CHAPTER 7 THE MAN BEHIND THE GLASS

CHAPTER 7
THE MAN BEHIND THE GLASS
Darkness swallowed the station.
For several endless seconds...
Emily heard only chaos.
Children crying.
Metal doors slamming.
Footsteps running in every direction.
Somewhere beyond the armored glass, Lucas pounded both fists against the barrier.
"Mom!"
Emily slammed her palms against the glass.
"I'm here! I'm here!"
The barrier didn't move.
It was thick enough to stop bullets.
Too thick to break.
A deep mechanical voice echoed through hidden speakers.
SECURITY PROTOCOL OMEGA ACTIVATED.
PRIMARY ASSET HAS ARRIVED.
ALL PERSONNEL TO DESIGNATED POSITIONS.
Emily froze.
Primary Asset.
The same words Detective Hayes had found inside her file.
Someone had been expecting her.
Not today.
For years.
Emergency lights slowly flickered back on.
Red.
Cold.
Unforgiving.
The station looked completely different now.
What had seemed like an abandoned underground platform suddenly came alive.
Steel blast doors had sealed every exit.
Hidden cameras rotated toward Emily.
Armed guards in gray uniforms emerged from concealed corridors.
Yet none of them pointed their weapons at her.
Instead...
They formed a circle.
Protecting her.
From something else.
Emily shouted,
"Where are my children?"
No one answered.
One guard quietly spoke into his earpiece.
"Subject Seven is awake."
Subject Seven?
Emily looked around.
"Who are you talking about?"
Again...
Silence.
Hundreds of miles away...
Detective Daniel Hayes replayed the strange VHS tape for the tenth time.
The timestamp still made no sense.
The date preceded Sophie's birth by nearly twenty years.
Melissa entered carrying a report from the forensic video lab.
"They finished."
Daniel looked up.
"And?"
"They're certain."
"The tape wasn't edited."
Daniel frowned.
"No digital manipulation?"
"It's not digital."
"What about analog tampering?"
Melissa slowly shook her head.
"The tape is original."
Daniel stared at the frozen image.
A newborn baby.
Doctors.
Hidden voices.
An impossible date.
One line echoed in his mind.
Erase today's memory.
Meanwhile...
Harold Bennett sat alone in his operations room.
The woman standing beside him watched the surveillance feed nervously.
"Lockdown is complete."
Harold nodded.
"And Emily?"
"She's separated from the children."
He closed his eyes.
"Good."
The woman hesitated.
"They'll hate us."
Harold looked toward the monitor.
Lucas sat crying behind the glass.
Sophie held his hand.
Harold whispered,
"I know."
Then, almost too quietly to hear,
"But they'll be alive to hate us."
Back at Blackhaven Terminal...
A door at the far end of the platform slowly opened.
Not with violence.
With ceremony.
A single man walked toward Emily.
Mid-sixties.
Silver hair.
Perfect black suit.
No weapon.
No fear.
The guards immediately stepped aside.
Emily had never seen him before.
Yet something about him felt strangely familiar.
He stopped a few feet away.
"My name is Arthur Voss."
Emily glared at him.
"I don't care."
"I imagine not."
"Where are my children?"
"They're safe."
"I've heard that lie enough."
Arthur sighed.
"It isn't a lie."
Emily stepped closer.
"Then let me hold them."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because the moment they leave this station..."
"...someone will kill them."
Emily's anger turned to disbelief.
"Who?"
Arthur answered immediately.
"The people who murdered the children buried in their place."
Silence.
The words settled like stones.
Emily whispered,
"So those children..."
Arthur nodded.
"They had names."
"They had families."
"They died so yours could disappear."
Emily felt sick.
"I don't understand."
"You will."
Arthur motioned toward a nearby room.
"Walk with me."
"I'm not going anywhere."
Arthur smiled sadly.
"You already have."
The room beyond resembled an old library.
Thousands of books lined the walls.
Maps covered long tables.
Photographs stretched across corkboards.
At the center stood an enormous family tree.
Not of one family.
Of dozens.
Red strings connected names across generations.
