CHAPTER 13: THE ARCHITECT BEHIND THE SHADOWS

The symbol on the screen remained.
A black circle.
A silver mark through the center.
A symbol Charles Whitmore had spent thirty years trying to erase from history.
But it was back.
And this time...
It was inside his home.
Everyone stared at the screen.
Even Margaret.
And that was the detail nobody missed.
For the first time since she entered the mansion...
Margaret Whitmore looked afraid.
Charles noticed.
"Mother."
His voice was low.
"You know who this is."
Margaret said nothing.
Charles stepped closer.
"You know."
The older woman looked at the screen.
Then quietly said:
"The Architect."
The name alone changed the atmosphere.
Nora frowned.
"Who is that?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in the room had different reasons to fear that name.
The Architect.
Not a person.
Not officially.
A title.
A legend whispered among the most powerful people in the world.
A person who never appeared.
A person who never gave orders directly.
A person who moved companies, governments, and families like pieces on a chessboard.
For decades...
Everyone thought Charles Whitmore controlled the game.
The truth was much worse.
Charles had only been a player.
Daniel stood frozen.
"You knew?"
Margaret looked at him.
"Knew what?"
"That this person existed."
Margaret didn't respond.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Of course you knew."
"You always knew."
He looked around the room.
"We were all fools."
Charles turned toward him.
"Explain."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"The Architect is the reason I met Celeste."
"The reason I approached Nora."
"The reason I entered the Whitmore family."
Nora's face hardened.
"So all those years..."
Daniel looked at her.
"I was following orders."
The room became silent.
Nora wanted to hate him.
She had every reason.
But seeing him broken...
Seeing him finally admit the truth...
Made something else appear.
Disgust.
Not anger.
Because she realized Daniel had never been a husband.
He had been a mission.
The screen suddenly flickered.
A voice appeared.
Distorted.
Neither male nor female.
Calm.
Almost emotionless.
"How touching."
Everyone turned.
"The family finally gathered."
Charles stepped forward.
"Show yourself."
The voice laughed softly.
"Still giving commands."
"Even when you have lost control."
Charles' eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?"
A pause.
Then:
"You know me."
"No."
Charles replied.
"I don't."
The voice became colder.
"That is your greatest weakness, Charles."
"You always forget the people beneath you."
A video appeared.
A young Charles.
A young Margaret.
A young Elizabeth.
A young Richard.
And another person.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone whose face had been hidden.
Nora leaned closer.
"Who is that?"
Charles stared.
His breathing changed.
Because he recognized the person.
"No..."
Margaret looked away.
Charles whispered:
"Impossible."
The video continued.
A younger Charles was speaking.
"We can't allow Alexander Voss to release the information."
A younger Margaret answered:
"Then we remove the threat."
The hidden person stepped forward.
And a voice from the past said:
"Not yet."
"First, we use his family."
The video ended.
Everyone looked at Charles.
Because the truth was finally clear.
The Architect had been there from the beginning.
Watching.
Planning.
Controlling.
"Who was that person?"
Nora asked.
Charles didn't answer.
Alexander stepped forward.
"I know."
Everyone looked at him.
Alexander stared at the screen.
"That person wasn't part of the Whitmore family."
"Then who?"
Alexander's face turned pale.
"He was the founder."
"The person who created the organization."
Noah looked at him.
"The Architect."
Alexander nodded.
"Yes."
Nora whispered:
"Who?"
Alexander answered:
"Victor Vale."
The name meant nothing to Nora.
But Charles reacted immediately.
Because Victor Vale was the only person who ever made Charles Whitmore afraid.
Twenty-six years earlier.
Victor Vale wasn't the richest man.
He wasn't the most famous.
He didn't own companies.
He owned something more valuable.
Information.
He knew everyone's secrets.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Families.
Everyone.
And Charles made the mistake of challenging him.
Charles thought he won.
He thought he destroyed the organization.
He was wrong.
Victor Vale simply disappeared.
And waited.
Present day.
Charles walked away from the screen.
His mind was racing.
"Why Lucy?"
Nobody answered.
Until Noah spoke.
"Because she has what he wants."
Nora looked at him.
"What?"
Noah looked serious.
"Not money."
"Not power."
"Something else."
Charles turned.
"What?"
Noah looked at Lucy's bedroom.
"Proof."
The room became silent.
"Proof of what?"
Noah answered:
"That Victor Vale owns the world's most powerful people."
Alexander's expression changed.
"The database."
Noah nodded.
"The one my father created."
Nora looked confused.
"Inside Lucy?"
Alexander explained:
"Before Lucy was born, Elizabeth discovered Victor planned to erase every person connected to the database."
"She hid the final access key."
"Where?"
Alexander looked at Lucy.
"Inside a genetic code."
Nora's eyes widened.
"You're saying..."
Charles finished the sentence.
"Lucy is the key."
Suddenly...
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
Nora screamed:
"Lucy!"
They ran.
The bedroom door was open.
The window was broken.
The curtains moved in the wind.
And Lucy was gone.
Nora collapsed.
"No..."
Charles immediately called security.
"Find her!"
Every guard moved.
Alexander searched the room.
Noah stood silently.
Then he saw something.
A small piece of paper on Lucy's bed.
He picked it up.
His face changed.
"What is it?"
Charles asked.
Noah handed him the paper.
Only one sentence was written.
THANK YOU FOR KEEPING HER SAFE FOR ME.
Below it...
A signature.
A name.
Charles' hands began shaking.
Because the person who took Lucy...
Was the one person nobody expected.
ELIZABETH VOSS.
Nora looked at Alexander.
"Your wife took our daughter."
Alexander's face went pale.
"No."
He looked toward the broken window.
"She didn't take Lucy."
A pause.
"She took her because she knows who is coming."
Charles stared.
"Who?"
Alexander whispered:
"The Architect."
Then every phone in the mansion received the same message.
A countdown.
72 HOURS.
May you like
UNTIL LUCY RETURNS.
IF SHE RETURNS.
