

Julian felt his stomach tighten.

Active.

Not completed.

Not archived.

Active.

"What does that mean?"

Lena continued reading.

"It means someone is still managing her case."

Julian stepped away from the desk.

The woman he loved.

The woman he planned to marry.

The woman who had comforted him while he searched for answers...

Was part of the same program that destroyed his memories.

Then another file appeared.

No name.

No photograph.

Only a code.

WINTER-001

Julian stared.

"The first subject."

Lena clicked.

The file opened slowly.

Most information remained hidden.

But one sentence was visible.

FIRST SUCCESSFUL MEMORY ADAPTATION SUBJECT

Date:

Twenty years earlier.

Location:

Hale private facility.

Julian felt the room become colder.

"Twenty years ago..."

His childhood.

The time when he supposedly wandered into the old laboratory with Gabriel.

The time when his memories disappeared.

Lena looked at him.

"Julian."

He didn't hear her.

Because beneath the subject code...

Another line appeared.

IDENTITY: JULIAN HALE

For several seconds, there was no sound.

No breathing.

No movement.

Nothing.

The screen continued displaying the truth.

Julian wasn't simply connected to Project Winter.

He wasn't just a witness.

He wasn't just someone affected by it.

He was the beginning.

The first experiment.

The first successful case.

The person who proved the impossible could be done.

His childhood had not been protected.

It had been rewritten.

Julian stumbled backward.

Images flashed through his mind.

The snow-covered facility.

The alarms.

The frightened children.

Gabriel pulling him away.

A voice saying:

"He can't remember this."

Another voice responding:

"Then make sure he doesn't."

Julian grabbed his head.

Pain exploded behind his eyes.

Lena immediately stood.

"Julian!"

But he barely heard her.

A forgotten memory pushed against the locked doors inside his mind.

A memory that had waited decades.

On the screen, one final recovered document appeared.

It contained a handwritten note.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Elias Hale.

Julian read it slowly.

"Subject One has exceeded expectations."

"Memory suppression successful."

"Emotional attachment preserved."

"The child will grow normally."

Then the final sentence:

"He must never know that he was the first."

Julian stared.

The truth finally revealed itself.

His grandfather hadn't hidden Project Winter from him.

He had hidden Julian from Project Winter.

Because Julian wasn't someone they experimented on.

Julian was the experiment.

A notification suddenly appeared.

A new file had unlocked automatically.

Lena frowned.

"I didn't open that."

Julian looked at the screen.

The file name appeared.

WINTER-001 FINAL OBSERVER REPORT

Created:

Two days ago.

Someone had accessed it recently.

Someone who knew Julian had found the archive.

The document opened.

Only one sentence filled the page.

"The subject has regained awareness."

Below it was another line.

"Begin Phase Two."

Julian stared at the words.

Then he understood.

The entire investigation.

The attacks.

The secrets.

The revelations.

They weren't accidents.

Someone had been waiting for him to remember.

May you like

And now that he had...

The real experiment was beginning.
