CHAPTER 10 THE FATHER WHO WAS ERASED

CHAPTER 10

THE FATHER WHO WAS ERASED

Darkness.

Absolute darkness.

For one terrifying moment...

Emily believed it was over.

The explosion.

The station.

Her children.

Everything.

Then...

A sound.

A low mechanical hum.

The lights returned.

One by one.

The countdown screen flickered.

00:00

Everyone waited for the blast.

Nothing happened.

No fire.

No collapse.

No destruction.

Only silence.

Daniel slowly lowered his weapon.

"What just happened?"

Arthur stared at the control panel.

His face was pale.

"The countdown was never a bomb."

Emily looked at him.

"Then what was it?"

Arthur swallowed.

"A test."

The massive screen above them activated again.

Harold Bennett appeared.

Calm.

Unharmed.

Almost amused.

"Congratulations."

Emily stepped forward.

"You planned all of this."

Harold nodded.

"Yes."

"You let me believe my children were dead."

His expression changed slightly.

Pain.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"I had to."

Emily's voice shook.

"No."

She held Lucas and Sophie's hands.

"You wanted me broken."

Harold looked at the children.

"I wanted you angry."

The answer shocked everyone.

"Why?"

"Because grief makes people obedient."

He paused.

"But anger..."

His eyes met Emily's.

"Anger makes people search."

Daniel moved toward the screen.

"Harold Bennett."

Harold looked at him.

"Detective Hayes."

"You've been monitoring Emily for years."

"Yes."

"You built this entire operation."

"No."

A pause.

"I inherited it."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Harold leaned back.

"The Phoenix Council existed before me."

The room became quiet.

"My father served them."

"My grandfather served them."

"Generation after generation."

He looked at Emily.

"But I was the first person who tried to destroy it."

Emily stared.

"Then why hide everything?"

"Because the Council has eyes everywhere."

"Even in your own family?"

Harold smiled sadly.

"Especially there."

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A man standing beside Harold.

Younger.

Powerful.

Confident.

Emily recognized him immediately.

Her blood ran cold.

Her father.

But he looked different.

Not the loving man she remembered.

This version looked like someone else.

Someone dangerous.

Harold spoke.

"Your father was the architect."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"He created the Phoenix system."

"No."

"He designed the archives."

"No."

"He selected the families."

Emily covered her ears.

"Stop."

Harold continued.

"He created the program that erased memories."

Emily looked toward Arthur.

Then Helena.

Then Daniel.

Everyone remained silent.

Because none of them looked surprised.

Except Emily.

A memory suddenly hit her.

A small room.

A little girl.

Her father kneeling in front of her.

His face full of tears.

"Emily, listen to me."

Young Emily crying.

"Where's Mommy?"

Her father held her.

"She's gone."

"Did the bad people hurt her?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Yes."

Young Emily looked terrified.

Her father whispered:

"But someday..."

"...you will be strong enough to remember."

The memory vanished.

Emily staggered backward.

She grabbed the wall.

"My father..."

Arthur approached carefully.

"He wasn't the man you thought."

Emily looked at him.

"No."

Her voice became firm.

"He was."

Everyone stopped.

"He was my father."

She looked toward the screen.

"Whatever he did..."

"He loved me."

Harold said nothing.

Because he knew she was right.

Suddenly...

A warning appeared on the screen.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED

Daniel looked up.

"What now?"

Arthur rushed toward the terminal.

"No."

"What?"

Arthur's hands moved quickly across the controls.

"The Phoenix Council has breached the outer systems."

Harold's expression changed.

For the first time...

Fear appeared.

Not for himself.

For Emily.

"They found us."

The station shook.

But not from an explosion.

From movement.

Something massive was opening above them.

Daniel looked at the ceiling.

"What is that?"

Arthur answered:

"The original chamber."

Emily frowned.

"The original?"

Arthur nodded.

"Blackhaven was built beneath something much older."

"Older than the station?"

"Yes."

"How old?"

Arthur looked at Harold's image.

Then at Emily.

"Older than your family."

A section of the platform floor opened.

A hidden elevator rose from below.

Inside stood a single person.

Everyone raised weapons.

The figure stepped forward.

Slowly.

An old man.

White hair.

Scar across his face.

Wearing the same phoenix ring.

Emily froze.

Because she recognized him.

Not from photographs.

Not from memories.

From dreams.

The same face that appeared every night since childhood.

The man standing in the fire.

Her father had told her he was a nightmare.

A forgotten memory.

But he was real.

The man looked at Emily.

And smiled.

"My daughter."

Emily couldn't breathe.

Harold looked away.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Daniel whispered:

"Impossible..."

The man walked forward.

"Twenty-four years."

He looked at Lucas and Sophie.

"Your children are beautiful."

Emily stepped in front of them.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"You already know."

"No."

"Yes."

He touched the phoenix ring.

"I am the man your father tried to erase."

A pause.

"The man your mother died protecting you from."

Emily's hands tightened.

"My father?"

The man's smile widened.

"Finally."

He looked around the station.

"The family reunion can begin."

Harold's voice suddenly came through the speakers.

"Emily."

She looked up.

"Don't listen to him."

The mysterious man laughed.

"Still protecting her?"

Harold answered coldly.

"Always."

The man turned toward the camera.

"You never understood, Harold."

"What?"

"She was never your responsibility."

He looked back at Emily.

"She belongs to me."

The lights changed.

Every monitor in Blackhaven activated.

Thousands of files appeared.

Every photograph.

Every secret.

Every hidden record.

Then one final file appeared.

PROJECT DAUGHTER

Emily stared.

The file opened automatically.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby.

A note underneath:

Subject: Emily Voss-Bennett-Carter

Purpose: Final Successor

Status: Activated

Emily felt dizzy.

Three surnames.

Voss.

Bennett.

Carter.

Her entire life was connected.

The mysterious man looked at her.

"You spent your whole life searching for the truth."

He smiled.

"But the truth is..."

"You were created for this."

Emily whispered:

"No."

The man stepped closer.

"Yes."

"And now..."

His eyes moved toward Lucas and Sophie.

"The next generation begins."

Suddenly, Daniel's radio crackled.

A voice came through.

One he recognized.

Captain Olivia Grant.

But something was wrong.

Her voice sounded different.

Controlled.

Cold.

"Detective Hayes."

Daniel grabbed the radio.

"Olivia?"

A pause.

Then:

"You need to leave Blackhaven immediately."

"Where are you?"

Another pause.

"I'm sorry."

Static.

Then one final sentence:

"The Phoenix Council has already won."

The radio went silent.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

Everyone heard it.

Footsteps.

Hundreds of them.

Approaching.

The doors began opening.

Emily held her children closer.

Harold looked at her.

Arthur reached for a weapon.

The mysterious man smiled.

And from the darkness outside...

May you like

The Phoenix Council entered.
