CHAPTER 2 THE TEN-MINUTE COUNTDOWN

CHAPTER 2
THE TEN-MINUTE COUNTDOWN
The electronic beeping cut through the silence like a heartbeat.
09:58
...
09:57
Every flashlight immediately swung toward the old wooden desk.
Detective Daniel Hayes raised his hand.
"Nobody move."
The tactical officers froze exactly where they stood.
The concrete floor beneath them vibrated again.
Not violently.
Just enough to tell everyone the sound wasn't coming from inside the room.
It was coming from below it.
Daniel crouched.
He pressed two fingers against the dusty floor.
Another vibration.
Another beep.
The countdown continued.
09:42
Forensic Officer Melissa Carter swallowed.
"Bomb squad?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
He looked around the storage unit.
Nothing made sense.
There were no visible wires.
No explosives.
No suspicious containers.
No chemical smell.
No recent footprints.
Everything inside looked untouched for years.
Except...
The countdown.
Someone had activated it.
Recently.
Very recently.
Daniel stood.
"Everybody out."
No one argued.
Within seconds the storage unit emptied.
Outside, rain poured harder.
Blue emergency lights reflected off the wet pavement.
The Bomb Disposal Unit was already racing toward the facility.
Daniel looked back at Unit 17.
The steel door remained open.
Dark.
Silent.
Waiting.
He had investigated enough organized crime to recognize one thing.
Real criminal organizations rarely protected money with explosives.
They protected secrets.
Across town...
Emily sat in Richard Lawson's office, unable to take her eyes off the notebooks her father had left behind.
Each page revealed another unexplained death.
Another insurance claim.
Another sudden inheritance.
Another member of the Bennett family becoming wealthier.
At first the pattern looked random.
Then Richard opened a ledger from fifteen years earlier.
"This," he said quietly, "was the page your father obsessed over."
Emily leaned closer.
There were twenty-seven names.
Twenty-six had thick black lines drawn through them.
Only one remained untouched.
Harold Bennett.
Her father-in-law.
Emily frowned.
"He never suspected my husband?"
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"He believed Harold was the one giving the orders."
Emily's stomach tightened.
"But Mark looked terrified of Unit 17."
"Exactly."
Richard removed an old photograph from another folder.
It showed Harold nearly twenty years younger.
Standing beside several businessmen.
One face had been scratched completely away.
Someone had deliberately destroyed it.
Only the shoulders remained.
Richard pointed toward the damaged figure.
"Your father spent eight years trying to identify that man."
"Did he?"
"No."
"What happened?"
Richard looked toward the rain outside.
"He disappeared."
"You mean..."
"I mean everyone who knew his identity either died..."
"...or vanished."
County Jail.
Mark Bennett hadn't spoken for nearly an hour.
His attorney finally stood.
"I'm leaving."
Mark suddenly grabbed his sleeve.
"No."
"You've refused every question."
"They'll kill you."
"They?"
Mark's breathing became uneven.
"You think my father built this?"
The attorney remained silent.
Mark laughed bitterly.
"My father doesn't own the game."
"He only survived it."
Northgate Storage Facility.
The Bomb Squad arrived with six specialists.
Their commander, Captain Olivia Grant, entered Unit 17 wearing protective gear.
The timer still counted down.
07:11
She inspected the floor.
"No explosive residue."
She examined the walls.
"No pressure plates."
She scanned the room using thermal imaging.
Nothing.
No hidden devices.
No heat signatures.
No detonators.
Daniel frowned.
"Then what's making the timer?"
Olivia slowly walked toward the old desk.
The timer sat beneath it.
Bolted into place.
She carefully unscrewed the metal housing.
Inside...
There was almost nothing.
One battery.
One speaker.
One digital clock.
No explosive.
No wires leading anywhere.
She looked up.
"It's fake."
Daniel blinked.
"What?"
"The countdown isn't connected to anything."
"So why build it?"
Olivia stared around the room.
"To make everyone look at the clock..."
"...instead of somewhere else."
