CHAPTER 6 THE PASSENGER IN SEAT SEVEN

CHAPTER 6
THE PASSENGER IN SEAT SEVEN
Darkness swallowed the carriage.
Only the rhythmic clatter of steel wheels echoed beneath the floor.
Emily's breathing became shallow.
The little voice came again.
"Mom..."
This time...
Closer.
She slowly turned toward the back of the carriage.
A small silhouette sat perfectly still in Seat Seven.
The emergency lights flickered once.
Then again.
A dim amber glow filled the compartment.
Emily's heart pounded.
"Lucas?"
The child stepped into the light.
Not Lucas.
Not Sophie.
A little girl, perhaps eight years old, wearing a faded blue coat and holding an old stuffed rabbit whose fur had nearly worn away.
She looked frightened.
But not surprised.
"You came," she whispered.
Emily stared.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Grace."
"Where are my children?"
Grace lowered her eyes.
"They're waiting."
"Waiting where?"
"The Last Platform."
Emily's pulse quickened.
"What is the Last Platform?"
Grace looked toward the front of the carriage as if afraid someone might overhear.
"It's where everyone who disappears goes."
Meanwhile...
Detective Daniel Hayes refused to believe the train had simply vanished.
The tunnel was barely eight hundred meters long.
Police units entered from both ends simultaneously.
Flashlights swept every inch of the rails.
No train.
No passengers.
No side tracks.
Nothing.
Captain Olivia Grant walked the entire tunnel herself.
"The locomotive couldn't have disappeared."
Daniel examined the tracks.
Fresh steel marks ended exactly halfway through the tunnel.
As though the train had ceased to exist.
Melissa crouched beside one rail.
"Detective..."
She pointed toward a thin brass object lying between the sleepers.
Daniel picked it up.
It was an old railway ticket.
Burned around the edges.
Across the front...
BLACKHAVEN TERMINAL
The destination matched the one Emily had received.
On the back was a handwritten note.
The tunnel isn't a place. It's a choice.
Inside Car 17...
The train continued through complete darkness.
Emily noticed something unsettling.
There were no windows anymore.
Where glass should have been...
Only polished black panels reflected her own face.
Grace sat quietly across from her.
"How long have you been here?" Emily asked.
The little girl shrugged.
"I don't know."
"Where are your parents?"
"They stopped looking."
Emily's heart sank.
"What do you mean?"
"They believed I died."
Silence settled between them.
Finally Grace asked,
"Did they bury your children?"
Emily nodded slowly.
Grace looked almost relieved.
"Then you still have time."
Emily leaned forward.
"What does that mean?"
Before Grace could answer...
The carriage speakers crackled.
A calm male voice echoed through the compartment.
"Good morning, passengers."
Emily froze.
She recognized the voice.
Harold Bennett.
"Welcome aboard the Phoenix Line."
Miles away...
Harold Bennett wasn't on any train.
He sat alone inside a secure operations room hidden beneath his estate.
Dozens of surveillance monitors covered one wall.
Most displayed static.
Only one showed the inside of Car 17.
Harold watched Emily silently.
A younger woman entered carrying a folder.
"They've entered the tunnel."
Harold nodded.
"How many recovered memories?"
"None."
"Not yet?"
She hesitated.
"No."
Harold closed his eyes briefly.
"Then she still believes she's an ordinary mother."
The woman looked confused.
"Should we tell her?"
Harold answered without hesitation.
"If she remembers too early..."
"...everyone dies."
Back on the train...
Harold's voice continued through the speakers.
"Emily..."
She looked upward.
"I know you have questions."
"You murdered my children!"
"No."
"You kidnapped them!"
Silence.
Then...
"I protected them."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"Protected them from what?"
Harold answered quietly.
"You."
The words hit harder than any scream.
Emily's face hardened.
"What?"
"You don't remember."
"I remember everything."
"No."
A long pause followed.
"You remember only what they allowed you to."
Detective Daniel returned to Unit 17.
Something about the underground archive still felt incomplete.
He ordered every shelf removed.
Hours later...
Behind the final row of cabinets...
Workers uncovered a concealed steel vault.
Unlike the archive room, this vault required both the brass key...
...and a fingerprint.
Olivia frowned.
"We don't have one."
Daniel looked toward the evidence bag containing Harold Bennett's coffee cup collected during a previous interview.
"Maybe we do."
Minutes later...
The scanner flashed green.
Access Granted.
The vault door slowly opened.
Inside...
No gold.
No cash.
Only hundreds of cassette tapes.
Each labeled with a woman's name.
And one date.
At the very back sat a small locked wooden box.
Daniel opened it.
Inside rested one VHS tape marked in thick black ink.
EMILY
Date:
August 14, 2002
A handwritten warning covered the case.
DO NOT PLAY UNLESS SHE REMEMBERS FIRST.
Melissa looked at Daniel.
"We're playing it."
Daniel hesitated.
Then nodded.
The tape rolled.
Static filled the screen.
Gradually, an image appeared.
A hospital delivery room.
Doctors rushed around a newborn baby.
The timestamp read:
August 14, 2002
Emily had been six years old.
That couldn't be right.
Then the camera shifted.
The newborn wasn't Emily.
It was...
Sophie.
Daniel frowned.
Impossible.
The date was decades too early.
The tape continued.
A doctor lifted the infant.
Another man entered the room.
His face remained hidden outside the frame.
Only his voice was heard.
"Subject Seven has arrived."
The doctor nodded.
"The mother doesn't know."
"Good."
"What about Emily?"
A long silence.
Then the hidden man answered.
"Erase today's memory."
Daniel's blood ran cold.
Erase?
The tape ended abruptly.
Every person in the room stood speechless.
Melissa whispered,
"This footage has to be fake."
Daniel wasn't so sure.
Inside Car 17...
The train finally slowed.
A bell rang somewhere ahead.
Grace stood.
"We're almost there."
Emily looked through one of the black panels.
For the first time...
It became transparent.
Outside lay an enormous underground station illuminated by thousands of antique lamps.
Dozens of children played along the platform.
Laughing.
Running.
Drawing with chalk.
None looked frightened.
None looked injured.
Every child had one thing in common.
Each wore a small metal tag around the neck.
Grace pointed toward them.
"They're all officially dead."
Emily's breath caught.
Then she saw two familiar figures near the far end of the platform.
A little boy chasing a little girl around an old wooden bench.
Lucas.
Sophie.
Alive.
Emily burst toward the carriage door.
"Lucas!"
The children stopped.
They turned.
Lucas's eyes widened.
"Mom!"
The train hadn't fully stopped before Emily reached the exit.
The doors slid open.
She ran onto the platform.
Lucas sprinted toward her with tears streaming down his face.
Only a few more steps...
Three...
Two...
One...
Then a loud mechanical alarm echoed through the station.
Every light instantly turned red.
A metallic voice announced:
MEMORY BREACH DETECTED.
LOCKDOWN INITIATED.
Heavy steel doors slammed shut across every tunnel.
The children froze.
Lucas looked terrified.
Sophie grabbed her brother's hand.
An unseen man shouted,
"Get them out of here!"
Emily reached desperately toward her children.
They reached toward her.
Only inches separated their fingertips...
Before an armored glass barrier exploded upward from the floor between them.
Emily screamed.
Lucas pressed both hands against the glass.
Tears rolled down his face.
"Mom..."
May you like
Then every light in the station went black.
