CHAPTER 14: THE FINAL GAME FOR LUCY

The countdown appeared on every screen.

Every phone.

Every computer.

Every device connected to the Whitmore network.

72:00:00

Three days.

That was all they had.

Three days until Lucy disappeared forever.

Nora stared at the numbers.

Her hands were shaking.

"No..."

She shook her head.

"No, this can't be happening."

Charles stood beside her.

For the first time in his life...

He had no immediate answer.

No strategy.

No perfect plan.

Because this wasn't a business battle.

This wasn't a negotiation.

This was a child.

A five-year-old girl.

His granddaughter.

And someone had taken her.

"I will find her."

Charles' voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the promise.

Nora looked at him.

"You better."

There was no anger in her voice.

Only fear.

The fear of a mother who had already lost her daughter once.

And refused to lose her again.

Inside an unknown location...

Lucy slowly opened her eyes.

The first thing she noticed was the silence.

Not the scary kind.

The strange kind.

The kind where nobody argued.

Nobody shouted.

Nobody cried.

She was lying on a soft bed.

A blanket covered her.

Her stuffed rabbit sat beside her.

Lucy looked around.

She wasn't in the mansion.

She wasn't at home.

She wasn't anywhere she recognized.

Then she heard footsteps.

The door opened.

Elizabeth Voss walked in.

Lucy immediately moved backward.

"Where's Mommy?"

Elizabeth stopped.

For a moment...

Something almost like sadness crossed her face.

"She misses you."

"I want to see her."

"I know."

Lucy hugged her rabbit.

"Are you bad?"

Elizabeth looked at her.

The question was simple.

But it hurt.

"Why do you ask?"

"Everyone says people are bad."

Lucy looked down.

"But bad people don't look sad."

Elizabeth froze.

A five-year-old child had noticed what adults spent years hiding.

"You look sad."

Elizabeth sat down slowly.

"Maybe I am."

"Why?"

Elizabeth looked away.

"Because I lost everything."

Lucy tilted her head.

"Then why did you take me?"

A long silence.

Finally...

Elizabeth answered:

"Because I am trying to save you."

Back at the Whitmore mansion...

The search had begun.

Charles' entire security network was activated.

Satellite tracking.

Private investigators.

Every resource available.

Nothing.

Elizabeth had vanished without leaving a trace.

Noah stood in the control room watching the screens.

"You won't find her."

Charles looked at him.

"What did you say?"

Noah didn't turn.

"I said you won't find her."

Charles' eyes narrowed.

"Then tell me where she is."

Noah remained silent.

Charles stepped closer.

"You know something."

"I know Elizabeth."

"Then talk."

Noah finally looked at him.

"She didn't take Lucy to hurt her."

"She took her because she believes she is the only person who can protect her."

Nora walked in.

"Protect her from what?"

Noah looked at the countdown.

"The Architect."

Everyone became silent.

Daniel sat alone in the mansion's guest room.

For the first time in years...

He wasn't thinking about money.

Or power.

Or revenge.

He was thinking about Lucy.

The little girl who called him Daddy.

The little girl he failed.

He remembered the party.

Her frightened eyes.

Her tiny voice.

"Daddy..."

He had ignored her.

A memory he could never erase.

The door opened.

Nora stood there.

Daniel looked up.

He expected anger.

Hatred.

Maybe even violence.

But Nora only looked tired.

"Why are you here?"

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"Because I know where Victor Vale will go."

Nora froze.

"What?"

Daniel stood.

"I spent years working for these people."

"I learned how they think."

"I know their patterns."

Charles entered behind Nora.

"Why should we trust you?"

Daniel looked at him.

"You shouldn't."

A pause.

"But you don't have time to hate me."

Charles studied him.

Daniel continued.

"Victor Vale doesn't want Lucy."

"He wants the key inside her."

"And when he gets it..."

Daniel swallowed.

"He won't need any of us anymore."

Meanwhile...

Lucy sat with Elizabeth.

The woman who had once been a mystery.

Now she was just someone who looked tired.

"Did Mommy know about me?"

Lucy asked.

Elizabeth looked surprised.

"What?"

"Did Mommy know you were my mommy?"

Elizabeth's eyes softened.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because people would hurt you."

Lucy thought for a moment.

"Did Daddy know?"

Elizabeth looked away.

"No."

"Daniel was never your father."

Lucy hugged her rabbit.

"I know."

The answer surprised Elizabeth.

"You know?"

Lucy nodded.

"He never hugged me like Daddy should."

The words hit Elizabeth.

Because children didn't need DNA tests.

They knew who loved them.

And who didn't.

Back at the mansion...

Alexander found something.

A hidden file.

Inside Charles' old records.

He opened it.

Then froze.

"No..."

Noah looked over.

"What?"

Alexander turned the screen.

A document.

A project file.

Created twenty-six years ago.

PROJECT LUCY

Charles walked closer.

His expression changed.

"Where did you find this?"

Alexander looked at him.

"You knew."

Charles said nothing.

Nora looked between them.

"What is Project Lucy?"

Silence.

Then Charles finally answered.

"A contingency plan."

"For what?"

Charles looked at the document.

"For the day Victor Vale returned."

Nora felt betrayed again.

"You knew this could happen?"

"I prepared for it."

"You prepared?"

Her voice rose.

"While my daughter lived a normal life?"

Charles looked broken.

"I wanted her to have a childhood."

"And you hid the truth from everyone."

"I was trying to protect her."

Nora shook her head.

"Everyone says that."

She looked at Charles.

"Everyone hurts her and calls it protection."

Those words destroyed him.

Because they were true.

At the unknown location...

Elizabeth received a message.

She opened it.

One sentence.

YOU CANNOT HIDE THE KEY FOREVER.

Her face changed.

Lucy noticed.

"Who is it?"

Elizabeth looked at the child.

Then at the door.

"They found us."

Suddenly...

The building shook.

Alarms activated.

Elizabeth stood immediately.

For the first time...

Lucy saw fear in her eyes.

"Stay behind me."

The door exploded open.

Several armed people entered.

But Elizabeth wasn't looking at them.

She was looking at the man walking behind them.

A man wearing a dark suit.

Calm.

Smiling.

The man who had controlled everything.

Victor Vale.

He looked at Lucy.

And smiled.

"After twenty-six years..."

"I finally meet the little girl who destroyed my empire."

Lucy held onto Elizabeth.

Victor walked closer.

"Don't be afraid."

"I won't hurt you."

A pause.

"I just need what belongs to me."

Elizabeth stepped in front of Lucy.

"No."

Victor smiled.

"Elizabeth."

"You always were emotional."

He looked at Lucy.

"But Charles made the same mistake."

"He chose love over power."

Victor reached out his hand.

"And now..."

"I will show Lucy what happens when people choose the wrong side."

Suddenly...

A voice echoed from the entrance.

"Step away from my granddaughter."

Everyone turned.

Charles Whitmore stood there.

Behind him...

Nora.

Alexander.

Noah.

And Daniel.

Victor smiled.

"Perfect."

"The entire family is here."

He looked at Charles.

"Now we can finally finish the game."

The countdown continued.
