CHAPTER 9 THE DAUGHTER WHO NEVER EXISTED

CHAPTER 9
THE DAUGHTER WHO NEVER EXISTED
The words echoed through Blackhaven Terminal.
"Emily Carter was never my daughter."
For several seconds...
Nobody moved.
Not the guards.
Not Daniel.
Not Arthur.
Not even Helena.
The only sound remaining was the countdown.
03:39
03:38
03:37
Emily stared at the screen.
Her father's younger face remained frozen in front of her.
The man who had raised her.
The man who had taught her how to ride a bicycle.
The man who had held her hand during thunderstorms.
The man whose death had destroyed her.
Now...
A recording claimed she wasn't his daughter.
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
"No."
The screen continued.
Her father's voice returned.
"If you're watching this, it means the Phoenix Council found Blackhaven."
A pause.
"It also means Emily finally knows enough to survive."
Emily looked around.
"Survive what?"
Nobody answered.
The recording continued.
"Emily, I'm sorry."
Those three words hurt more than anything else.
Because they sounded like goodbye.
"I lied to you your entire life."
Emily's eyes filled.
"But every lie was designed to keep you alive."
Daniel stepped closer to the screen.
"Who is she?"
He pointed at Emily.
"Who is Emily Carter?"
Helena answered quietly.
"The last remaining witness."
Daniel looked at her.
"To what?"
Helena's expression darkened.
"The beginning."
The countdown continued.
03:05
Arthur moved toward the control panel.
Emily immediately stopped him.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
She wiped away her tears.
"Not until I get answers."
Arthur shook his head.
"We don't have time."
Emily stepped closer.
"You all have been controlling my entire life."
Her voice grew stronger.
"My memories."
"My family."
"My children."
"You don't get to tell me there isn't time."
Silence.
Even Helena looked surprised.
For the first time...
Emily wasn't a victim.
She was demanding the truth.
The recording changed.
A new image appeared.
A small hospital room.
A newborn baby.
A nurse carried the infant toward a man.
Emily's father.
The date appeared:
AUGUST 14, 2002
The same impossible date from the previous tape.
The nurse spoke.
"Are you sure?"
Emily's father's younger voice answered:
"There's no other choice."
The nurse looked down at the baby.
"What will you name her?"
A long silence.
Then:
"Emily."
Daniel frowned.
The image zoomed closer.
The baby had a small birthmark on her shoulder.
A crescent-shaped mark.
Emily touched her own shoulder instinctively.
She had the same mark.
The recording continued.
"She cannot know who she really is."
The nurse asked:
"Why?"
Her father's voice became emotional.
"Because if they know she survived..."
A pause.
"...they will finish what they started."
Emily backed away from the screen.
"No..."
Arthur looked at her.
"You understand now."
"No."
Her eyes filled with confusion.
"I don't."
Helena spoke.
"Your father wasn't hiding your identity."
She looked directly at Emily.
"He was hiding your existence."
A violent explosion shook the station.
The ceiling cracked.
Dust fell.
The countdown reached:
02:15
Daniel shouted:
"Enough!"
Everyone turned.
"We solve the family mystery later."
He pointed toward the timer.
"Right now, everyone dies if we don't stop that."
Arthur nodded.
He rushed toward the control room.
But Helena moved faster.
She pressed another button.
The doors around the station locked.
Daniel raised his weapon.
"Stop."
Helena ignored him.
"Emily needs to know the final truth."
Emily stared at her.
"What final truth?"
Helena walked closer.
For the first time...
Her cold expression disappeared.
"You weren't taken from your family."
Emily frowned.
"What?"
"You were given to them."
The room became silent.
Helena continued.
"Your biological parents were part of the Phoenix Council."
Emily's face went pale.
"No."
"Your mother tried to escape."
"My mother died."
"Yes."
Helena looked away.
"Because she chose you over them."
Emily felt like the floor disappeared beneath her.
"My mother..."
"She helped your father steal the Phoenix records."
"Then why did he raise me?"
"Because he promised your mother."
Helena's voice softened.
"She asked him to give you a normal life."
Daniel stared at Helena.
"Then why take the children?"
Helena didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
She looked at Lucas and Sophie behind the glass.
"Because history repeats itself."
Emily followed her gaze.
"What does that mean?"
Helena whispered:
"Your children inherited something from you."
"What?"
"Something the Phoenix Council has searched for for decades."
The glass chamber suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Lucas and Sophie ran out.
Emily immediately grabbed them.
She held both children tightly.
Their warmth.
Their heartbeat.
They were real.
Alive.
She cried silently.
Lucas whispered:
"Mom..."
"I thought I would never see you again."
Emily hugged him harder.
But then Sophie looked past her.
At Helena.
And her face changed.
Emily noticed.
"Sophie?"
The little girl whispered:
"I know her."
Everyone froze.
Emily turned slowly.
"What?"
Sophie pointed at Helena.
"She was there."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Where?"
Sophie looked afraid.
"At the house."
Emily's heart stopped.
"What house?"
Sophie swallowed.
"The night we disappeared."
The countdown:
01:00
The station lights flickered.
A final alarm sounded.
Arthur shouted:
"We have sixty seconds!"
Daniel rushed toward the control room.
Olivia followed.
Emily refused to move.
Not again.
No more secrets.
No more people deciding her life.
She looked at Helena.
"You were at my house."
Helena didn't deny it.
"Yes."
"You took my children."
"Yes."
Emily's anger exploded.
"Why?"
Helena's eyes became wet.
"Because I was trying to save them."
Emily stared.
"Save them from what?"
Helena looked toward the ceiling.
Toward the thousands of hidden cameras.
Toward the organization she had served her entire life.
Then she whispered:
"From the person who controls all of this."
Everyone became silent.
Daniel turned.
"Who?"
Helena looked directly at Emily.
"The only person powerful enough to manipulate both families."
A pause.
"The person your father trusted most."
Emily felt a chill.
"Who?"
Helena answered:
"Your grandfather."
The countdown reached:
00:30
Emily froze.
"My grandfather died before I was born."
Helena shook her head.
"No."
She looked at the surveillance camera above them.
"He wanted you to believe that."
The screen suddenly activated.
A face appeared.
An elderly man.
Sitting in a dark room.
Calm.
Smiling.
Emily stopped breathing.
She knew that face.
She had seen him at the cemetery.
Standing beside her children's graves.
Her father-in-law.
Harold Bennett.
But there was something impossible.
Behind him...
A wall filled with photographs.
One photograph showed a young woman holding baby Emily.
Another showed Lucas and Sophie.
Another showed Emily's father.
Harold looked directly into the camera.
Then spoke:
"Hello, Emily."
His voice echoed through Blackhaven.
"Welcome home."
The timer reached:
00:10
Daniel screamed:
"Move!"
Harold smiled.
"There's one thing you should know before the station disappears."
00:05
Emily stared at the screen.
Harold said:
"I am not your enemy."
00:04
"I am your grandfather."
00:03
"And I have been protecting you..."
00:02
"...from your real father."
00:01
May you like
The entire station went black.
