CHAPTER 11 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE FOUNDATION

CHAPTER 11 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE FOUNDATION

The sound of tires stopping outside the clinic changed everything.

Nobody moved.

Not because they didn’t know what was happening.

Because everyone knew.

Richard had found them.

Martin Caldwell looked toward the window, and the color drained from his face.

“They’re here.”

Lucas stood immediately.

“How many?”

Martin swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

Thomas walked toward the window carefully.

Then he pulled the curtain aside slightly.

A black SUV.

Another vehicle behind it.

Two men standing outside.

Waiting.

Not visiting.

Waiting.

Lucas felt anger rise inside him.

“They followed us.”

Martin shook his head.

“No.”

Lucas looked at him.

“What?”

“They followed me.”

Silence.

The words landed heavily.

Lucas stared at the old lawyer.

“You led them here?”

Martin looked devastated.

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I was trying to stay hidden from them.”

“Then how did they find you?”

Martin closed his eyes.

“Because I was never really free.”

The clinic lights suddenly flickered.

Thomas immediately reacted.

“Everyone away from the windows.”

Lucas looked at him.

“You think they’ll attack?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The sound of a door opening downstairs answered for him.

Someone had entered.

Lucas looked at Martin.

“Is there another exit?”

Martin nodded.

“Behind the storage room.”

“Go.”

They moved quickly.

But before they reached the back hallway...

A voice echoed through the clinic.

“Thomas.”

Everyone stopped.

Richard.

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

“I know you’re here.”

Lucas’s hands tightened.

Richard continued.

“You’ve spent twelve years hiding.”

“You really thought you could come back and destroy everything?”

Thomas stepped forward.

Lucas grabbed his arm.

“No.”

Thomas looked at him.

“He needs to see me.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard spent years believing he won.”

Thomas looked toward the hallway.

“Sometimes people need to see the person they tried to bury.”

Lucas understood.

But he still didn’t like it.

Because Richard was dangerous.

People like him were most dangerous when they felt cornered.

Thomas walked into the main room.

Lucas stayed hidden.

Richard stood near the entrance.

Older.

But still confident.

When he saw Thomas, he smiled.

“I wondered how long you would stay hidden.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You knew.”

Richard shrugged.

“I suspected.”

“You survived.”

“Yes.”

“And you let everyone believe you were dead.”

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“You tried to kill me.”

Richard laughed.

“You always did have a dramatic imagination.”

“Did I?”

Thomas stepped closer.

“The brakes on my car.”

“The fake accident report.”

“The missing evidence.”

Richard’s smile faded slightly.

“You have no proof.”

Thomas looked at Martin.

“I have enough.”

Richard followed his gaze.

Then his expression changed.

“Martin.”

The lawyer looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Richard laughed.

“Sorry?”

“You finally grew a conscience?”

Martin looked at him.

“No.”

“I finally realized I was protecting the wrong person.”

Lucas watched from the hallway.

For years, Martin Caldwell had been a symbol of trust.

Now he looked like a broken man carrying years of regret.

Richard stepped closer.

“You think confessing fixes anything?”

Martin shook his head.

“No.”

“But telling the truth gives them a chance.”

Richard smiled.

“A chance?”

“You think the truth matters?”

He looked around.

“At the end of the day, people believe what benefits them.”

Lucas felt disgust.

Because that sentence explained everything.

Richard did not see people.

He saw tools.

Then Richard looked directly toward the hallway.

Lucas froze.

Had he seen him?

Richard smiled.

“Lucas.”

Everyone became silent.

“You can come out.”

Lucas slowly stepped forward.

Richard looked pleased.

“I knew you were here.”

Lucas stared.

“How?”

Richard smiled.

“Because you are your father’s son.”

“What does that mean?”

“You always think you’re smarter when you’re angry.”

Lucas walked closer.

“You kidnapped my mother.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“I protected an asset.”

Lucas’s expression changed.

“Asset?”

“That’s all she was to you?”

Richard shrugged.

“She knew where Thomas hid everything.”

Lucas looked at him.

“You hurt her.”

Richard’s face remained emotionless.

“She was going to tell you.”

“She had to be controlled.”

