CHAPTER 2 — THE SIGNATURE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

CHAPTER 2 — THE SIGNATURE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

Lucas did not move for several minutes.

He simply stared at the message on his phone.

“Lucas... you don’t understand what you just uncovered.”

Those words kept repeating in his mind.

Because whoever had sent them was not surprised.

Not confused.

Not asking questions.

They already knew something was wrong.

And that frightened Lucas more than anything.

He looked down at the hidden documents again.

The property transfer agreement.

The medical authorization.

The witness signature.

Every page was like a piece of a puzzle designed to destroy his family.

But there was one thing Lucas could not understand.

How?

How had Gwendolyn managed to get access to these documents?

How had she convinced anyone to help her?

And most importantly...

Why had nobody told him?

For years, Lucas believed his family was built on honesty.

Now he was discovering it was built on locked doors.

And everyone seemed to have a key except him.

The next morning, Lucas woke before sunrise.

He barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw his mother’s bruised arm.

He saw Gwendolyn’s cold expression.

He heard those words.

“Your suffering is a burden.”

He hated that sentence.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it revealed something deeper.

Gwendolyn did not see Florence as a person anymore.

She saw her as an obstacle.

A problem.

Something standing between her and what she wanted.

Lucas quietly walked into the kitchen.

Florence was already awake.

She sat near the window with a blanket around her shoulders.

The morning sunlight touched her face.

For a moment, Lucas saw the woman from his childhood.

The woman who woke up before everyone else.

The woman who packed his lunch.

The woman who smiled even when she had nothing.

But now...

She looked smaller.

Fragile.

“Mom.”

Florence turned.

A small smile appeared.

“Lucas.”

He walked over and hugged her.

She immediately became tense.

Not because she didn’t want the hug.

Because she wasn’t used to feeling safe anymore.

Lucas noticed.

And that broke his heart.

“Mom...”

He sat beside her.

“I need to ask you something.”

Florence looked down.

“About yesterday?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Her fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Lucas... please don’t make things worse.”

His chest tightened.

“What do you mean?”

“She’s your wife.”

“She’s family.”

Lucas looked at her.

“Mom, family doesn’t hurt you.”

Florence’s eyes filled with tears.

“She wasn’t always like this.”

That sentence caught him.

“What happened?”

Florence looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.”

“You must know something.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Then she whispered:

“But I know when it changed.”

Lucas leaned closer.

“When?”

Florence swallowed.

“After she found out about the property.”

The room became silent.

Lucas felt his entire body freeze.

“What property?”

His mother looked at him.

Then immediately realized.

“You didn’t know.”

Lucas slowly stood.

“Mom.”

“What property?”

Florence looked afraid.

Not of him.

Of the answer.

“The old Weaver house.”

Lucas felt his stomach drop.

“She knew?”

Florence nodded.

“She asked many questions.”

“What questions?”

“About your father.”

“About the ownership.”

“About whether you were the only heir.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

Every answer created more questions.

“When did she ask these things?”

Florence hesitated.

“About six months ago.”

Six months.

Lucas remembered.

Six months ago was when Florence’s health started declining.

Six months ago was when Gwendolyn suddenly became extremely interested in helping.

Six months ago was when she insisted Florence move into their home.

At the time, Lucas thought his wife was showing kindness.

Now...

It looked like preparation.

“Mom.”

His voice became softer.

“Did you sign anything?”

Florence looked away.

Lucas already knew the answer.

“Mom.”

“I don’t remember.”

Those four words terrified him.

Not because his mother forgot.

Because someone might have used that against her.

Florence touched his hand.

“She told me it was just paperwork.”

“What paperwork?”

“I don’t know.”

“Mom.”

“She said it was for medical care.”

Lucas felt anger rising.

But he controlled it.

Because he needed the truth.

Not revenge.

Not yet.

“Did anyone else see the documents?”

Florence became quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“A man.”

“What man?”

She looked at him.

“Your uncle.”

Lucas froze.

His uncle.

Richard Weaver.

His father’s younger brother.

The man who disappeared from their lives years ago.

The man who always said he wanted nothing to do with family business.

The man who suddenly returned three months ago.

