CHAPTER 3 — THE PERFECT PLAN BEGINS TO CRACK

CHAPTER 3 — THE PERFECT PLAN BEGINS TO CRACK

Gwendolyn smiled when Lucas agreed.

It was a small smile.

Almost invisible.

But Lucas saw it.

And for the first time in seven years of marriage, he understood something terrifying.

He had spent years learning his wife’s happiness.

Her favorite flowers.

Her favorite restaurants.

The way she laughed when she was genuinely amused.

The little expressions she made when she was nervous.

But he had never learned the face she wore when she believed she had won.

Until now.

“Maybe you’re right,” Lucas repeated.

Gwendolyn’s shoulders relaxed.

“I knew you would understand.”

She reached for his hand.

A gesture that once would have comforted him.

Tonight, it felt like a performance.

“She needs more care than we can provide,” Gwendolyn continued.

“It’s not fair to you.”

“It’s not fair to me.”

She paused.

Then added softly:

“And honestly... it’s not fair to her either.”

Lucas almost laughed.

Almost.

Because the woman who had bruised Florence’s arm was now pretending to care about Florence’s comfort.

The irony was so sharp it almost cut.

Instead, Lucas nodded.

“You’re right.”

Gwendolyn looked pleased.

“We can start looking at facilities tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Why so soon?”

Her eyes moved away.

Only briefly.

But again, Lucas noticed.

“Because the sooner she gets professional help, the better.”

Lucas nodded.

“Of course.”

He walked away.

But behind his calm expression, his mind was moving faster than ever.

A facility.

That was their next move.

They wanted Florence gone.

Away from Lucas.

Away from doctors who might ask questions.

Away from anyone who could see the truth.

And once Florence was removed...

The property transfer would become much easier.

Lucas entered his mother’s room.

Florence looked up.

Her eyes immediately searched his face.

She knew.

Mothers always knew.

“Did you talk to her?”

Lucas sat beside her.

“Yes.”

Florence looked nervous.

“What did she say?”

Lucas gently held her hand.

“She wants to put you in a care facility.”

Florence looked down.

“I knew it.”

“Mom.”

“I knew this day would come.”

Lucas frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Florence stared at the floor.

“Your wife has been asking about the house for months.”

“Not directly.”

“She was careful.”

“She asked things like...”

“‘What happens if someone can no longer manage their own property?’”

“‘Who makes decisions if a person becomes too sick?’”

Lucas felt cold.

“She was planning this.”

Florence closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want to believe it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Because I thought I was the problem.”

Those words hurt Lucas more than anything.

“You thought that?”

Florence nodded.

“She always looked so tired.”

“She told me she had given up her life to take care of me.”

“She said you would eventually choose between your wife and your mother.”

Lucas’s jaw tightened.

That was the trap.

Make him feel guilty.

Make him believe protecting his mother meant destroying his marriage.

Make him hesitate.

But Gwendolyn underestimated one thing.

Lucas had already lost the ability to doubt Florence.

Not after seeing those bruises.

The next morning, Lucas began his investigation.

Quietly.

Carefully.

The first person he contacted was the lawyer.

Martin Caldwell.

The man had represented the Weaver family for almost twenty years.

He handled property documents.

Business agreements.

Inheritance planning.

Lucas arranged a meeting.

When Martin entered the office, he looked exactly like Lucas remembered.

Gray suit.

Perfect tie.

Professional smile.

“Lucas.”

He extended his hand.

“It has been a while.”

Lucas shook it.

“Yes.”

“Your mother told me you were handling everything well.”

Lucas sat down.

“My mother told you that?”

Martin smiled.

“She’s always been proud of you.”

Lucas watched him.

Interesting.

The lawyer brought up Florence first.

Not Lucas.

Not business.

Florence.

Almost like he was trying to establish a relationship.

“So,” Lucas said.

“I need to ask about some documents.”

Martin adjusted his glasses.

“What kind of documents?”

“Property documents.”

The smallest change appeared on Martin’s face.

A tiny movement.

A slight tightening around the eyes.

But enough.

“What property?”

“The Weaver estate.”

Silence.

Only two seconds.

But two seconds was enough.

“I see.”

Lucas leaned back.

“You seem surprised.”

“Not surprised.”

“Concerned.”

“Why?”

Martin folded his hands.

