Chapter 4: The Enemy Inside the Walls

The photograph remained on Julian's phone.

Sarah standing outside Hart Manor.

Leo's future protector.

His only safe place.

And someone had been close enough to capture the image.

Julian didn't move for several seconds.

The room around him seemed to disappear.

His security system was supposed to be impossible to breach.

Every camera.

Every sensor.

Every guard.

Nothing entered his property without his knowledge.

Yet someone had done exactly that.

Not only had they entered...

They had wanted him to know.

"Sir?"

His security chief's voice pulled him back.

Julian turned.

"Lock down the entire estate."

The man's expression changed.

"All entrances?"

"Everything."

"Nobody enters. Nobody leaves."

"Yes, sir."

The order spread instantly.

Throughout Hart Manor, doors sealed.

Security teams moved through the corridors.

The peaceful mansion transformed into a controlled fortress.

Sarah noticed immediately.

She walked into the security room where Julian stood watching dozens of camera feeds.

"What happened?"

Julian didn't answer.

That frightened her more than anything.

"Julian."

He turned.

"They know where we are."

Her face lost color.

"What?"

"They took a photograph of you outside."

Sarah looked toward the hallway where Leo was sleeping.

"No..."

Julian stepped closer.

"They haven't reached him."

"But they tried."

His voice became colder.

"And they will try again."

Inside the security room, dozens of screens displayed every corner of the estate.

Garden.

Driveway.

Main entrance.

Guest rooms.

Nothing unusual appeared.

One guard zoomed in on the eastern perimeter.

"Wait."

Everyone looked.

A small movement appeared near the trees outside the wall.

The image was blurry.

The guard enhanced it.

A person stood there.

Watching.

Julian immediately ordered:

"Send a team."

Three guards moved quickly.

But when they reached the location...

There was no one.

Only a small object placed beneath a tree.

A black envelope.

Julian opened it himself.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

No fingerprints.

No writing except one sentence.

You are protecting the wrong child.

Sarah looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Julian folded the paper.

"It means they're trying to make us doubt everything."

"But why?"

Before he could answer...

A voice came from the doorway.

"Because they know the truth is dangerous."

Everyone turned.

Leo stood there.

Still wearing his pajamas.

His eyes were wide.

Sarah immediately rushed toward him.

"Leo, you should be sleeping."

But the boy looked at Julian.

"I remember something."

The room became silent.

Julian slowly knelt.

"What do you remember?"

Leo hesitated.

His small hands gripped his shirt.

"When I was little..."

He looked down.

"There was another man."

Sarah gently touched his shoulder.

"What man?"

"I don't know."

Leo closed his eyes, trying to remember.

"He used to visit Eleanor."

Julian's expression changed.

"What did he look like?"

Leo thought carefully.

"He was old."

"Gray hair."

"Always wore a blue suit."

Sarah and Julian exchanged a glance.

The man from Eleanor's prison meeting.

The unknown person controlling everything.

"Did he ever say his name?"

Leo shook his head.

"But..."

The boy whispered:

"Eleanor called him Uncle."

The investigation moved immediately.

Julian's team searched every connection between Eleanor Whitmore and wealthy families across the country.

Within hours...

They found one name.

Victor Blackwell.

A former business partner of Daniel Cross.

A billionaire investor.

A man known publicly as a philanthropist.

But privately...

A person connected to multiple financial scandals.

Julian stared at the information.

"Victor."

Sarah looked at him.

"You know him?"

Julian's expression darkened.

"Yes."

"Years ago, Daniel Cross discovered Victor was stealing from their company."

"What happened?"

"Daniel planned to expose him."

Sarah slowly understood.

"And then Daniel died."

Julian nodded.

The connection was becoming clear.

Daniel Cross wasn't just a dead businessman.

He had been a threat.

A man who knew too much.

And Leo...

Leo was the last remaining piece of evidence.

That evening...

Julian received another call.

This time from the police.

"Mr. Hart."

"Officer?"

"We need you to come to the station."

"Why?"

A pause.

"We found Eleanor's lawyer."

"And?"

"He confessed."

Julian frowned.

"To what?"

The officer lowered his voice.

"He says the custody case was never about the child."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"What was it about?"

"The inheritance."

At the station...

Eleanor's lawyer sat across from Julian.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His confidence had disappeared.

"I made a mistake."

Julian remained silent.

The lawyer continued.

"Eleanor was never trying to regain custody."

"She was trying to gain control of a trust."

Sarah's face tightened.

"What trust?"

The lawyer looked at Leo.

Then away.

"Daniel Cross left everything to his son."

Julian leaned forward.

"How much?"

The lawyer swallowed.

"Estimated value..."

He hesitated.

"Nearly two billion dollars."

Silence.

Sarah looked at Leo.

The little boy didn't understand.

He only saw adults staring at him.

Julian immediately stood.

"Who else knows?"

The lawyer looked terrified.

"Everyone who was involved."

"Then why tell us now?"

The lawyer's hands trembled.

"Because the people behind this..."

He looked toward the window.

"...they don't want the money anymore."

Julian narrowed his eyes.

"What do they want?"

The lawyer whispered:

"They want the boy gone."

Later that night...

Julian returned to Hart Manor.

Leo was asleep.

Sarah stood waiting.

"Two billion dollars."

Julian nodded.

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"That explains Eleanor."

"It explains Victor."

"But not everything."

Julian knew she was right.

Because money alone didn't explain the fear.

It didn't explain the destroyed records.

It didn't explain why an entire identity had been erased.

At 3:17 a.m...

Every alarm in Hart Manor activated.

Julian woke instantly.

Gunfire.

Not inside.

Outside.

He reached the security room within seconds.

"Report."

The guard stared at the monitor.

"Someone breached the north gate."

"How many?"

"Unknown."

Julian watched the screen.

Three figures moved through the darkness.

Professional.

Silent.

Trained.

Not thieves.

Not criminals.

Assassins.

Sarah appeared behind him.

"What is happening?"

Julian turned.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"They came for Leo."

A loud crash echoed through the mansion.

The lights suddenly went out.

Emergency systems failed.

Someone had cut the power.

In the darkness...

A small voice cried from upstairs.

"Dad..."

Julian froze.

Not because of the danger.

Because Leo had never called him that before.

And now...

The first person the boy called for was him.

Julian ran.

Up the stairs.

Toward the sound.

Toward the child he had promised to protect.

But when he reached the bedroom...

The door was open.

The room was empty.

Only one thing remained on the bed.

Leo's blanket.

And a note placed carefully on top.

You wanted the truth about the boy.

May you like

Now come find him.
