CHAPTER 8 THE PHOENIX COUNCIL ARRIVES

CHAPTER 8

THE PHOENIX COUNCIL ARRIVES

The underground station trembled.

Dust poured from the ceiling like gray snow.

The sound of explosions echoed through the tunnels.

One after another.

Closer.

Closer.

Emily ran.

Not away.

Toward her children.

Every instinct inside her screamed the same thing.

Find Lucas. Find Sophie.

Arthur Voss grabbed her arm before she reached the corridor.

"Wait."

She turned violently.

"Let go of me."

"If you go through that door now, you die."

"My children are there."

"And that's exactly why they'll use them."

Emily froze.

Arthur looked toward the flashing emergency lights.

"The Phoenix Council knows your weakness."

"My weakness?"

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Your love for them."

A massive security screen activated on the wall.

The image showed the main platform.

The children were being moved through an underground passage.

Lucas kept looking behind him.

Searching.

Calling silently for his mother.

Sophie held his hand tightly.

A group of guards surrounded them.

Then...

The image changed.

A new group appeared.

Not guards.

Not police.

Men and women wearing black clothing.

Each carried the same silver phoenix symbol.

At the center walked an elderly woman.

White hair.

Dark coat.

Calm expression.

Arthur's face changed instantly.

"No..."

Emily noticed.

"Who is she?"

Arthur whispered:

"Helena Voss."

Emily frowned.

"Your wife?"

Arthur nodded slowly.

"My former wife."

The woman on the screen stopped.

She looked directly into the camera.

As if she knew someone was watching.

Then she smiled.

The speakers activated.

A woman's voice filled the station.

"Arthur."

Everyone froze.

Helena continued.

"You always were sentimental."

Arthur stepped toward the screen.

"Let the children go."

A quiet laugh.

"You still believe this is about children."

"What is it about?"

The woman's smile disappeared.

"Completion."

Emily stepped closer.

"Who are you?"

Helena looked toward the camera.

For several seconds...

Nothing.

Then she answered.

"I am the person who has been protecting your family for twenty-four years."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"Protecting?"

"You have no idea what your father started."

"My father tried to stop you."

"No."

Helena shook her head.

"Your father created this."

The screen went black.

Arthur immediately turned toward Emily.

"We need to move."

She didn't move.

"What did she mean?"

Arthur hesitated.

"Emily..."

"What did she mean?"

Before he could answer...

A gunshot echoed from the corridor.

Everyone turned.

A guard fell.

The Phoenix Council had reached them.

Daniel Hayes was closer than anyone realized.

After tracing the Blackhaven railway records, he had discovered an abandoned maintenance tunnel connected to the old station.

He entered with Olivia and six officers.

No lights.

No sound.

Only darkness.

Then they heard the explosion.

Daniel raised his weapon.

"Everyone ready."

Olivia whispered,

"Who are we fighting?"

Daniel looked ahead.

"I don't know."

A pause.

"But I know who we're trying to save."

Inside Blackhaven...

Emily, Arthur, and a small group of guards moved through a hidden passage.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

Children.

Families.

Missing people.

Emily stopped suddenly.

One photograph caught her attention.

A little girl.

Six years old.

Standing beside Lucas and Sophie.

All three children were holding hands.

She recognized herself.

But the date made no sense.

2002

Lucas and Sophie hadn't been born yet.

Emily touched the picture.

"How..."

Arthur continued walking.

"Don't look at things you aren't ready to understand."

She turned sharply.

"No."

Her voice became colder.

"I've spent my whole life being told what I can and cannot understand."

Arthur stopped.

Emily held up the photograph.

"Explain."

Arthur looked at it for a long moment.

Then quietly said:

"Lucas and Sophie were not the first children."

Emily felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur answered:

"They were the latest."

The passage opened into a hidden chamber.

Inside were dozens of small rooms.

Each contained children's belongings.

Toys.

Drawings.

Clothes.

Memories.

A museum of lives.

Emily walked slowly.

Every item represented a child who had vanished.

Then she saw something that made her stop.

A small wooden horse.

Broken on one side.

She knew it.

Impossible.

She had owned that toy.

When she was little.

She picked it up.

A hidden message had been carved underneath.

Three words.

REMEMBER THE FIRE.

Suddenly...

A memory flashed.

Not a dream.

A real memory.

Flames.

Smoke.

Her mother screaming.

A man standing in the doorway.

The phoenix ring.

Emily dropped the toy.

Her breathing became frantic.

"I remember..."

Arthur turned.

"What?"

"I remember the fire."

The entire room went silent.

Emily pressed her hands against her head.

Images came faster.

Her father carrying her.

Her mother pushing her away.

A woman with blue eyes standing outside the burning house.

And a voice.

A voice she had forgotten for twenty-four years.

A man's voice.

"You were never supposed to survive."

Suddenly...

The chamber doors exploded open.

The Phoenix Council entered.

At the front stood Helena.

She looked at Emily.

Not with anger.

Not with hatred.

With sadness.

"Finally."

Emily stepped backward.

"You."

Helena tilted her head.

"You remember me."

"You killed my mother."

Silence.

Then Helena answered:

"Yes."

Emily froze.

She expected denial.

A lie.

Anything.

But not the truth.

Helena continued.

"Because your mother was going to expose everything."

Arthur shouted:

"Don't listen to her!"

Helena ignored him.

"Your father begged me to save you."

Emily stared.

"My father?"

"He knew the organization was too powerful."

"So he joined you?"

"No."

Helena's eyes hardened.

"He built a way to destroy us."

Daniel and his team finally reached the chamber.

Weapons raised.

Everyone turned.

For one second...

No one moved.

Daniel saw Emily.

Alive.

Then he saw Lucas and Sophie behind the glass chamber.

His expression changed.

"They're alive."

Emily nodded.

Barely able to speak.

"Yes."

But before anyone could celebrate...

Helena pressed a small device in her hand.

A countdown appeared across every screen.

05:00

Daniel looked at Arthur.

"What is that?"

Arthur's face turned pale.

"The final protocol."

"What happens at zero?"

Arthur didn't answer.

Emily stared.

"Arthur."

He looked at her.

Then quietly said:

"The entire Blackhaven station is destroyed."

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped forward.

"You built a self-destruct?"

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

His eyes moved toward Helena.

"She did."

Helena smiled faintly.

"The truth was never meant to escape."

The countdown continued.

04:32

Lucas and Sophie watched through the glass.

Emily ran toward them.

"Open this!"

No one moved.

Helena looked at her.

"Do you want to know the real reason your children were taken?"

Emily turned.

Helena spoke slowly.

"Because they are the only people who can unlock what your father left behind."

Daniel frowned.

"What did he leave?"

Helena looked directly at Emily.

"The truth about who you really are."

The timer continued.

03:59

Then...

Every screen in the station changed.

A video appeared.

A younger version of Emily's father looked into the camera.

His face was tired.

Afraid.

But determined.

His first words were:

"If Emily is watching this..."

He paused.

"...then I failed to protect her."

Emily stared at the screen.

Her father's voice continued.

"But she finally found the truth."

A long silence.

Then the sentence that changed everything:

"Emily Carter was never my daughter."

The station went completely silent.

The countdown kept moving.
