CHAPTER 5 — THE NIGHT THEY TRIED TO TAKE HER AWAY

CHAPTER 5 — THE NIGHT THEY TRIED TO TAKE HER AWAY
Lucas knew something was coming.
He felt it before it happened.
There was a different atmosphere in the house.
A strange stillness.
The kind of silence that appeared before a storm.
For the last week, Gwendolyn had been careful.
Too careful.
She no longer argued with Florence.
She no longer complained loudly.
She no longer showed anger.
Instead, she became gentle.
Almost perfect.
And Lucas knew exactly what that meant.
People who were losing control often changed their strategy.
Cruelty became kindness.
Pressure became concern.
Threats became fake protection.
Gwendolyn was preparing something.
And Lucas intended to find out what.
Two days after the phone call Lucas overheard, Gwendolyn came downstairs holding a folder.
She placed it on the dining table.
“Lucas.”
He looked up from his coffee.
“Yes?”
“I made an appointment.”
“For what?”
“For your mother.”
Lucas remained calm.
“With who?”
“A specialist.”
“What kind of specialist?”
“A memory care consultant.”
Lucas looked at the folder.
“Why?”
Gwendolyn sighed.
“Because we need to be realistic.”
There it was.
That word.
Realistic.
A word people used when they wanted others to accept something they had already decided.
“What did the doctor say?”
She paused.
“Which doctor?”
“Florence’s doctor.”
Gwendolyn looked uncomfortable.
“The doctor agrees she needs more support.”
Lucas knew that was a lie.
Because Dr. Amelia Hart had told him the opposite.
Florence’s condition had been exaggerated.
But he didn’t reveal that.
Not yet.
Instead, he opened the folder.
Inside were brochures.
Pictures of expensive care facilities.
Beautiful gardens.
Luxury rooms.
Smiling elderly residents.
Everything looked perfect.
Almost too perfect.
“This place looks expensive.”
Gwendolyn smiled.
“Your mother deserves the best.”
Lucas looked at her.
“You never mentioned this before.”
“I’ve been researching.”
“For how long?”
Another pause.
“Recently.”
A lie.
A terrible one.
Because Daniel had already discovered something.
The facility was connected to a company owned by one of Richard Weaver’s business partners.
Lucas closed the folder.
“I’ll think about it.”
Gwendolyn’s smile disappeared slightly.
“You’ll think about it?”
“Yes.”
She stared at him.
“Lucas, this isn’t something we can delay.”
“Why not?”
“Because your mother is suffering.”
Lucas looked toward Florence’s room.
Then back at his wife.
“She is.”
His voice became colder.
“But not for the reason you think.”
For a moment, Gwendolyn went silent.
Then she smiled.
“I don’t know what that means.”
Lucas smiled back.
“That’s okay.”
“I’m still figuring it out too.”
That afternoon, Lucas visited his mother.
Florence was sitting by the window.
She was holding an old photograph.
Lucas recognized it immediately.
It was a picture of his father.
“Dad?”
Florence smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
Lucas sat beside her.
“You miss him?”
“Every day.”
She touched the photograph.
“Your father always said something.”
“What?”
“He said a family is like a house.”
Lucas looked at her.
“A house?”
“Yes.”
“He said the walls can be repaired.”
“The windows can be replaced.”
“But if someone secretly removes the foundation...”
“The whole house eventually collapses.”
Lucas became quiet.
Because those words felt painfully accurate.
“Mom.”
She looked at him.
“I need you to tell me something.”
“What?”
“About the night you signed those papers.”
Florence immediately became nervous.
Lucas noticed.
“What happened?”
She looked away.
“I don’t remember everything.”
“Try.”
She closed her eyes.
“I remember Gwendolyn bringing tea.”
Lucas’s expression changed.
“Tea?”
“Yes.”
“She said I looked tired.”
“She said she wanted to help.”
Florence touched her forehead.
“Then I felt strange.”
“What do you mean?”
“Sleepy.”
Lucas felt a chill.
“What happened next?”
“When I woke up, the papers were already there.”
“Did you sign?”
“I thought I did.”
“You thought?”
Florence looked at him.
“My hands were shaking.”
“I couldn’t focus.”
Lucas’s heart tightened.
“Mom...”
She whispered:
“I think someone made me sign something I didn’t understand.”
The room went silent.
Lucas looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was ashamed.”
“Mom.”