Emily immediately recognized one branch.
The Bennett Family.
Another branch.
The Carter Family.
They were connected.
Not by marriage.
By blood.
Emily stared.
"That's impossible."
Arthur quietly removed one photograph.
It showed Emily's father as a young man.
Standing beside Harold Bennett.
They weren't enemies.
They were smiling.
Friends.
Emily shook her head.
"No..."
Arthur handed her another photograph.
This one showed her father holding baby Lucas.
Harold stood beside him.
Again...
Smiling.
Emily whispered,
"My father hated Harold."
Arthur looked directly into her eyes.
"No."
"He pretended to."
At Police Headquarters...
Daniel finally received permission to examine Emily's father's safety deposit box.
It had remained untouched since his death.
Inside lay only three objects.
An old revolver.
A sealed envelope.
A cassette recorder.
Daniel pressed Play.
Static filled the room.
Then a tired voice emerged.
Emily's father.
"If you're hearing this... I ran out of time."
Daniel listened carefully.
"You probably think Harold Bennett is the villain."
A pause.
"He's the reason my daughter is still alive."
Daniel looked at Melissa.
Neither spoke.
The recording continued.
"The real enemy has no surname."
"Only a symbol."
Paper rustled.
Then came six words that made Daniel's blood freeze.
"Find the woman with blue eyes."
The tape clicked off.
Melissa frowned.
"Who has blue eyes?"
Daniel slowly remembered the surveillance footage.
The woman who had been caring for Sophie.
The same woman who worked beside Harold.
Blue eyes.
Back inside Blackhaven...
Arthur led Emily into another chamber.
Unlike the rest of the station...
This room contained only one object.
A massive wall covered entirely with clocks.
Hundreds of them.
Each showing a different time.
Some moved normally.
Others had stopped years ago.
Arthur pointed toward one clock.
It had stopped exactly at 8:17 PM.
"What happened then?"
Emily asked.
Arthur answered quietly.
"That's when your first life ended."
Emily frowned.
"My first life?"
Arthur nodded.
"You've lived two."
Before she could ask another question...
Arthur reached beneath the clock and pressed a hidden switch.
A section of the wall silently slid open.
Behind it...
A hospital room appeared.
Not a recording.
An actual room.
Frozen in time.
Old medical equipment.
Yellowed curtains.
Dust everywhere.
On the bed lay a small pink backpack.
Emily slowly walked closer.
Her breathing became uneven.
She recognized it instantly.
It had been hers.
When she was six years old.
She reached into the backpack.
Inside rested a children's coloring book.
On the first page...
Crayon handwriting filled the paper.
Not a child's random scribbles.
A sentence.
Written by her own hand decades earlier.
"The fire wasn't an accident."
Emily's hands began to tremble.
She turned the page.
Another sentence.
"The man with the phoenix ring killed my mother."
Her heart pounded.
Another page.
"Dad says I must forget until I'm ready."
Emily stumbled backward.
She had no memory of writing any of it.
Yet she recognized the handwriting.
It was undeniably hers.
Arthur's voice broke the silence.
"You didn't lose your memories naturally."
Emily slowly looked at him.
"What are you saying?"
Arthur took a long breath.
"Twenty-four years ago..."
"...someone deliberately erased them."
Just then, every light in Blackhaven flickered violently.
Alarms erupted throughout the station.
A guard burst through the doorway.
His face was pale.
"They're inside!"
Arthur turned sharply.
"Who?"
The guard swallowed.
"The Phoenix Council."
Arthur's expression changed for the first time.
Fear.
Real fear.
"They found Blackhaven."
A deafening explosion echoed somewhere above the station.
Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.
Emergency lights shifted from red...
To flashing white.
A robotic announcement repeated through every corridor:
BREACH CONFIRMED.
EVACUATE ALL CHILDREN IMMEDIATELY.
Emily's first thought wasn't about the explosions.
It wasn't about Arthur.
It wasn't even about herself.
Only two names filled her mind.
Lucas.
Sophie.
She ran toward the door.
Behind her...
May you like
A second explosion shook the entire underground station.
