CHAPTER 4: THE PERSON HIDING BEHIND DANIEL'S BETRAYAL

The message on the window remained there until sunrise.

Three words.

Three simple words.

But they terrified Nora more than any threat she had ever received.

WE KNOW, LUCY.

She had spent the entire night sitting beside her daughter's bed.

She didn't sleep.

She didn't close her eyes.

Every sound from outside made her heart race.

Every shadow moving across the wall made her reach for Lucy.

Because for the first time in her life...

Nora understood something.

The danger wasn't inside her marriage anymore.

It was outside.

And it was coming closer.

At 6:00 a.m., Charles Whitmore entered the house.

He had changed completely.

The gentle grandfather who held Lucy's hand yesterday was gone.

The businessman had returned.

His security team surrounded the property.

Every camera.

Every entrance.

Every person who came near the house.

Everything was being monitored.

Charles looked at the message on the window.

His face became unreadable.

"Nobody touched this."

Nora looked at him.

"What does it mean?"

Charles didn't answer immediately.

Because he already knew.

And that worried him.

"What?"

Nora stepped closer.

"Charles."

He finally looked at her.

"It means Daniel wasn't working alone."

A cold feeling moved through her body.

"But Daniel was the one who wanted the inheritance."

"Yes."

"Then who else is involved?"

Charles stared at the red words.

"Someone who knows something about Lucy."

Nora hugged herself.

"Everyone knows Lucy is your granddaughter."

"No."

Charles shook his head.

"That's not what they mean."

Nora looked confused.

"Then what?"

Charles lowered his voice.

"They know something about Lucy that I don't."

Meanwhile...

Daniel Hale sat alone in a dark apartment.

Not his mansion.

Not his office.

Not the luxury life he once controlled.

A temporary place.

A place where nobody knew him.

His entire world had collapsed in seventy-two hours.

His bank accounts were frozen.

His company was under investigation.

His friends had stopped answering.

People who once begged for his attention now pretended they had never met him.

But Daniel wasn't thinking about his lost money.

He was thinking about revenge.

His phone rang.

A private number.

He answered immediately.

"You said everything would work."

A voice on the other end remained calm.

"And it would have."

Daniel stood.

"Charles Whitmore destroyed everything."

"No."

The voice replied.

"You destroyed everything."

Daniel clenched his fist.

"I followed your instructions."

"You were supposed to control Nora."

"You were supposed to make her trust you."

"You were supposed to wait until the inheritance transferred."

Daniel became angry.

"How was I supposed to know Charles would come back?"

A pause.

Then the voice spoke.

"Because I told you he might."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

"You forgot something important, Daniel."

"What?"

"You were never the mastermind."

The line went silent.

Daniel's expression changed.

"Who are you?"

The person laughed softly.

A cold, emotionless laugh.

"You really still don't know?"

Then the call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

For the first time...

He felt fear.

Not because he lost everything.

Because he realized he had never been in control.

Back at the Whitmore estate...

Charles sat in his private office.

Thousands of files surrounded him.

His security team had already analyzed the message.

The result was disturbing.

"No fingerprints."

"No camera footage."

"No sign of forced entry."

The head of security placed a file on the desk.

"Whoever did this knew exactly where the cameras couldn't see."

Charles opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph taken outside the house.

From the previous night.

A figure stood in the darkness.

Watching.

Charles studied the image.

The person's face was hidden.

But something caught his attention.

The ring.

A silver ring on the person's hand.

With a symbol engraved on it.

Charles immediately stood.

"No..."

The security chief looked surprised.

"Sir?"

Charles stared at the symbol.

A symbol he hadn't seen in years.

A symbol connected to the darkest moment of his life.

"Find out who took this picture."

"We are trying."

"No."

Charles looked up.

"Find out who owns that ring."

The security chief hesitated.

"Sir..."

"Now."

Hours later...

Nora sat beside Lucy in the garden.

The little girl was quieter than usual.

That hurt Nora more than anything.

Children should be loud.

Messy.

Curious.

They shouldn't look around before speaking.

They shouldn't apologize for existing.

"Mommy?"

Nora smiled gently.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are you mad at Daddy?"

The question surprised her.

She looked at Lucy.

"No."

A small lie.

Lucy noticed.

Children always noticed.

"Then why did Daddy look scared?"

Nora didn't answer.

Because she didn't know how to explain betrayal to a five-year-old.

She didn't know how to explain that some people could say "I love you" while planning to destroy you.

Lucy touched her mother's hand.

"Mommy."

"Yes?"

"Do you still love Daddy?"

Nora looked away.

The question hurt.

"I don't know anymore."

Lucy became silent.

Then she whispered:

"I knew he didn't love us."

Nora's heart broke.

"What?"

Lucy looked down.

"He told Aunt Celeste."

Nora froze.

"What did he tell her?"

Lucy hesitated.

Then whispered:

"He said I was a mistake."

The world stopped.

Nora stared at her daughter.

"What?"

Lucy started crying.

"He said he only stayed because Grandpa was rich."

Nora pulled Lucy into her arms.

Her tears finally fell.

Because there was no excuse anymore.

No misunderstanding.

No explanation.

Daniel had looked at a child.

His own child.

And called her a mistake.

That evening...

Charles returned from his investigation.

But the look on his face told Nora something was wrong.

"What did you find?"

Charles didn't answer.

He placed a folder on the table.

Nora opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Lucy's birth certificate.

She frowned.

"Why are you showing me this?"

Charles pointed to one line.

Nora looked.

Then froze.

The information was impossible.

Her hands started shaking.

"This..."

Her voice broke.

"This can't be right."

Charles looked at her.

"I thought the same thing."

Nora stared at the paper.

Because the name listed under "Father"...

Was not Daniel Hale.

It was someone else.

Someone she had never heard of.

Someone Charles had spent years trying to find.

Then Charles said the words that changed everything.

"Nora..."

"Lucy is not Daniel's daughter."

The room went silent.

Nora stepped back.

"What?"

Charles looked toward the window.

"And whoever left that message..."

"They know who her real father is."

At that moment...

The lights in the entire mansion suddenly went out.

A second later...

Every screen in the house turned on.

A video appeared.

A man sitting in darkness.

His face hidden.

His voice distorted.

But his message was clear.

"Charles Whitmore..."

"You spent six years protecting the wrong child."

Nora grabbed Lucy.

The man continued.

"Because Lucy Hale..."

"Was never supposed to survive."

The screen went black.

And for the first time in years...

May you like

Charles Whitmore felt something he hated.

Fear.
