CHAPTER 13 THE BLACK CROWN

CHAPTER 13

THE BLACK CROWN

The symbol appeared on every screen in Blackhaven.

A black crown.

No explanation.

No name.

Only the image.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Because everyone in the room understood the same thing.

The Phoenix Council was not the end.

It was only a door.

And something far worse was standing behind it.

Daniel Hayes stared at the screen.

"Your father knew."

Emily slowly nodded.

"He always knew."

"Then why didn't he tell you?"

Emily looked at the final message.

Because she already knew the answer.

"Because if I knew..."

She paused.

"...they would know I knew."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Emily looked around the station.

At the cameras.

The hidden microphones.

The countless files.

"The Phoenix Council wasn't just watching people."

Her voice lowered.

"They were being watched too."

Eleanor Voss walked toward the screen.

Her expression had changed.

For the first time in decades...

She looked afraid.

"No."

Arthur noticed.

"You know that symbol?"

Eleanor didn't answer.

Arthur stepped closer.

"Eleanor."

She slowly looked at him.

"The Black Crown."

Daniel looked confused.

"Who are they?"

Eleanor's eyes remained fixed on the screen.

"The people who created the Phoenix Council."

Silence.

Emily stared.

"Then who created them?"

Nobody answered.

Because that question was the one nobody wanted to ask.

A hidden speaker suddenly activated.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A voice.

Distorted.

Neither male nor female.

"Congratulations, Emily."

Everyone turned toward the ceiling.

The voice continued.

"You found the first door."

Emily stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

A quiet laugh.

"You spent twenty-four years trying to escape us."

"Now you finally understand."

Daniel raised his weapon toward the cameras.

"Show yourself."

The voice ignored him.

"Emily Carter."

"You have completed the recovery process."

"The memories are restored."

"The Phoenix archive is exposed."

"The Council is compromised."

A pause.

"Now we begin the final stage."

Arthur looked at Emily.

"What final stage?"

The voice answered:

"Succession."

Emily's face changed.

"No."

The voice continued.

"You were never meant to destroy the Phoenix."

"You were meant to replace it."

The station suddenly changed.

The walls moved.

Hidden panels opened.

Behind them were not weapons.

Not explosives.

Computers.

Thousands of servers.

The entire Blackhaven facility was waking up.

Daniel looked around.

"This place isn't an archive."

Emily understood immediately.

"No."

She stared at the machines.

"It's a command center."

The voice continued.

"The Phoenix Council collected information."

"The Black Crown controls decisions."

"Every government."

"Every corporation."

"Every powerful family."

"The world is not controlled by those who own money."

A pause.

"It is controlled by those who know what everyone hides."

Emily looked at Alexander.

For the first time...

He looked powerless.

"You knew."

Alexander looked away.

"I knew they existed."

"But I never saw them."

Emily narrowed her eyes.

"You're lying."

Alexander looked at her.

"I spent my entire life trying to reach them."

"And?"

His voice became bitter.

"They never allowed anyone to meet them."

Suddenly, Lucas pulled Emily's hand.

"Mom."

She looked down.

The boy pointed toward a screen.

A photograph had appeared.

Emily.

Lucas.

Sophie.

But the date was impossible.

Three years before the children were born.

Emily walked closer.

Her heart slowed.

The photograph showed her standing beside two children.

Older versions of Lucas and Sophie.

Not babies.

Teenagers.

Behind them...

The black crown symbol.

Emily whispered:

"No..."

Daniel looked at the image.

"What is it?"

Emily couldn't answer.

Because another memory was returning.

Not from the machine.

From herself.

A memory hidden deeper.

Three years earlier.

A secret room.

Emily sitting across from a stranger.

A man wearing no symbol.

No ring.

No uniform.

Only a simple black suit.

He placed a photograph on the table.

Lucas.

Sophie.

Older.

Alive.

The man said:

"You will forget this conversation."

Emily asked:

"Why?"

The man answered:

"Because you will choose differently if you remember."

Emily looked confused.

"What choice?"

The man smiled.

"The choice between being their mother..."

"...and being the person who saves the world."

Present.

Emily stepped backward.

She remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

She had met the Black Crown before.

And she had made a deal.

Harold noticed her expression.

"You remember."

Emily looked at him.

"Yes."

"What did they make you promise?"

Emily stayed silent.

Because she didn't want to say it.

But everyone waited.

Finally...

She whispered:

"I promised I would never look for them."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

Emily looked at Lucas and Sophie.

"Because they threatened my children."

The station became silent.

Even the mysterious voice stopped.

For a moment...

The Black Crown had no answer.

Then:

"Excellent."

Emily looked upward.

"You expected me to remember."

"Yes."

"You wanted this."

"Yes."

"Why?"

A pause.

Then the voice answered:

"Because the only person capable of defeating us..."

"...is the person we created."

Suddenly, every exit opened.

Not because the Council allowed it.

Because someone else had taken control.

Outside Blackhaven...

Vehicles surrounded the facility.

But these were not Phoenix guards.

They were government agents.

News helicopters.

Police units.

Military transport.

The world had arrived.

Daniel's radio activated.

A familiar voice came through.

Captain Olivia Grant.

But this time...

Her voice sounded normal.

"Daniel."

He grabbed the radio.

"Olivia! Where were you?"

A pause.

"Inside."

"What?"

"I was investigating the Phoenix Council for five years."

Daniel froze.

"You were undercover?"

"Yes."

He looked toward the Phoenix members.

Some of them looked shocked.

Others didn't.

Olivia continued:

"But we were wrong."

Daniel frowned.

"About what?"

Her voice became serious.

"The Phoenix Council wasn't the enemy."

A pause.

"They were the barrier."

The station shook.

Everyone looked up.

A deep rumble came from above.

Olivia continued:

"The Black Crown is activating something."

Daniel looked at Emily.

"What?"

Olivia answered:

"The original protocol."

The black crown symbol on the screen changed.

A countdown appeared.

Not minutes.

Not seconds.

A date.

48 HOURS

Emily stared.

"What happens then?"

The voice answered:

"The world begins again."

Harold stepped forward.

"What does that mean?"

The voice replied:

"The old systems fall."

"The new ones rise."

Emily looked at the symbol.

"And where do I fit in?"

The answer came instantly.

"You are the key."

The screen showed one final image.

A building.

Somewhere unknown.

At the entrance:

A black crown.

Below it...

A name.

THE CROWN FOUNDATION

Emily stared.

Because beneath the name was a photograph.

The person standing at the entrance.

The person leading the Black Crown.

Was someone she recognized.

Someone impossible.

Someone who had died twenty years ago.

Her mother.

Emily stopped breathing.

"No..."

Lucas grabbed her hand.

"Mom?"

She couldn't answer.

Because on the screen...

Her mother slowly turned toward the camera.

May you like

And smiled.