Daniel's eyes widened.
He spun around.
"Search everything."
The officers spread through the storage unit.
Every crate.
Every shelf.
Every wall.
Every ceiling beam.
Nothing.
Minutes passed.
Then Melissa stopped beside the concrete wall covered with names.
"Detective..."
Daniel walked over.
"What?"
She pointed at one of the painted names.
"Look closely."
The paint wasn't paint.
It only looked like paint from a distance.
Daniel ran a gloved finger across one letter.
The black coating peeled away.
Underneath...
Another layer appeared.
Numbers.
Hundreds of tiny handwritten numbers.
Every name concealed a bank account.
Melissa peeled another section.
More numbers.
Routing codes.
Transaction references.
Swiss accounts.
Offshore companies.
Daniel immediately understood.
The wall wasn't a memorial.
It was a financial ledger.
Every death...
Every payment...
Every transfer...
Recorded in plain sight.
Hidden beneath black paint.
Emily's phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
She hesitated.
Richard nodded.
"Answer it."
She pressed the speaker button.
Silence.
Then...
A little girl's voice.
Barely above a whisper.
"Mommy..."
Emily froze.
Impossible.
Her daughter...
Sophie...
Had been buried that morning.
Tears instantly filled her eyes.
"...Soph?"
Static.
Then the voice spoke again.
"They're lying."
Emily stood so quickly her chair fell backward.
"Who is this?"
"You have to find the train."
Richard's expression changed immediately.
"The train?" he asked.
Emily repeated the words.
"The train."
The voice continued.
"Grandpa said..."
Static interrupted the sentence.
"...red door..."
"...don't trust..."
More static.
"...Harold..."
The line went dead.
Emily stared at the silent phone.
Her entire body shook.
Richard slowly reached for the device.
"May I?"
She handed it over.
He checked the caller information.
Nothing.
No number.
No location.
No record.
As if the call had never existed.
At the storage unit...
Daniel continued examining the wall.
One transaction caught his attention.
Date:
March 18th, 2009
Recipient:
Carter Family Trust
Amount:
$4,800,000
Daniel frowned.
Emily's family.
Why would the Bennett organization transfer millions of dollars to her father?
Melissa uncovered another hidden note beneath the account number.
Written in red ink.
PAID TO REMAIN SILENT
Daniel's heartbeat accelerated.
Had Emily's father accepted the money?
Or had someone framed him?
Before he could answer his own question, another officer shouted from the back of the storage room.
"Detective!"
Daniel hurried over.
The officer stood beside an old filing cabinet hidden beneath a tarp.
Every drawer was empty.
Except the last one.
Inside rested a single VHS cassette.
Covered in dust.
A handwritten label read:
FUNERAL ONE
Daniel stared at it.
"One?"
The officer nodded.
"There are no others."
Daniel looked back toward the wall of names.
Then toward the tape.
Then at the countdown clock.
It reached zero.
00:00
Nothing exploded.
Instead...
A mechanical click echoed somewhere deep beneath the concrete.
Everyone fell silent.
Another click.
Then another.
A section of the floor slowly shifted sideways.
Dust rose into the air.
Hidden beneath Unit 17...
A narrow staircase descended into complete darkness.
Cold air drifted upward.
It carried the unmistakable smell of damp earth...
And something much older.
Daniel shined his flashlight downward.
The beam disappeared before reaching the bottom.
Then...
From somewhere in the darkness...
A man's calm voice echoed upward.
"You shouldn't have come."
Every officer raised their weapons.
The voice continued.
"I've been expecting you for twenty-three years."
The flashlight beam trembled slightly as Daniel took the first step down.
Behind him, every officer followed.
None of them noticed...
A tiny hidden camera tucked into the ceiling corner.
Its red recording light blinked once.
Somewhere far away...
A computer screen showed the live feed.
An elderly man watched silently.
Harold Bennett smiled.
Then reached for a telephone.
"Activate Phase Two."
The person on the other end answered with only four words.
May you like
"She's coming exactly as planned."