“I raised you to be strong.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But I felt weak.”
Lucas held her hand.
“You were never weak.”
Florence smiled sadly.
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
She looked directly at him.
“Of losing you.”
Those words destroyed him.
Because that was exactly what Gwendolyn had used against her.
Fear.
Isolation.
Shame.
That night, Lucas stayed awake.
At 1:15 AM, he received a message from Daniel.
“Emergency. Call me.”
Lucas immediately answered.
“What happened?”
Daniel’s voice was serious.
“I checked the facility records.”
“And?”
“The admission paperwork is already prepared.”
Lucas frowned.
“Prepared?”
“Yes.”
“By who?”
Daniel paused.
Then answered:
“Your wife.”
Lucas stood.
“She already submitted documents?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She listed herself as Florence’s legal caregiver.”
Lucas felt anger rising.
“But she isn’t.”
“I know.”
“Then how did she do it?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Lucas... there’s something else.”
“What?”
“The paperwork includes a medical statement.”
“Signed by a doctor.”
Lucas already knew where this was going.
“Which doctor?”
Daniel answered:
“Dr. Samuel Voss.”
Lucas searched his memory.
He had heard the name.
A doctor who worked at several private facilities.
A doctor known for quick evaluations.
“What did he say?”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“He declared your mother mentally incapable of managing her own decisions.”
Lucas clenched his fist.
“But Amelia said that wasn’t true.”
“Exactly.”
“Then why would another doctor say it?”
Lucas looked toward Florence’s room.
Because now he understood.
They didn’t need everyone to believe the truth.
They only needed the right people to believe the lie.
One doctor.
One lawyer.
One signature.
One transfer.
That was all.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“Can we prove Dr. Voss lied?”
“Maybe.”
“What do you need?”
“Time.”
Lucas looked at the clock.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because they’re moving tonight.”
Daniel became silent.
“What makes you think that?”
Lucas looked through the window.
A black car had just stopped outside his house.
His blood turned cold.
“Because someone just arrived.”
Lucas quietly walked downstairs.
He turned off the lights.
From the window, he saw two people stepping out of the vehicle.
One was unfamiliar.
The other was not.
Richard Weaver.
His uncle.
The man who had been planning everything from the shadows.
Lucas grabbed his phone.
Started recording.
The front door opened.
Gwendolyn entered the living room.
Richard followed.
They didn’t know Lucas was there.
“You’re sure?” Gwendolyn whispered.
“Yes.”
Richard sounded confident.
“The papers are ready.”
“And the facility?”
“Prepared.”
“What about Lucas?”
Richard smiled.
“He won’t do anything.”
Gwendolyn looked nervous.
“He’s been different lately.”
Richard laughed.
“Different?”
“He’s still Lucas.”
“The boy who wants everyone to be happy.”
“The boy who avoids confrontation.”
“He won’t destroy his own marriage.”
Lucas listened.
Every word.
Every insult.
Every assumption.
Then Gwendolyn asked:
“What if he finds out?”
Richard walked closer.
“Then we remind him of one thing.”
“What?”
“That his mother’s condition is getting worse.”
“And everyone will believe the wife trying to help.”
Lucas felt his hand tighten around the phone.
Then Richard said the sentence that changed everything.
“The only thing we need now is her signature.”
Gwendolyn smiled.
“Tomorrow morning.”
Lucas stopped recording.
Because suddenly he understood.
Tomorrow was not about moving Florence.
Tomorrow was about forcing the final document.
The document that would permanently transfer everything.
The house.
The money.
The legacy.
And they planned to do it while Florence was scared and confused.
Lucas slowly stepped back.
He didn’t confront them.
He didn’t shout.
He didn’t reveal himself.
Instead, he sent one message.
To Dr. Amelia Hart.
“They’re moving tomorrow morning.”
A reply came quickly.
“What are you going to do?”
Lucas looked at the two people downstairs.
The two people who thought they had already won.
Then he typed:
“I’m going to let them believe the trap is working.”
He paused.
Then added:
“But this time, they’re the ones walking into it.”
The next morning would decide everything.
Because Gwendolyn and Richard believed they were about to steal Florence Weaver’s entire life.
They believed Lucas would stay silent.
They believed the old woman had no power.
They believed kindness was weakness.
But they forgot one thing.
Florence Weaver had spent her entire life protecting her son.
And now...
May you like
Her son was ready to protect her.