Lucas remembered.

Richard had visited often.

He brought gifts.

He acted concerned.

He told Lucas:

“Family should stay together during difficult times.”

At the time, Lucas thought it was genuine.

Now every memory felt poisoned.

At 9:30 that morning, Lucas met the person who had replied to his message.

Dr. Amelia Hart.

Florence’s longtime physician.

They sat inside a quiet café away from the house.

Amelia placed a folder on the table.

Her expression was serious.

“Lucas, before we talk, I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“Your mother is not confused.”

Lucas looked at her.

“What?”

“The medical records they showed me suggest she has severe cognitive decline.”

“But?”

“But the examinations I personally performed show something different.”

Lucas leaned forward.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying someone exaggerated your mother’s condition.”

His hands tightened.

“Why?”

“To make her appear incapable of making decisions.”

A cold feeling moved through him.

The property documents.

The medication.

The medical records.

Everything connected.

Someone was building a story.

A story where Florence was too weak to control her own life.

And Gwendolyn became the only person who could “help.”

“Doctor... can someone legally transfer property using false medical information?”

Amelia looked at him carefully.

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“Whether the signature is real.”

Lucas pulled out a photo of the document.

Amelia studied it.

Then her face changed.

“What?”

She pointed.

“Lucas... this signature.”

“What about it?”

“I’ve seen your mother sign documents for years.”

“Yes.”

“This is not her normal signature.”

Lucas stared.

“What?”

“Look at the pressure.”

“The handwriting.”

“The movement.”

“This looks like someone trying to copy her.”

The world suddenly became quieter.

Because now he had confirmation.

The transfer was not just suspicious.

It was possibly forged.

But then Amelia said something that made his blood run cold.

“There’s another problem.”

“What?”

“The witness signature.”

Lucas looked up.

“Who is it?”

Amelia hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your mother’s lawyer.”

Lucas felt his heart sink.

“Her lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“The person responsible for protecting her interests.”

The pieces connected.

Gwendolyn.

Richard.

The lawyer.

Three people.

Three connections.

One plan.

Lucas looked outside the café window.

Cars moved through the street.

People walked by.

The world continued normally.

But inside his life...

Everything had changed.

“Lucas.”

Amelia lowered her voice.

“You need to be careful.”

“Why?”

“Because if someone is willing to manipulate medical records and steal an eight-million-dollar property...”

She paused.

“They won’t stop because you found out.”

Lucas looked at her.

“What should I do?”

Amelia closed the folder.

“Pretend you know nothing.”

“Why?”

“Because right now, they think they’re winning.”

“And people who think they’re winning usually reveal their entire plan.”

Lucas understood.

For the first time since discovering the truth...

He felt calm.

Not because the situation was better.

Because now he had a strategy.

He would not confront Gwendolyn.

Not yet.

He would not accuse Richard.

Not yet.

He would not expose the lawyer.

Not yet.

He would become exactly what they thought he was.

The clueless husband.

The distracted son.

The man who never noticed anything.

Because sometimes the best way to catch someone hiding in the shadows...

Was to make them believe the darkness was still protecting them.

That evening, Lucas returned home.

Gwendolyn was waiting.

She smiled.

“Where were you?”

“Work.”

Another lie.

But this time...

His lie had a purpose.

She walked toward him.

“I was worried.”

Lucas smiled slightly.

“Were you?”

For a brief second, her expression changed.

Then she laughed.

“Of course.”

Lucas looked at her.

The woman standing in front of him looked exactly like his wife.

But he finally understood something.

A mask does not become a face just because someone wears it for years.

“I’m going to check on Mom,” Lucas said.

Gwendolyn grabbed his arm.

“Lucas.”

He stopped.

“We need to talk.”

“About what?”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“I think your mother needs professional care.”

Lucas stayed silent.

“She’s getting worse.”

“She needs a facility.”

There it was.

The next step.

Remove Florence.

Remove the witness.

Remove the problem.

Lucas looked at his wife.

Then smiled.

A calm, gentle smile.

“Maybe you’re right.”

Gwendolyn relaxed.

She thought she had won.

She had no idea...

May you like

Lucas had just made the first move.
