CHAPTER 7 — THE SECRET UNDER THE WEAVER HOUSE

CHAPTER 7 — THE SECRET UNDER THE WEAVER HOUSE
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Not Gwendolyn.
Not Richard.
Not even Dr. Voss.
The only sound inside the room was the quiet ticking of the old clock hanging on the wall.
A clock that had belonged to Lucas’s father.
A clock that had been in the Weaver family home for more than thirty years.
Lucas looked at his mother.
Her face was pale.
Her hands were shaking.
But beneath the fear...
There was something else.
Regret.
“Mom,” Lucas said softly.
“What secret?”
Florence looked at him.
And for a moment, Lucas saw the same woman who used to hold his hand when he was a child.
The same woman who always told him:
“Some truths are heavy, Lucas. People carry them because they’re afraid of what happens when they put them down.”
Now he understood.
His mother had been carrying something heavy.
For years.
“Your father never told you everything about the house,” Florence whispered.
Lucas frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Richard suddenly stepped forward.
“That’s enough.”
Everyone turned.
Richard’s calm expression had disappeared.
For the first time, Lucas saw panic.
Real panic.
“Florence, you’re confused.”
But Florence looked at him.
And her voice became stronger.
“No.”
The room froze.
“I spent years being afraid of you.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.”
“I know exactly what I’m saying.”
Lucas looked between them.
His uncle.
His mother.
A lifetime of history he never knew existed.
“What happened between you two?”
Florence looked down.
Then she whispered:
“Your father discovered something before he died.”
Lucas stopped breathing.
His father.
A man who had been gone for twelve years.
A man Lucas remembered as kind, hardworking, and honest.
“What did he discover?”
Florence looked at Richard.
“He discovered Richard was stealing from the family business.”
Silence.
Gwendolyn looked at Richard.
“You never told me that.”
Richard ignored her.
“That’s a lie.”
Florence shook her head.
“No.”
“Your brother trusted you.”
“He gave you opportunities.”
“He treated you like family.”
“But you wanted more.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“You have no proof.”
Florence looked at Lucas.
“I do.”
Lucas felt his heart jump.
“Where?”
She hesitated.
Then answered:
“In the house.”
The old Weaver estate.
The house everyone was fighting over.
The house Lucas grew up in.
The house his father built with his own hands.
Suddenly, it was no longer just a property.
It was a locked box.
And everyone wanted the key.
“When your father found out,” Florence continued, “he knew Richard would try to destroy the evidence.”
Lucas listened carefully.
“So what did Dad do?”
“He hid everything.”
“Where?”
Florence looked toward the window.
“Somewhere only he and I knew.”
Lucas stepped closer.
“Mom.”
“Where?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was supposed to tell you when you were older.”
“I was supposed to explain everything.”
“But then your father died.”
“And Richard came back.”
Lucas’s expression changed.
“Wait.”
“Richard came back after Dad died?”
Florence nodded.
“He acted like he was grieving.”
“But he wasn’t.”
“He was searching.”
“For what?”
“The evidence.”
Richard suddenly laughed.
A cold, bitter laugh.
“You really think this is going to work?”
Lucas turned.
“What?”
“You think your mother telling stories changes anything?”
Richard stepped forward.
“She’s old.”
“She’s confused.”
“She’s emotional.”
The same words.
Again.
The same weapon.
Lucas looked at him.
“You’ve used that excuse for years.”
Richard smiled.
“And people believe it.”
That sentence made the room colder.
Because Richard wasn’t denying it.
He was admitting it.
He believed Florence had no power because people would dismiss her.
Lucas moved closer.
“You manipulated her.”
Richard shrugged.
“I protected my interests.”
“Your interests?”
“Yes.”
“You think your father was innocent?”
Lucas stared.
Richard’s voice became darker.
“You only know the version your mother told you.”
“And what’s the truth?”
Richard smiled.
“Your father wasn’t the hero you think he was.”
