CHAPTER 5: THE CHILD WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The mansion remained in darkness.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound was Lucy's frightened breathing.
She was holding onto Nora's dress with both hands, hiding her face against her mother's chest.
Nora had never seen her daughter this scared.
Not when Celeste hit her.
Not when Daniel pushed her away.
Not even when strangers stared at her at the party.
This was different.
Because whoever was behind that message...
Wasn't trying to hurt Lucy physically.
They wanted her to know.
They wanted her afraid.
Charles Whitmore stood in the center of the room, staring at the blank screens.
For the first time in years...
He looked uncertain.
Not weak.
Never weak.
But shaken.
Nora noticed.
And that terrified her even more.
"Charles."
He didn't answer.
"Charles, who was that?"
Silence.
"Tell me."
Charles slowly turned.
His expression was heavy.
"There are things I should have told you."
Nora's heart sank.
"What things?"
Charles looked at Lucy.
"About her father."
The words made Nora tighten her arms around her daughter.
"Daniel?"
Charles shook his head.
"No."
"The real one."
Twenty-six years earlier...
Before Nora.
Before Daniel.
Before Lucy.
Charles Whitmore was a different man.
A younger man.
A man who believed power could solve everything.
He had built his empire through ambition and sacrifice.
But success came with enemies.
Many enemies.
One of them was a man named Alexander Voss.
A brilliant businessman.
A ruthless strategist.
And the only person who ever came close to destroying Charles.
Their rivalry became legendary.
Two powerful men fighting over industries, investments, and influence.
Until one night...
Everything changed.
Alexander disappeared.
His company collapsed.
And everyone believed he was gone forever.
Everyone except Charles.
Because Charles knew the truth.
Alexander had left behind one secret.
A child.
Present day.
Nora stared at Charles.
"Who is Alexander Voss?"
Charles remained silent.
That silence told her everything.
"You know him."
"Yes."
"Who is he?"
Charles looked at Lucy.
"Her father."
The room felt like it stopped moving.
Nora shook her head.
"No."
"I don't understand."
"Daniel is her father."
Charles looked at the birth certificate.
"No."
"Daniel signed the papers."
"But he was never the biological father."
Nora felt dizzy.
"How?"
Charles sat down.
"Because someone changed the records."
"Someone erased Alexander's name."
"Someone made Daniel appear as Lucy's father."
Nora's face turned pale.
"But why?"
Charles looked toward the security cameras.
"Because Alexander Voss was dangerous."
Nora frowned.
"Dangerous?"
"He wasn't a criminal."
"Then why hide him?"
Charles hesitated.
"Because he knew something."
"What?"
Charles lowered his voice.
"The truth about the people controlling the world's largest companies."
Nora stared.
"What does that have to do with Lucy?"
Charles looked at her.
"Everything."
Across the city...
Daniel sat inside an abandoned office building.
He had been waiting for three hours.
Finally...
The door opened.
Celeste walked in.
But she wasn't wearing her usual confidence.
She looked nervous.
"You came."
Daniel stood.
"You knew."
Celeste avoided his eyes.
"Knew what?"
"That Lucy wasn't my daughter."
Silence.
That was enough.
Daniel laughed.
A bitter, angry laugh.
"You knew."
Celeste said nothing.
"You knew for six years."
"I was protecting you."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Protecting me?"
"You let me raise another man's child."
"You let me believe..."
His voice cracked.
Celeste finally looked at him.
"You think this changes anything?"
Daniel froze.
"What?"
She walked closer.
"Lucy was never the goal."
Daniel frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Celeste opened her bag.
She removed a small envelope.
She placed it on the table.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A young woman.
Holding a baby.
The woman was Nora.
The baby was Lucy.
But behind them...
A man stood.
Alexander Voss.
Daniel looked confused.
"Where did you get this?"
Celeste smiled.
"From the person who started everything."
"Who?"
Her smile disappeared.
"The person who wanted Alexander Voss erased."
Daniel stared.
"Charles?"
Celeste shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
"The Whitmores have enemies."
"But they also have secrets."
Back at the mansion...
Lucy was asleep.
Finally.
After hours of crying.
Nora sat beside her.
Charles stood near the window.
"You should have told me."
"I know."
"No."
Nora looked at him.
"You don't know."
Her voice was quiet.
"You knew something was wrong."
"You investigated Daniel."
"You protected me."
"But you never told me."
Charles looked down.
"I thought I could handle it."
Nora laughed softly.
A painful sound.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Daniel thought he could control everything."
"You thought you could protect everyone."
"And Lucy?"
Charles looked at her.
"What about Lucy?"
Nora touched her daughter's hair.
"She was the one paying the price."
Charles had no answer.
Because she was right.
Then...
A security alarm suddenly activated.
Both of them turned.
A guard's voice came through the speaker.
"Mr. Whitmore!"
"There is someone at the front gate."
Charles immediately became alert.
"Who?"
The guard hesitated.
Then answered:
"Sir..."
"It's a man."
"He's injured."
"He says his name is Alexander Voss."
The room froze.
Nora stood.
Impossible.
Charles stared toward the door.
A man who had been missing for twenty-six years...
Was standing outside.
Alive.
The front doors opened.
Security guards surrounded a man covered in blood.
Older.
Exhausted.
But with the same eyes from the photograph.
Alexander Voss looked past everyone.
His eyes landed on Lucy.
And tears filled his eyes.
"My daughter..."
Nora couldn't move.
Charles stepped forward.
"Alexander."
The man looked at him.
"You let them hide her."
Charles' expression hardened.
"What are you talking about?"
Alexander looked toward Lucy.
His voice trembled.
"They weren't trying to steal the Whitmore inheritance."
"They weren't trying to destroy your family."
A pause.
"They were trying to kill my daughter before she was born."
Everyone froze.
Alexander continued:
"And Daniel Hale..."
"He was never the mastermind."
Nora felt cold.
"Then who was?"
Alexander looked directly at Charles.
The answer came like a weapon.
"The person you trusted most."
Charles' face changed.
"Who?"
Alexander whispered:
"Your own blood."
At that exact moment...
The mansion lights turned off again.
May you like
And a message appeared on every screen.
WELCOME HOME, UNCLE CHARLES.
