Chapter 14: The Father Behind The Curtain

The screen went black.

But nobody moved.

The image of the old man remained burned into Julian's mind.

The voice.

The face.

The impossible truth.

His father was alive.

And he had been watching everything.

For years.

Sarah looked at Julian.

"Are you okay?"

Julian didn't answer.

Because for the first time in his life...

He didn't know what emotion he was feeling.

Anger?

Betrayal?

Relief?

A son who spent decades believing he had lost his father was suddenly faced with the reality that his father had never truly left.

He had simply hidden.

Like everyone else.

Adrian broke the silence.

"His name is Richard Hart."

Julian turned sharply.

"You knew?"

Adrian nodded.

"I found him years ago."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he made me promise."

Julian laughed quietly.

But there was no humor in it.

"Another promise."

"Everyone keeps making promises."

"Everyone keeps hiding things."

He looked around the room.

"And somehow, I'm always the last person to know."

Richard Hart.

The man who created the foundation of the Hart family.

The man Julian believed had died before he could say goodbye.

The man who secretly created the identity system that had destroyed and rebuilt countless lives.

Julian couldn't understand.

Why?

Why would his own father do this?

Three hours later...

They found Richard's location.

Not because he wanted to be found.

Because he allowed them to.

A remote estate hidden deep in the mountains.

No guards.

No weapons.

No traps.

That alone made Julian suspicious.

A person who spent decades hiding did not suddenly become careless.

The group entered the old house.

The interior was surprisingly simple.

No luxury.

No signs of wealth.

Only books.

Thousands of books.

History.

Psychology.

Philosophy.

Human behavior.

Sarah looked around.

"This doesn't look like the home of a criminal."

Julian answered quietly:

"Sometimes the most dangerous people don't look dangerous."

At the end of the hallway...

A door opened.

An elderly man stood there.

Richard Hart.

Older than Julian remembered.

Much older.

His hair was completely gray.

His face carried years of regret.

But his eyes...

Julian recognized them immediately.

The same eyes he saw every morning in the mirror.

Neither man spoke.

Then Richard whispered:

"Julian."

The sound of his name almost broke something inside him.

Because he had imagined this moment many times.

But never like this.

"You let me believe you were dead."

Julian's voice was controlled.

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because if you knew I was alive..."

"You would have searched for me."

"And Victor would have found you."

Julian stepped closer.

"You keep saying Victor."

"But you created this."

Richard looked down.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised everyone.

"I created the system."

Sarah stared.

"The identity program."

Richard nodded.

"At first, it was created to protect innocent people."

"Victims of powerful enemies."

"Witnesses."

"People who needed a second chance."

Daniel crossed his arms.

"And then Victor corrupted it."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Julian looked around the room.

"Why did you involve me?"

Richard looked at him.

"Because I knew what kind of man you would become."

Julian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Power changes people."

"Money changes people."

"Fear changes people."

Richard's voice became softer.

"But you were different."

"You always protected people who had nothing to offer you."

Julian remained silent.

Richard continued:

"When Victor wanted to control the program..."

"I realized the only person who could stop him was someone who understood the value of a human life."

Sarah stepped forward.

"Then why didn't you stop him yourself?"

Richard looked at her.

"Because I failed."

The answer was immediate.

No excuse.

No defense.

"I created a machine."

"And Victor turned it into a weapon."

Daniel looked at Richard.

"What happened to Sophia?"

Richard's face changed.

Pain appeared.

"I tried to save her."

"But Victor moved faster."

"And Leo?"

Richard looked toward the child.

"I tried to hide him."

"But Victor found him."

Leo stared at the old man.

"Did you know my mom?"

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"She was one of the bravest people I ever met."

Leo looked down.

"Then why did everyone leave?"

That question destroyed Richard.

The old man sat down slowly.

"I don't have a good answer."

A pause.

"Sometimes adults create complicated plans..."

"And forget that children are the ones who suffer."

Julian looked at his father.

"Victor said you started everything."

Richard nodded.

"He's right."

"Then what is the truth?"

Richard stood.

"The truth is that Victor is not the final enemy."

Everyone became alert.

Again.

Another hidden layer.

Richard walked toward a bookshelf.

He pulled out an old book.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small device.

A recording.

Richard placed it on the table.

"This is the original file."

Julian looked confused.

"Original file?"

"The first identity project."

"Created thirty years ago."

Richard pressed play.

A woman's voice appeared.

Everyone froze.

Because they recognized it.

Sophia.

But she sounded older.

"If someone finds this recording..."

"It means the system failed."

"Victor was never the only threat."

"There was someone above him."

Julian looked at Richard.

The old man lowered his eyes.

Sophia's voice continued:

"The person controlling everything is not interested in money."

"They are interested in controlling human choices."

A pause.

"They believe people can be redesigned."

The recording ended.

Silence.

Then Richard spoke.

"Victor was a student."

"Not a leader."

Sarah whispered:

"Then who was his teacher?"

Richard looked at Julian.

"The person who taught Victor everything."

"Who?"

Richard answered:

"Your grandfather."

Nobody moved.

Julian's expression changed.

"My grandfather?"

Richard nodded.

"The Hart family didn't build its fortune only through business."

"We built influence."

"Connections."

"Information."

"The identity system was originally created by your grandfather decades ago."

Julian stared.

"So this started before me."

"Before Victor."

"Before Leo."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

That night...

Julian walked alone outside the estate.

The entire world he knew had collapsed.

His family.

His history.

His purpose.

Everything connected to one question.

How many lives had been changed because of his family's decisions?

Sarah found him.

"You blame yourself."

Julian didn't deny it.

"My family created this."

"Your family did."

She looked at him.

"But you didn't."

Julian looked away.

"How do you know?"

Sarah smiled sadly.

"Because when you had every reason to walk away..."

"You stayed."

She glanced toward the house.

"You chose Leo."

"You chose us."

Inside the house...

Richard sat alone.

Looking at an old photograph.

A younger version of himself.

His wife.

His children.

Then his eyes stopped on one person.

Julian.

He whispered:

"I'm sorry."

A shadow appeared behind him.

Richard froze.

A familiar voice spoke.

"You finally told him."

Richard slowly turned.

Victor Blackwell stood in the doorway.

But he wasn't angry.

He was calm.

Almost satisfied.

"You should have known, Richard."

"Secrets always return."

Richard stared.

"You followed us."

Victor smiled.

"No."

"I was invited."

Richard frowned.

"By who?"

Victor looked toward the hallway.

A figure stepped forward.

Someone nobody expected.

Someone who had been missing since the beginning.

Someone who knew every secret.

Every identity.

Every lie.

Victor smiled.

"Meet the person who wrote the first rule."

The figure stepped into the light.

And Julian's world shattered again.

Because standing there...

Was Sophia Bennett.

May you like

Alive.
