Chapter 3: The Voice Beyond the Archives

The laughter stopped as abruptly as it had begun.
Silence settled over the underground corridor.
Not ordinary silence.
The kind that made every breath sound too loud.
Julian swept the flashlight across the concrete floor.
The tiny wet footprints continued into the darkness before fading beneath a rusted steel doorway.
Bianca instinctively stepped closer.
"Did you hear that?"
Julian didn't answer.
He was staring at the monitor.
The recording of his father had frozen on a single frame.
The image wasn't distorted.
It was paused at the exact moment his father had looked directly into the camera, as though he had seen someone standing behind the lens.
Or waiting behind Julian.
The emergency lights flickered to life.
A dim red glow washed over the underground chamber.
Rows of filing cabinets stretched into the shadows like silent witnesses.
Julian walked back to the computer.
He pressed every key.
Nothing.
The hard drive inside had been wiped.
Not years ago.
Recently.
Very recently.
"Someone was here before us," he said.
Bianca folded her arms.
"Maybe your father destroyed everything before he died."
Julian shook his head.
"No."
He pointed to a coffee mug on the desk.
Steam no longer rose from it, but the coffee was still warm.
Less than an hour old.
Someone had been sitting here.
Watching.
Listening.
Then vanished.
One of the guards entered the bunker, breathing hard.
"Sir!"
Julian turned.
"We searched the grounds."
"No one climbed the walls."
"No vehicles entered."
"No one left."
Julian frowned.
"So whoever came down here..."
"...is still inside the estate."
The guard nodded silently.
Bianca felt her pulse quicken.
She glanced toward the corridor where the footprints disappeared.
For the first time that night...
She looked genuinely afraid.
Julian pulled open the nearest filing cabinet.
Inside were hundreds of folders.
Every one carried a photograph.
A servant.
A gardener.
A driver.
A lawyer.
Even the family's chef.
Each folder contained years of reports.
Financial records.
Medical evaluations.
Psychological assessments.
It wasn't employment paperwork.
It was surveillance.
His father had been secretly investigating everyone around him.
Julian opened another drawer.
This time...
He found his own file.
He hesitated before opening it.
Inside were school report cards.
Hospital records.
Photos from birthdays.
Security logs.
Even handwritten notes.
Age 8: Refuses to lie.
Age 12: Protects others before himself.
Age 19: Still trusts too easily.
The final note had no date.
If he ever discovers Project Winter...
Everything changes.
Julian whispered the words aloud.
"Project Winter..."
Bianca's expression changed for only a heartbeat.
Too brief for anyone else to notice.
But Julian caught it.
"You've heard that name before."
"What?"
"Project Winter."
"I haven't."
"You hesitated."
"I was confused."
Julian said nothing.
But another piece of the puzzle had quietly fallen into place.
The corridor beyond the archive room narrowed until the walls became bare stone.
Old stone.
Far older than the mansion itself.
Water dripped steadily from the ceiling.
At the end of the passage stood a heavy iron door.
Unlike every other door in the bunker...
This one had no handle.
Only a circular fingerprint scanner.
Dead.
No power.
Beside it hung a tarnished brass plaque.
PROPERTY OF DR. ELIAS HALE
AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY
Julian stared at his father's name.
"My father wasn't a doctor."
The estate manager, who had finally caught up with them, swallowed hard.
"Officially..."
"No."
Julian turned sharply.
"What do you mean officially?"
The old man's hands trembled.
"I signed a confidentiality agreement thirty years ago."
"Signed with whom?"
"Your father."
"What agreement?"
The old man closed his eyes.
"He told me..."
"...if anyone ever asked about the lower levels..."
"...I was to pretend they never existed."
Before Julian could press further...
A loud metallic clang echoed behind them.
Everyone spun around.
The bookshelf entrance had slammed shut.
The bunker shook.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
One guard ran back toward the archive room.
"It's sealed!"
"What?"
"The exit!"
Julian hurried after him.
The hidden passage had disappeared.
Solid concrete now blocked the staircase.
The mechanism had activated automatically.
Someone had locked them underground.
Bianca's composure finally cracked.
"We need to get out!"
Julian walked to the sealed wall.
Fresh scratches marked the concrete.
As if someone had clawed desperately from the other side.
Then...
His flashlight landed on a small black camera mounted near the ceiling.
The tiny red recording light blinked once.
Someone was watching.
Julian stepped directly beneath it.
"If you're here..."
"Come out."
Only static answered.
Then a speaker hidden somewhere inside the bunker crackled to life.
An elderly voice filled the corridor.
Calm.
Measured.
Impossible.
"Julian..."
He froze.
Every hair on the back of his neck stood up.
That voice.
He had heard it every day until he was eighteen.
His father's voice.
"If you've reached this place..."
"...you can no longer trust appearances."
Bianca slowly backed away.
The voice continued.
"The greatest threat to our family..."
"...was never outside these walls."
Julian looked around.
"Where are you?"
No reply.
Only the faint hum of machinery beginning to awaken beneath the estate.
Lights flickered deeper within the underground complex.
One by one.
Like a sleeping giant opening its eyes.
Then a final sentence echoed through every corridor.
"Julian..."
"Whatever happens next..."
"...don't let anyone leave this bunker."
Before anyone could react...
A loud electronic click came from the iron door at the end of the corridor.
May you like
The fingerprint scanner, dead only moments before, glowed green.
And the door slowly began to open...
