Chapter 10: The Woman Behind The Name

The room became unbearably quiet.
Leo's words hung in the air.
"She said she had to become Sarah."
Sarah stared at the child.
Her face was pale.
Her mind was desperately trying to reject what she had just heard.
"No..."
Her voice cracked.
"No, that doesn't make sense."
She looked at Daniel.
"Tell me this isn't possible."
Daniel didn't answer.
And that terrified her more than anything.
Julian immediately moved into action.
He closed the bedroom door.
"No one leaves."
His security instincts took over.
A threat that could imitate identities wasn't a normal enemy.
It was something far more dangerous.
A person who didn't need to destroy your life.
They could simply replace it.
"Leo."
Julian knelt beside him.
"I need you to think carefully."
The boy nodded.
"What exactly did Eleanor say?"
Leo squeezed his blanket.
"She was angry."
"She was talking to Victor."
"He told her she failed."
Sarah swallowed.
"Failed at what?"
Leo looked at her.
"At becoming you."
Sarah felt like the ground disappeared beneath her.
"Becoming me..."
She whispered the words.
Then suddenly...
A memory appeared.
Not a complete memory.
Just a fragment.
A hospital hallway.
A woman crying.
A voice saying:
"You need to forget this."
Sarah grabbed her head.
Julian immediately noticed.
"Sarah?"
She closed her eyes.
"I..."
She struggled to breathe.
"I remember something."
Everyone became still.
"What?"
Sarah looked terrified.
"Someone told me my memories were wrong."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
A pause.
"But I remember a woman."
"What woman?"
Sarah opened her eyes.
"She looked exactly like me."
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
Sophia.
Sarah's twin.
The woman who supposedly died.
But if Sophia survived...
Then who was the woman Sarah had been seeing all these years?
Julian ordered a complete background investigation.
Not only of Eleanor.
Not only of Victor.
Of Sarah.
Her childhood.
Her records.
Her medical history.
Everything.
Hours later...
The results arrived.
And they were impossible.
The security analyst looked uncomfortable.
"Sir..."
"Say it."
The man placed the documents on the table.
"Sarah Bennett's records have inconsistencies."
Julian scanned the pages.
"What kind?"
"School records from before age twelve."
"Medical records."
"Birth certificate."
"They all exist..."
A pause.
"But they were created at different times."
Sarah frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The analyst looked at her.
"It means someone rebuilt your identity."
Daniel slowly sat down.
"So Victor didn't just erase Leo."
Julian nodded.
"He erased Sarah too."
Sarah looked at Leo.
Her eyes filled with pain.
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Until Clara spoke.
"Because Victor needed someone close to Leo."
Everyone turned.
Clara continued.
"Sophia was supposed to protect Leo."
"When Victor couldn't control her..."
"He removed her."
"But Leo still needed a mother figure."
Sarah's expression changed.
"No..."
Clara nodded.
"Eleanor wasn't chosen randomly."
"She was trained."
Julian's face hardened.
"Trained to imitate Sarah."
"Yes."
"For seven years?"
"Yes."
Sarah stepped back.
"Then..."
She looked at Leo.
"Every memory he has of me..."
Clara interrupted gently.
"No."
"Your memories with Leo are real."
Sarah looked confused.
"Then how?"
"Because Victor didn't replace you."
"He created a second version."
The truth was worse than they imagined.
Victor didn't steal Sarah's life.
He created a fake Sarah.
A woman who looked like her.
A woman who carried false documents.
A woman who could enter Leo's world.
But somewhere along the way...
The real Sarah had survived.
And Victor lost control.
That evening...
Julian received a message.
A video file.
No sender.
No explanation.
He opened it.
The screen showed a young Leo.
Around three years old.
He sat in a room.
Crying.
A woman stood beside him.
At first glance...
Sarah.
But Julian immediately knew.
Something was wrong.
The woman's eyes were cold.
Not Sarah.
Eleanor.
The fake Sarah.
The recording continued.
Eleanor knelt.
"Listen carefully."
Young Leo looked afraid.
"You need to forget your old life."
The child cried.
"I want Mommy."
Eleanor smiled.
"I am Mommy."
"No."
The boy shook his head.
"My mommy has different eyes."
The room went silent.
Even Victor's people hadn't expected a three-year-old to notice.
Eleanor's expression changed.
She grabbed his arm.
"Don't say that."
The video ended.
Sarah covered her mouth.
"He remembered."
Julian nodded.
"Even then."
Daniel looked furious.
"She abused him because he knew."
Leo looked down.
"I thought I was wrong."
Sarah immediately hugged him.
"You were never wrong."
A few hours later...
Julian stood alone in his office.
He replayed the video.
Over and over.
Something bothered him.
A detail.
A small detail.
He paused the frame.
The background.
A painting.
A bookshelf.
A window.
Then he noticed something.
A symbol carved into the wall.
The same silver cross.
The Silver Covenant.
Julian's expression changed.
"This wasn't just Victor."
He called Clara.
She answered immediately.
"You found it."
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"Tell me the truth."
A long silence.
Then Clara said:
"The Silver Covenant helped Victor."
Julian's eyes narrowed.
"You said they protected people."
"They do."
"Then why help him?"
Clara's voice became quiet.
"Because someone higher than Victor ordered it."
Julian stood.
"Higher?"
"Yes."
"Someone who controls the Covenant."
"Someone who has been watching this entire situation."
"Who?"
Clara hesitated.
Then whispered:
"The person who created the identity replacement program."
Before Julian could respond...
Every screen inside his office turned on.
The television.
The computer.
The security monitors.
All displaying the same image.
A person sitting in darkness.
Face hidden.
A distorted voice spoke.
"Julian Hart."
Everyone in the mansion froze.
The voice continued.
"You spent your life protecting people from enemies you could see."
A pause.
"But this time..."
The figure leaned forward.
"Your enemy has been standing beside you from the beginning."
Sarah looked around.
Confused.
Afraid.
The voice continued:
"Ask Daniel Cross."
The screen flickered.
"Ask Clara."
Another flicker.
"Ask yourself..."
The figure finally revealed a small part of their face.
"Who helped you find the boy?"
Julian's expression changed.
Because the question wasn't an accusation.
It was a warning.
The screen went black.
And then a final message appeared.
TRUST NO ONE.
Minutes later...
Julian gathered everyone.
Daniel.
Sarah.
Clara.
The security team.
Nobody spoke.
Because the message had planted one terrible idea.
Someone in their group might be working for the enemy.
Julian looked around the room.
Then his eyes stopped.
On one person.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
Someone who always knew more than they revealed.
Clara.
Her expression changed.
"You think it's me."
Julian didn't answer.
Because at that moment...
The security alarm activated.
A guard rushed in.
"Sir!"
"We found something."
"What?"
The guard looked at Clara.
Then at Julian.
"Her fingerprints were found inside Victor Blackwell's private archive."
Silence.
Sarah stepped back.
Daniel stared.
Clara closed her eyes.
And whispered:
May you like
"I was hoping you would never find that."
