Chapter 5: The Hunt Begins

The note sat on Leo's empty bed.
A small piece of paper.
A few simple words.
But to Julian...
It felt heavier than a thousand-page confession.
You wanted the truth about the boy.
Now come find him.
For the first time in years, Julian Hart felt something dangerously close to fear.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for someone else.
"LEO!"
Sarah's scream echoed through the hallway.
She rushed into the bedroom behind him.
The moment she saw the empty bed, her face turned pale.
"No..."
She grabbed the blanket.
"No, no, no..."
Her hands shook violently.
"He was right here."
Julian immediately moved toward her.
"Sarah."
"He was right here, Julian!"
Her voice broke.
"I told him he would be safe."
The pain in her eyes cut deeper than any threat.
Julian looked around the room.
The window was closed.
The door had no signs of forced entry.
The security system had failed at the exact moment someone needed it to.
This wasn't a random kidnapping.
Someone inside had helped them.
Julian turned sharply.
"Nobody leaves this mansion."
The guards immediately surrounded the hallway.
He looked at the security chief.
"Find every person who had access tonight."
"Yes, sir."
"And check every camera."
"Even the damaged ones."
The officer hesitated.
"Sir, the system was completely shut down."
Julian's expression hardened.
"Nothing is completely shut down."
Twenty minutes later...
The security room was filled with silence.
Technicians worked through layers of encrypted data.
Finally, one of them spoke.
"Sir."
Julian turned.
"We recovered three seconds."
Everyone looked at the monitor.
The footage was damaged.
Static filled the screen.
Then...
A figure appeared.
A person walking through the hallway.
Carrying Leo.
Sarah covered her mouth.
The person wore a black uniform.
Face hidden.
But there was something strange.
They weren't dragging Leo.
They were carrying him carefully.
Like someone protecting him.
Julian noticed immediately.
"Zoom in."
The image became clearer.
On the person's wrist...
A small symbol.
A silver cross.
Julian froze.
Sarah noticed.
"You know that symbol?"
His silence answered before his words did.
"Yes."
"What is it?"
Julian stared at the screen.
"An organization."
Years earlier...
Before Hart Global became one of the world's largest companies...
Julian had worked with private intelligence groups.
During that time, he encountered a network known as:
The Silver Covenant.
They weren't a government agency.
They weren't criminals.
They operated between both worlds.
Information.
Protection.
Secrets.
Their clients were powerful people.
Politicians.
Billionaires.
Families with dangerous histories.
Julian had thought they disappeared years ago.
He was wrong.
"Why would they take Leo?"
Sarah asked.
Julian didn't answer immediately.
Because one possibility frightened him.
"The Silver Covenant doesn't kidnap children."
"Then why?"
"They remove threats."
Sarah's eyes widened.
"You think they believe Leo is a threat?"
Julian looked at the footage.
"No."
A pause.
"I think someone hired them to make him disappear."
Meanwhile...
Miles away from Hart Manor...
Leo slowly opened his eyes.
The first thing he noticed was the smell.
Old wood.
Dust.
Rain.
He was lying on a soft couch inside an unfamiliar room.
He sat up quickly.
"Mom?"
No answer.
"Julian?"
Silence.
Panic began rising.
Then a voice came from the corner.
"You're awake."
Leo turned.
A woman stood there.
She looked to be in her forties.
Dark hair.
Calm eyes.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Leo moved backward.
"Who are you?"
The woman slowly approached.
"My name is Clara."
"Are you with Aunt Eleanor?"
The woman's expression changed.
Almost like sadness.
"No."
"Then why did you bring me here?"
Clara looked toward the window.
"Because if I didn't..."
She paused.
"...someone else would have."
Leo didn't understand.
"You kidnapped me."
Clara looked at him.
"I know how it looks."
"But I saved your life."
Back at Hart Manor...
Julian received a message.
Coordinates.
Nothing else.
Sarah looked at the screen.
"Is that where Leo is?"
Julian nodded.
"We're going."
The security chief stepped forward.
"Sir, it could be a trap."
Julian picked up his jacket.
"It is."
"Then why go?"
Julian looked toward Leo's empty room.
"Because they know something I don't."
Sarah grabbed her coat.
"I'm coming."
Julian shook his head.
"No."
Her eyes narrowed.
"You think I'm staying here?"
"Sarah..."
"No."
Her voice became steady.
"I spent years searching for that child."
"I lost him once."
She looked directly at him.
"I won't lose him again."
Julian saw the determination in her eyes.
He didn't argue.
The coordinates led them to an abandoned church outside the city.
Rain poured heavily.
The old building stood alone among dead trees.
Julian entered first.
His security team followed.
The doors creaked open.
Inside...
A single candle burned.
And sitting beneath the broken stained-glass window...
Was Clara.
With Leo beside her.
Sarah immediately moved forward.
"Leo!"
The boy ran toward her.
She dropped to her knees and hugged him.
"I'm sorry."
"I'm so sorry."
Leo held onto her tightly.
"I knew you would come."
Those words made Sarah cry.
But Julian didn't relax.
Because Clara was still there.
Watching.
Waiting.
"Who are you?"
Julian asked.
Clara looked at him.
"You already know."
"I don't."
She smiled sadly.
"Yes, you do."
Then she reached into her coat.
Everyone immediately raised their weapons.
But Clara only removed an old photograph.
She handed it to Julian.
The picture showed a hospital room.
A young woman holding a newborn baby.
Standing beside her...
Was Daniel Cross.
Julian stared.
Because he recognized the woman.
Sarah recognized her too.
Her own face appeared in the photograph.
Except...
It wasn't Sarah.
It was someone who looked exactly like her.
Clara spoke softly.
"The child you have been protecting..."
"Is not the only secret they buried."
Julian looked at the photograph again.
His blood turned cold.
Because written on the back were three words.
Sarah Bennett died.
The room went silent.
Sarah stared at the photo.
"What?"
Clara looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
"You need to know the truth."
Julian stepped between them.
"Explain."
Clara took a deep breath.
"Seven years ago, there was an accident."
"Daniel Cross died."
"His wife died."
"Their child disappeared."
She looked at Sarah.
"And another woman took her place."
Sarah's face went pale.
"No."
Clara continued.
"The woman standing here..."
She pointed at Sarah.
"Is not the person everyone believes she is."
Lightning flashed through the broken windows.
Leo clung tighter to Sarah.
Julian looked from the photograph...
To Sarah.
To Leo.
And suddenly realized the truth was far larger than a custody battle.
Someone hadn't just erased a child's identity.
May you like
Someone had erased an entire family.