The room became silent.

Thomas looked at Richard with disgust.

“You admit it?”

Richard smiled.

“Why not?”

“You already know enough.”

That sentence made Lucas realize something.

Richard wasn’t trying to escape.

He was buying time.

“Where is my mother?”

Richard looked at him.

“Close.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“Where?”

“Under the Weaver estate.”

Lucas froze.

Martin looked at him.

Richard smiled.

“You thought you were looking for money.”

“You were wrong.”

“What does that mean?”

Richard answered:

“Your mother is the only person who knows how to open the vault.”

The Weaver estate.

The words echoed in Lucas’s mind.

A vault.

A hidden place.

A secret his father protected.

Everything had been there all along.

Richard continued:

“Thomas was always too sentimental.”

“He thought hiding the truth would protect everyone.”

“But he made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He trusted Florence.”

Lucas’s expression hardened.

“Don’t talk about my mother.”

Richard ignored him.

“Because Florence would rather die than reveal the location.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You underestimated her.”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

“I understood her perfectly.”

“She would sacrifice herself for her son.”

Lucas felt something cold.

Because Richard was right about one thing.

His mother would do anything to protect him.

That was why they targeted her.

Suddenly, Daniel’s voice came through Lucas’s phone.

He had been listening.

“Lucas.”

Lucas answered quietly.

“What?”

“I traced the vehicles outside.”

“And?”

“One of them belongs to Gwendolyn.”

Lucas froze.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“She’s here.”

Lucas looked toward the entrance.

Richard smiled.

Almost as if he already knew.

“Your wife wanted to see you.”

Lucas felt his chest tighten.

A few seconds later...

The clinic door opened.

Gwendolyn walked inside.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

But her eyes were different.

She looked exhausted.

Afraid.

Lucas stared at her.

The woman who betrayed him.

The woman who hurt his mother.

The woman who had been part of the plan.

“Lucas.”

Her voice was quiet.

He said nothing.

She looked at Thomas.

Then at Richard.

Then back at Lucas.

“I need to explain.”

Lucas laughed.

“Explain?”

“You helped them.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

“You helped steal from my mother.”

“I know.”

“You hurt her.”

“I know.”

“You tried to take her home.”

Gwendolyn lowered her head.

“I know.”

Lucas stared.

For the first time...

She wasn’t pretending.

She looked broken.

But Lucas had learned a painful lesson.

A person crying could still be dangerous.

“Why?” he asked.

Gwendolyn looked at him.

And whispered:

“Because Richard told me your father was responsible for my family losing everything.”

Lucas froze.

“What?”

She continued.

“I thought I was helping expose a crime.”

“I thought your family destroyed mine.”

Thomas looked shocked.

“That’s a lie.”

Gwendolyn looked at him.

“I didn’t know.”

Lucas stared.

“Then when did you find out?”

Silence.

A long silence.

Then she answered:

“Three months ago.”

“When?”

“When Richard showed me the real documents.”

Lucas’s eyes narrowed.

“After you started asking about the property?”

Gwendolyn looked away.

“Yes.”

“So you knew.”

“I was trapped.”

Lucas shook his head.

“No.”

“You chose.”

Her tears fell.

“I thought I was choosing the truth.”

Lucas looked at her.

“And you chose wrong.”

Before anyone could say more...

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Lucas!”

“What happened?”

“The police are coming.”

Lucas frowned.

“What?”

“I called them.”

Richard’s expression changed.

For the first time...

Fear.

Real fear.

Because Richard could control people.

He could manipulate documents.

He could buy silence.

But he could not control a public investigation.

Thomas looked at Lucas.

“You called them?”

Lucas shook his head.

“No.”

Then he looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s voice became serious.

“Lucas... I didn’t call them.”

Everyone froze.

“Then who did?”

Silence.

A message appeared on Lucas’s phone.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“I did.”

Lucas stared.

Another message arrived.

“You deserve to know the truth.”

Then a name appeared.

A name nobody expected.

The person who had called the police.

The person who had been watching everything.

The person who knew the entire conspiracy.

Florence Weaver.

Lucas’s face changed.

His mother.

She was alive.

And somehow...

May you like

She had escaped.
