CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL WHO WAS LEFT UNPROTECTED

The ballroom had never looked more beautiful.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling like frozen waterfalls, casting golden light across a sea of diamonds, expensive suits, and carefully practiced smiles.

Everyone inside the room belonged to a world where problems were hidden behind champagne glasses and polite laughter.

Everyone except one little girl.

Lucy Hale stood beneath the massive chandelier, holding a glass of orange juice with both hands.

She was only five years old.

Her white dress shimmered under the lights, carefully chosen by her mother hours before the event.

"You'll look like a little piece of summer," Nora Hale had whispered while fixing Lucy's hair.

Lucy had smiled then.

Because when her mother smiled, Lucy felt safe.

But now...

The little girl wanted to disappear.

Every time someone walked past her, she lowered her eyes.

Every laugh from the adults made her shoulders tighten.

She didn't understand the conversations around her.

She didn't understand the wealth.

The power.

The invisible rules everyone seemed to know except her.

She only knew one thing.

She didn't want to embarrass Mommy.

Across the room, Nora watched her daughter carefully.

She noticed the small signs.

The way Lucy squeezed the glass tighter.

The way she stood completely still.

The way she looked around as if she was searching for someone.

For her.

Nora immediately started walking toward her.

But she was too late.

Because someone else reached Lucy first.

Celeste Arden.

A woman who walked through the ballroom like she owned the entire building.

Her silver gown sparkled with every step.

Her smile was flawless.

Her reputation was powerful.

And behind that beautiful appearance was a heart made of ice.

There was plenty of room around Lucy.

Hundreds of empty spaces.

Yet Celeste walked directly toward the little girl.

She didn't slow down.

She didn't move aside.

And then...

Her shoulder hit Lucy.

Hard.

The little girl's body stumbled backward.

Her fingers lost their grip.

The glass slipped.

Time seemed to stop.

The orange juice spilled across Celeste's expensive gown.

The entire ballroom went silent.

Celeste looked down.

Not at Lucy.

At her dress.

A small orange stain spread across the expensive fabric.

Her expression changed instantly.

"You ruined my dress."

Lucy froze.

Her eyes widened.

"I... I'm sorry."

Her tiny voice barely escaped.

"I didn't mean to."

But Celeste wasn't listening.

She looked at Lucy as if she wasn't a child.

As if she was an inconvenience.

"Do you know how much this costs?"

Lucy stepped back.

"I'm sorry..."

The little girl started crying.

"I didn't do it on purpose."

That was when Celeste raised her hand.

And the sound echoed across the ballroom.

SMACK.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Lucy stared ahead in shock.

The world around her became silent.

Then her small body fell backward.

She hit the marble floor.

A tiny white tooth rolled away.

Blood appeared on her lip.

For several seconds, nobody reacted.

Then Lucy whispered the only word she could think of.

"Mommy..."

Nora heard it.

And everything inside her shattered.

She pushed through the crowd.

She didn't care about the guests.

She didn't care about the whispers.

She didn't care about the reputation of anyone in that room.

Her daughter was hurt.

She dropped beside Lucy.

"Oh my God..."

Her hands trembled as she touched Lucy's face.

"Baby, look at Mommy."

Lucy opened her eyes.

"Mama..."

Nora pulled her into her arms.

"It's okay."

"I'm here."

Then Nora looked up.

And saw Celeste standing there.

Worried about her dress.

Not the bleeding child.

Something inside Nora broke.

She slowly stood.

"Stay away from my daughter."

Celeste raised an eyebrow.

"Excuse me?"

"You hit a five-year-old."

Celeste scoffed.

"She ruined my dress."

Nora stared at her.

"She's bleeding."

The room became colder.

Then a voice cut through the silence.

"Nora."

She turned.

Daniel Hale.

Her husband.

The man who was supposed to stand beside her.

The man who promised to protect their family.

But his eyes weren't on Lucy.

They weren't on the blood.

They were on Celeste.

"You assaulted her."

Nora couldn't believe what she heard.

"What?"

Daniel walked closer.

"You pushed Celeste."

"Our daughter is injured!"

"You embarrassed me tonight."

The words hit harder than any slap.

Lucy looked up weakly.

"Daddy..."

Daniel stopped.

For a moment, Nora thought he would finally understand.

She thought he would look at his daughter.

She thought he would run to her.

But Daniel did something else.

He stepped between Nora and Celeste.

Then he pushed Nora away.

She fell onto the marble floor.

"Mommy!"

Lucy screamed.

The entire ballroom watched.

A father had chosen a stranger over his own child.

Nora ignored the pain.

She crawled back to Lucy.

"It's okay, baby."

"I'm here."

Blood stained her expensive dress as she held her daughter.

Then she looked at Daniel.

For six years, she had defended him.

She told herself he was stressed.

That he was under pressure.

That he wasn't really cold.

But she finally understood.

A man who watches his child suffer and chooses someone else...

Isn't confused.

He is choosing.

Daniel looked at them.

No regret.

No guilt.

Only annoyance.

"You both deserved this."

Those words destroyed the last piece of love Nora had left.

Then...

The ballroom doors opened.

Four security guards entered.

Everyone turned.

Behind them walked Charles Whitmore.

The most powerful man in the room.

His presence silenced conversations instantly.

He stopped.

His eyes moved across the scene.

The broken glass.

The spilled juice.

Celeste's stained dress.

Daniel standing above Nora.

Then...

He saw Lucy.

His granddaughter.

A five-year-old girl crying in her mother's arms.

Something changed in Charles' expression.

Not anger.

Something colder.

A promise.

He walked forward.

His voice was calm.

But every person heard it.

"Who..."

The room held its breath.

"Who touched my daughter..."

Charles looked at Nora.

Then at Lucy.

"And who hurt my granddaughter?"

Daniel's face turned pale.

Because at that moment...

He finally understood.

He had not just hurt his wife.

He had not just ignored a child.

May you like

He had declared war against the Whitmore family.

And nobody survived a war against Charles Whitmore.
