CHAPTER 3: THE MARRIAGE THAT WAS BUILT ON A LIE

The words left Lucy's mouth like a tiny whisper.

But they landed harder than any scream.

"Daddy said..."

"He only needed me until he got everything."

Nora stopped breathing.

For several seconds, she couldn't move.

She couldn't blink.

She couldn't even process what her five-year-old daughter had just said.

Charles Whitmore stared at Lucy.

The most powerful man in the city.

A man who had faced angry investors, hostile competitors, and enemies who wanted to destroy him.

But nothing had prepared him for seeing his granddaughter carry a memory like that.

"Lucy..."

Charles knelt beside the bed.

His voice softened.

"Sweetheart, when did Daddy say that?"

Lucy looked down.

Her fingers grabbed the blanket.

The same nervous gesture Nora had seen hundreds of times.

"I don't know."

"Maybe before."

"Maybe when Mommy was crying."

Nora's heart cracked.

"When was Mommy crying?"

Lucy looked at her mother.

"You were in the kitchen."

"You told Daddy you wanted to leave."

Nora froze.

That night.

She remembered.

Two years ago.

She had stood in the kitchen at midnight, holding back tears while Daniel told her she was becoming difficult.

She had considered leaving.

For the first time.

But Daniel had apologized.

He had hugged her.

He had promised he would change.

And she stayed.

Because Lucy loved her father.

Because Nora wanted her daughter to have a complete family.

Because she believed marriage was something you fought for.

But now...

She wondered if she had been fighting alone.

Charles slowly stood.

His expression had changed.

The sadness disappeared.

Something much darker replaced it.

"How long?"

Nora looked at him.

"What?"

"How long has Daniel treated you this way?"

She looked away.

Silence answered for her.

Charles understood.

"You protected him."

Nora swallowed.

"I thought I could fix him."

"You can't fix someone who benefits from hurting you."

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

Three days later.

Daniel Hale stood outside the Whitmore Tower.

The tallest building in the city.

A place he had visited countless times.

A place where people once shook his hand.

Where executives called him "sir."

Where everyone believed he was a rising star.

Today...

Security stopped him at the entrance.

"Mr. Hale, your access has been revoked."

Daniel stared.

"You know who I am?"

The guard didn't react.

"Yes."

"That's why I'm informing you."

Daniel clenched his jaw.

"This is a misunderstanding."

"No."

A voice came from behind him.

"Unfortunately, it isn't."

Daniel turned.

Charles Whitmore stood there.

Surrounded by executives.

Daniel forced a smile.

"Charles."

No response.

"Can we talk privately?"

Charles looked at the security guard.

"Give us five minutes."

The guard stepped away.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"You are destroying my company."

Charles looked at him calmly.

"Your company?"

Daniel paused.

Charles continued.

"Interesting."

"You never called it yours when my people built it."

Daniel's face changed.

"You knew?"

"I knew everything."

Charles walked closer.

"I knew about your debts."

"I knew about your investments."

"I knew about your relationship with Celeste."

Daniel's expression finally cracked.

"You investigated me?"

"No."

Charles smiled coldly.

"I protected my daughter."

Daniel looked away.

"You don't understand."

"I loved Nora."

The sentence almost made Charles laugh.

Almost.

"Love?"

He repeated the word.

"Is that what you call pretending for six years?"

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"You don't know our marriage."

"I know enough."

Charles pulled out a folder.

He handed it to him.

Daniel opened it.

His face slowly changed.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Messages.

Photographs.

Everything.

His secret meetings with Celeste.

His discussions about the Whitmore inheritance.

His plans to gain control of Nora's shares after marriage.

Daniel's hands started shaking.

"Where did you get this?"

Charles didn't answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

He had been watching.

Waiting.

Daniel looked up.

"How long have you known?"

"Since before the wedding."

Daniel froze.

"Then why didn't you stop me?"

Charles' eyes became colder.

"Because I wanted to know how far you would go."

A silence followed.

Then Charles said:

"And now I know."

That afternoon...

Celeste Arden sat inside her luxury apartment.

She was furious.

Everything was falling apart.

Her reputation.

Her relationship with Daniel.

Her future.

She threw her phone onto the table.

"This wasn't supposed to happen."

A voice answered.

"Neither was your mistake."

Celeste turned.

A man stood near the window.

She immediately became nervous.

"You said everything would be fine."

The man smiled.

"Because it would have been."

"Until you lost control."

Celeste looked away.

"I didn't expect Charles Whitmore to appear."

"You should have."

The man's smile disappeared.

"Everyone knows Charles protects his family."

Celeste walked closer.

"What happens now?"

The man looked at her.

"Now we change the plan."

Celeste frowned.

"What plan?"

He opened a folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Lucy.

But not from the party.

A much older photograph.

One Celeste had never seen.

"Before Daniel married Nora..."

"He had another problem."

Celeste stared.

"What are you talking about?"

The man placed the picture on the table.

"Lucy isn't the only secret in this family."

Celeste's face changed.

"What does that mean?"

The man smiled.

"It means Charles Whitmore doesn't know the entire truth."

That night...

Nora returned home for the first time since the incident.

The house felt different.

Cold.

Empty.

Like a place where happiness had disappeared.

Lucy was asleep upstairs.

Charles had arranged security outside.

Nora walked into the living room.

Memories surrounded her.

The first family photo.

Lucy's birthday parties.

Daniel holding their daughter.

All the moments she thought were real.

Then she saw something.

A small box hidden behind a bookshelf.

She frowned.

She had lived here for six years.

She had never seen it before.

Slowly, she opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Her hands trembled as she read the first page.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

Her name.

Daniel's name.

The date...

Five years ago.

Nora felt sick.

Five years ago?

Daniel had already prepared divorce papers?

Before Lucy even turned one?

She continued reading.

Then she found something else.

A letter.

Written by Daniel.

Her heart stopped.

Because the first sentence destroyed everything she believed.

"Nora doesn't know yet..."

She kept reading.

"...but once I gain control of the Whitmore inheritance, I will no longer need this marriage."

Nora covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Six years.

Six years of love.

Six years of sacrifice.

Six years believing she was building a family.

When in reality...

She had been living inside someone else's plan.

Then another line caught her attention.

A line that made her blood turn cold.

"After Lucy's fifth birthday, everything will finally belong to me."

Nora dropped the letter.

Because Lucy's fifth birthday...

Was last week.

The night of the party.

The night Daniel chose Celeste.

The night he thought he had won.

But he didn't know one thing.

Charles Whitmore had returned.

And Nora had finally seen the truth.

Upstairs...

Lucy suddenly screamed.

"MOMMY!"

Nora ran.

She rushed into the bedroom.

Lucy was sitting up, shaking.

"What happened?"

Lucy pointed toward the window.

Her face was pale.

"There was someone outside."

Nora looked.

The street was empty.

But on the glass window...

Someone had left a message.

Written in red.

Three words.

"WE KNOW, LUCY."

Nora stepped back.

Because now she understood.

Daniel's betrayal was only the beginning.

May you like

Someone else was watching.

And they knew something about Lucy that even Charles Whitmore didn't know.