“Because your mother’s health has become complicated.”

Lucas remained silent.

Then placed a copy of the transfer agreement on the desk.

Martin looked at it.

And immediately became serious.

“Where did you get this?”

That reaction told Lucas everything.

Not “What is this?”

Not “Is this real?”

He knew exactly what it was.

“I found it.”

Martin looked uncomfortable.

“Lucas...”

“Did my mother sign this?”

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.”

Lucas felt something inside him drop.

“But?”

Martin sighed.

“But there are circumstances you don’t understand.”

“Explain.”

“Your mother was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Losing control.”

Lucas stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Martin avoided his eyes.

“People change when they become older.”

“My mother is not incapable.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You implied it.”

Martin became quiet.

Lucas leaned forward.

“Did you witness this signature?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

“Did you watch her sign it?”

Martin said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

Lucas slowly stood.

“You didn’t.”

Martin looked up.

“Lucas... be careful.”

There it was.

The same warning.

The same fear.

Everyone who knew the truth seemed afraid.

“Who pressured my mother?”

Martin looked away.

“I can’t discuss private matters.”

“Private matters?”

Lucas laughed quietly.

“My mother’s house.”

“My mother’s signature.”

“My mother’s future.”

“And you call it private?”

Martin stood.

“This conversation is over.”

Lucas watched him leave.

But before Martin reached the door...

Lucas spoke.

“One more question.”

Martin stopped.

“Who else was involved?”

The lawyer froze.

Just for a moment.

Then he walked out.

But Lucas saw something.

Fear.

Real fear.

That afternoon, Lucas checked the security cameras.

The ones he had installed around the house after a burglary years ago.

Gwendolyn hated them.

She always complained.

“They make the house feel like a prison.”

Lucas remembered laughing.

Now he realized something.

She hated cameras because cameras remembered.

People could deny.

People could manipulate.

But cameras had no loyalty.

No emotions.

No excuses.

Lucas reviewed footage from the last three months.

At first, nothing.

Then...

A familiar car appeared.

A black Mercedes.

Parking outside his house.

Richard Weaver.

His uncle.

Lucas watched.

Richard entered the house.

Two hours later, he left.

But something happened before he walked out.

He looked directly at the camera.

Not accidentally.

Not because he noticed it.

Because he knew.

He looked directly at it.

And smiled.

Lucas froze.

Because that smile carried a message.

A warning.

A challenge.

Richard knew about the cameras.

Which meant...

Someone had told him.

Lucas continued watching.

The footage jumped ahead.

Three weeks later.

Richard returned.

This time, he carried a folder.

The same type of black folder Lucas found in Gwendolyn’s closet.

Lucas felt his heart beat faster.

Then something even worse happened.

The bedroom camera caught audio.

Not clear.

But enough.

Richard’s voice.

“Once she signs, the house is ours.”

Gwendolyn replied:

“And Lucas?”

Richard laughed.

“Lucas will do what he always does.”

“What?”

“Believe the people he loves.”

The recording ended.

Lucas sat completely still.

The room felt silent.

But inside him...

A storm had started.

Because the enemy was not just his wife.

Not just his uncle.

They had been working together.

And they had studied him.

They knew his weakness.

They knew his heart.

They knew he trusted family.

But they forgot something.

A person who spends years protecting others...

Can become very dangerous when someone threatens the person they love.

Lucas saved the footage.

Then he made a call.

Not to the police.

Not yet.

Not to his wife.

Not yet.

He called someone who specialized in uncovering hidden financial crimes.

Someone who could follow the money.

Someone who could reveal exactly how deep this conspiracy went.

When the person answered, Lucas only said:

“I need you to investigate my wife, my uncle, and a property transfer.”

A pause.

Then the voice asked:

“How much trouble are we talking about?”

Lucas looked at the screen showing Gwendolyn and Richard laughing together.

Then he answered:

“Enough that someone tried to erase my mother from her own life.”

The person became silent.

Then replied:

“Send me everything.”

Lucas ended the call.

For the first time in days...

He felt something close to peace.

Because the game had changed.

Gwendolyn thought she was hiding secrets.

Richard thought he was controlling the board.

But neither of them understood one thing.

The moment they hurt Florence Weaver...

They created the one enemy they never expected.

Her son.

And Lucas was done playing defense.

Now...

May you like

He was coming for the truth.