Lucas felt anger rising.
“Don’t talk about him like that.”
“Why?”
“Because he’s dead?”
“Because dead people become legends.”
Richard leaned closer.
“But legends are usually missing chapters.”
That night, Lucas barely spoke.
After Richard and the others left, he sat with Florence in the living room.
The confrontation had ended.
But the mystery had only begun.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“Tell me everything.”
Florence looked exhausted.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For keeping this from you.”
Lucas shook his head.
“No.”
“You were protecting me.”
She smiled sadly.
“I spent my whole life protecting you.”
“And now look what happened.”
Lucas held her hand.
“Mom.”
“I’m not a child anymore.”
“I can handle the truth.”
Florence looked at him.
Then slowly nodded.
“Your father owned more than the house.”
“What else?”
“A company.”
Lucas frowned.
“I thought Dad only had the construction business.”
“That’s what everyone thought.”
“What did he really own?”
Florence took a deep breath.
“A development company.”
“How big?”
She looked at him.
“Big enough that people would kill for it.”
Lucas became silent.
“How much?”
Florence hesitated.
“Your father’s assets were worth far more than eight million dollars.”
Lucas stared.
“Then why did nobody know?”
“Because your father trusted the wrong person.”
“Richard?”
Florence nodded.
“Richard knew about hidden investments.”
“He knew about accounts.”
“He knew where your father kept important records.”
Lucas looked toward the hallway.
“So the property isn’t the real target.”
“No.”
“Then what is?”
Florence whispered:
“The inheritance.”
The next morning, Daniel arrived with new information.
Lucas opened the door.
Daniel immediately knew something had happened.
“What’s wrong?”
Lucas stepped aside.
“You were right.”
“About what?”
“This is bigger than the house.”
Daniel entered.
Lucas explained everything.
The secret.
Richard.
The hidden assets.
The old company.
When he finished, Daniel was silent.
Then he opened his laptop.
“I found something last night.”
Lucas looked at him.
“What?”
“A company registration.”
“Related to your father?”
“Yes.”
Daniel turned the screen.
The name appeared.
Weaver Legacy Holdings.
Lucas stared.
“I’ve never heard of that.”
“Because it was dissolved publicly.”
“But?”
Daniel clicked another file.
“But not privately.”
Lucas looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
“It means someone moved the assets.”
“Where?”
Daniel looked serious.
“Offshore accounts.”
Lucas felt a cold wave move through him.
“Who had access?”
Daniel answered:
“Your uncle.”
A pause.
Then:
“And someone else.”
Lucas looked up.
“Who?”
Daniel turned the screen.
A second name appeared.
Lucas’s face changed.
Because he recognized it.
The name belonged to someone he never expected.
Someone who had been standing beside him through this entire nightmare.
Someone who had pretended to help.
Someone who had been closer than anyone.
Gwendolyn Weaver.
Lucas stepped back.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“She wasn’t just helping Richard.”
“She was part of the plan from the beginning.”
Lucas stared at the screen.
His wife’s name.
Connected to his father’s missing fortune.
Connected to the stolen money.
Connected to the property.
Everything.
All roads led back to her.
But then Daniel said something unexpected.
“There’s one more thing.”
“What?”
Daniel hesitated.
“The account activity shows something strange.”
“What?”
“Your wife wasn’t the first person who accessed the money.”
Lucas looked confused.
“Who was?”
Daniel turned the laptop.
A name appeared.
A name that made Lucas’s blood run cold.
Because it belonged to someone who should have had no connection to the family anymore.
Someone who disappeared years ago.
Someone Lucas believed was dead.
Daniel whispered:
“Lucas... your father may not have died the way you were told.”
The room went silent.
And for the first time since discovering Gwendolyn’s betrayal...
Lucas felt something stronger than anger.
Shock.
Because if Daniel was right...
May you like
Then Lucas Weaver had spent twelve years grieving a lie.
