Chapter 1: The Woman in the Pool

The first thing Julian Hale heard when he stepped into his mansion was his mother's scream.

Not crying.

Not calling for help.

A scream so raw it seemed to slice through the marble halls.

He stopped walking.

The bouquet of rare crimson roses slipped from his hand, scattering across the polished floor like drops of fresh blood.

For one impossible second, the entire world fell silent.

Then came the splash.

Julian turned toward the backyard.

The infinity pool stretched beneath the evening sky, its still blue surface broken by frantic waves.

His seventy-eight-year-old mother fought to stay alive.

Martha Hale's silver hair floated around her face. Her thin hands clawed desperately at the edge of the pool, every breath becoming weaker than the last.

"Please..." she gasped.

"Help me..."

Standing above her was Bianca Laurent.

The woman Julian intended to marry in less than three weeks.

She wasn't panicking.

She wasn't reaching out.

She was watching.

Watching with the calm expression of someone waiting for a clock to finish counting down.

"Still pretending you're helpless?" Bianca asked coldly.

Martha coughed violently.

Water filled her mouth before she could answer.

"I... can't swim..."

Bianca laughed.

"You've used that excuse your entire life."

"It's not an excuse..."

"It is."

Martha reached higher, fingers barely touching the marble edge.

"Please..."

For one heartbeat, it looked as if Bianca might help.

Instead...

She lifted one designer heel.

Pressed it onto Martha's trembling fingers.

And slowly forced them away from the ledge.

Martha screamed.

Her body disappeared beneath the water.

Julian's fists tightened until his knuckles turned white.

Every instinct told him to run.

To throw Bianca aside.

To save his mother.

But another instinct...

One built through years of leading Hale Global...

Told him to wait.

Only for a moment.

People revealed their true faces when they believed no one was watching.

Bianca leaned over the water.

"You actually think Julian would choose you over me?"

Martha resurfaced, coughing violently.

"He's... my son..."

"He loves me."

Bianca smiled.

"A son grows up."

"A wife stays."

She crouched beside the pool.

"When we're married, everything becomes mine."

"The mansion."

"The company."

"The trust."

"The foundation."

"And eventually..."

She gently brushed a strand of hair away from Martha's forehead.

"...your bedroom."

Martha stared at her.

"You don't love him."

Bianca's smile widened.

"I never said I did."

Julian's heartbeat slowed.

Not from relief.

From rage.

Ice-cold rage.

Bianca continued speaking, almost proudly.

"It wasn't difficult."

"I only had to convince everyone that you're losing your memory."

Martha's eyes widened.

"You..."

"Doctors."

"Nurses."

"The house staff."

"They all think you're confused."

She shrugged.

"A few carefully chosen stories."

"A few forgotten pills."

"A few staged incidents."

"And suddenly..."

She snapped her fingers.

"...everyone believes the old woman is losing her mind."

Julian felt the blood drain from his face.

Three months.

For three months his mother had insisted someone was moving her medicine.

She had claimed documents disappeared.

Jewelry had gone missing.

She said Bianca entered her room every night.

Julian hadn't believed her.

He had blamed dementia.

God...

What had he done?

Bianca stood.

Smoothed invisible wrinkles from her expensive white dress.

"You know what's funny?"

She looked directly into Martha's frightened eyes.

"You made this easy."

"You trusted everyone."

"You believed your son would protect you."

"But powerful men never notice what's happening inside their own homes."

Julian remembered every argument.

Every time he had told his mother to stop imagining things.

Every disappointed look in her eyes.

Every tear.

He had failed her.

Again.

Martha whispered,

"Julian will find out."

Bianca laughed.

"No."

"He won't."

"He already chose me."

Her voice became softer.

Almost affectionate.

"The wedding gifts are arriving."

"The guest list is finished."

"The lawyers have prepared the prenuptial agreement."

"Within a month..."

She leaned close enough that only Martha could hear.

"...you'll be dead."

Julian heard every word.

His vision blurred.

Not from fear.

From fury.

Then Bianca spoke the sentence that shattered everything.

"I've already planned your funeral."

Silence.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

Julian stepped out from the shadows.

His shoes echoed across the stone patio.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Bianca slowly turned.

The color drained from her face.

The confident smile vanished instantly.

"J... Julian..."

His expression revealed nothing.

No anger.

No shock.

No emotion at all.

He looked at Bianca.

Then at his struggling mother.

Then back at Bianca.

His voice was quiet.

Almost gentle.

"Go ahead."

She blinked.

"I..."

"Repeat what you just said."

Bianca forced a laugh.

"I don't know what you mean."

Julian didn't answer.

Instead...

He took off his suit jacket.

Walked past Bianca.

And jumped into the pool.

Cold water exploded upward.

Within seconds he reached Martha.

She collapsed against him, barely conscious.

"It's okay," he whispered.

"I've got you."

She looked into his eyes.

For the first time in months...

She believed him.

Julian lifted her from the water with surprising ease despite her soaked clothes.

Housekeepers rushed outside.

Security guards followed.

Everyone froze.

No one had ever seen Martha in such condition.

Julian wrapped his jacket around his mother.

"Call an ambulance."

No one moved.

"I said..."

His voice became thunder.

"NOW!"

The staff scattered.

Bianca hurried forward.

"Julian, let me explain..."

He raised one finger.

She stopped instantly.

For the first time since they'd met...

She saw something she'd never imagined.

Fear wasn't in Julian's eyes.

Mercy was gone.

He looked at her the way a judge looks at someone already convicted.

"Did you touch her?"

"What?"

"My mother."

"I..."

"I asked one question."

Bianca swallowed.

"I was trying to help."

Julian slowly nodded.

"I see."

He turned toward the head of security.

"Lock every gate."

Bianca frowned.

"What are you doing?"

"No one leaves."

She laughed nervously.

"Julian, this is ridiculous."

He ignored her.

Then spoke another sentence.

One that made every employee stop breathing.

"Bring me every security recording from this property."

Bianca's smile disappeared.

Her heartbeat became audible in her own ears.

Because she remembered something.

Earlier that afternoon...

She had disabled three cameras.

But not all of them.

One camera.

Hidden beneath the balcony.

She wasn't sure whether it had captured everything.

And if it had...

The nightmare she'd spent months trying to avoid had only just begun.

Behind Julian, Martha squeezed his hand with what little strength she had left.

Then whispered six words.

"There are worse secrets upstairs..."

Before Julian could ask what she meant...

She lost consciousness.

And high above them...

Behind the curtains of the third-floor study...

Someone silently lowered a pair of binoculars.

Someone who had witnessed everything.

Someone neither Julian...

May you like

Nor Bianca...

Even knew was inside the mansion.
