Chapter 2: The Sealed Identity

The photograph remained on the screen long after Sarah finished reading the words.

BIRTH RECORD: CONFIDENTIAL IDENTITY SEALED.

A hospital stamp crossed the corner of the faded paper. The edges were yellow with age, but the tiny footprint in dark ink remained unmistakably clear.

Sarah looked up.

"What does this mean?"

Julian's jaw tightened.

"It means someone has been watching us."

He immediately handed the phone to one of his security officers.

"Trace the message."

The man nodded.

"Yes, sir."

Less than a minute later he returned.

"It bounced through twelve encrypted servers. Disposable number. Whoever sent it knew exactly how to disappear."

Julian wasn't surprised.

"They wanted us to see it."

"Nothing more."

Sarah couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes she saw Leo's bruises.

His frightened face.

His tiny voice saying...

"Sometimes Aunt Eleanor locked me in the attic."

The words echoed inside her mind.

Near midnight she quietly walked down the hallway toward Leo's room.

The bedroom door was slightly open.

Inside, Julian sat beside the bed.

He wasn't reading.

He wasn't using his phone.

He simply watched over the sleeping child.

Sarah stopped at the doorway.

"You've been here the whole time?"

Julian nodded.

"He had nightmares."

As if hearing them, Leo shifted beneath the blankets.

His breathing became uneven.

"No..."

"No..."

Julian gently rested a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"You're safe."

Leo slowly relaxed.

Sarah had never seen anything like it.

The child trusted Julian instinctively.

Almost as though...

He already knew him.

The following morning...

Hart Manor awoke before sunrise.

Security around the estate had doubled overnight.

Black SUVs lined the driveway.

Several guards carried discreet earpieces while monitoring every entrance.

Sarah frowned.

"This seems excessive."

Julian adjusted his cufflinks.

"No."

His answer came without emotion.

"It's necessary."

A moment later another security officer approached carrying a tablet.

"Sir."

"The overnight investigation is complete."

Julian motioned for him to continue.

"We reviewed Eleanor's financial records."

"And?"

"Large transfers."

Sarah leaned forward.

"How large?"

"Nearly four million dollars over the last six years."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"Source?"

"We don't know."

"But every payment came through shell companies."

Sarah stared.

"Eleanor doesn't have that kind of money."

"Exactly."

Someone had been funding her.

For years.

Breakfast ended quickly.

Before anyone could leave the dining room, another guard hurried inside.

"Sir."

Julian looked up.

"We found something else."

The guard placed a worn leather folder on the table.

"It was recovered from Eleanor's abandoned car after the arrest."

Inside were dozens of papers.

Medical records.

School reports.

Legal correspondence.

Most of it concerned Leo.

Sarah's hands shook as she flipped through the pages.

Then she froze.

"What..."

She slowly removed a folded document.

Across the top it read:

PETITION TO TERMINATE PARENTAL RIGHTS

She couldn't breathe.

Her name appeared in bold letters.

Applicant:

Eleanor Whitmore

Respondent:

Sarah Bennett

Status:

Prepared. Not Yet Filed.

Sarah's voice barely existed.

"She was planning to erase me."

Julian quietly read the rest.

Then his expression hardened.

"No."

He turned another page.

"She wasn't planning."

He looked directly at Sarah.

"She was waiting."

"For what?"

Julian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he removed one final envelope hidden beneath the documents.

Unlike the others...

This one had never been opened.

Only four handwritten words appeared on the front.

Open after transfer.

Sarah whispered,

"Transfer?"

Julian carefully opened the envelope.

Inside...

There was only a single photograph.

It showed Leo.

He couldn't have been older than three.

He stood beside Eleanor outside an unfamiliar building.

Behind them was a brass sign.

ST. GABRIEL CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

On the back someone had written one sentence.

The exchange happened here.

Julian immediately called his head of intelligence.

"I want every record connected to St. Gabriel Children's Hospital."

"Especially anything from seven years ago."

The man hesitated.

"Sir..."

"That hospital closed."

"When?"

"Six years ago."

"Fire."

Sarah looked up sharply.

"A fire?"

The officer nodded.

"The entire archive was destroyed."

Julian slowly leaned back in his chair.

"Convenient."

Meanwhile...

Across the city...

Eleanor sat alone inside a holding cell.

Her expensive clothes had been replaced by a plain gray uniform.

The confident smile she wore at the mansion had vanished.

A guard approached.

"You have a visitor."

"I didn't request one."

"He says you'll want to see him."

A tall man in an immaculate navy suit entered the interview room.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Cold blue eyes.

He placed a leather briefcase on the table.

Eleanor immediately stood.

"You took your time."

The man ignored the complaint.

"Did anyone mention the birth record?"

She swallowed.

"No."

"The boy?"

"He remembers nothing."

The man finally looked at her.

"You failed."

"They have him now."

"I know."

His voice remained perfectly calm.

"Which means Phase Two begins."

Eleanor's confidence returned.

"They'll never find the originals."

"No."

The man smiled faintly.

"They'll find exactly what we want them to find."

He slid a small key across the table.

"Storage Unit 214."

"Everything inside must disappear tonight."

Eleanor frowned.

"I can't leave jail."

"You won't need to."

He stood.

"I have people."

As he reached the door, he paused without turning around.

"If Julian discovers who Leo really is..."

"...everything we've built over the last eight years collapses."

Then he walked away.

Eleanor watched him disappear down the corridor.

For the first time in years...

She looked genuinely afraid.

That same evening...

Inside Hart Manor...

Julian received another call.

His security chief sounded unusually tense.

"Sir."

"We have a problem."

Julian immediately stood.

"What happened?"

"One of our surveillance teams followed an unknown vehicle leaving the courthouse."

"And?"

"It went directly to an abandoned warehouse district."

Julian's instincts sharpened.

"What did they find?"

The answer came after several seconds of silence.

"Storage Unit 214."

Julian's eyes widened.

"Go on."

"It was already burning."

By the time firefighters forced open the steel doors...

Everything inside had been reduced to ashes.

Burned filing cabinets.

Melted hard drives.

Charred cardboard boxes.

The destruction had been thorough.

Almost perfect.

Almost.

One firefighter carefully stepped through the wreckage.

"Captain!"

He bent down beside a partially collapsed metal cabinet.

Hidden beneath twisted steel...

A small fireproof lockbox had survived.

Its exterior was blackened.

But intact.

Julian arrived twenty minutes later.

A firefighter handed him the box.

"The lock melted."

"We didn't open it."

Julian slowly lifted the lid.

Inside...

There was only one object.

A tiny silver baby bracelet.

The engraving was still perfectly readable.

Not Leo.

Not any surname.

Just a date...

And a single word.

BABY JONAH

Sarah stared at the bracelet in confusion.

"But..."

"Leo's name isn't Jonah."

Julian didn't answer.

Because tucked beneath the bracelet...

Was another folded note.

Written in the same handwriting as the mysterious message.

It contained only eight chilling words.

May you like

Leo was never the child you believed survived.
