CHAPTER 14 — THE GHOST OF THE WEAVER FAMILY

CHAPTER 14 — THE GHOST OF THE WEAVER FAMILY
The voice echoed through the dark hallway.
“Lucas.”
Every muscle in his body froze.
Because he knew that voice.
Not from yesterday.
Not from recent memories.
From childhood.
From old recordings.
From stories told by people who were no longer alive.
Thomas looked at Lucas.
“Who was that?”
Lucas didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
His mind was trying to understand something impossible.
A person who had died fifteen years ago was standing somewhere inside the house.
Or at least...
Someone using that voice.
Thomas grabbed a flashlight.
“Stay behind me.”
Lucas shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“But this time, I need to see.”
Because he was tired of ghosts.
Tired of secrets.
Tired of people deciding what truth he could handle.
He walked toward the staircase.
Each step felt heavier.
The old wooden floor creaked beneath him.
The darkness seemed to stretch around them.
Then the voice came again.
“Lucas.”
Closer.
“Come upstairs.”
Thomas suddenly stopped.
His face changed.
“What?”
Lucas looked at him.
“What is it?”
Thomas whispered:
“I know that voice.”
“Who is it?”
Thomas didn’t answer.
And that scared Lucas more than anything.
Because his father had faced Richard.
He had faced betrayal.
He had faced death.
But now...
He looked afraid.
They reached the second floor.
The hallway was empty.
No one.
Only old family portraits hanging on the walls.
Lucas’s eyes moved across them.
His grandfather.
His father.
His mother.
The entire Weaver bloodline staring back at him.
Then he noticed something.
One portrait had been moved.
A large painting of Edward Weaver.
Behind it...
A hidden door.
Lucas looked at Thomas.
“Another secret room?”
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Your grandfather loved hiding things.”
Lucas touched the door.
“It runs in the family.”
A small sound came from inside.
Someone breathing.
Lucas opened it.
And the world stopped.
Inside the room sat an old man.
Thin.
Weak.
But alive.
Lucas stared.
He recognized him immediately.
Not because he had met him often.
Because he had seen his photograph.
His grandfather’s closest friend.
The man who disappeared fifteen years ago.
The man everyone believed had died.
Henry Caldwell.
Martin Caldwell’s father.
Lucas stepped back.
“No.”
The old man looked at him.
“Hello, Lucas.”
Thomas’s expression changed completely.
“Henry.”
The old man smiled sadly.
“I knew eventually you would find this place.”
Lucas looked between them.
“Someone explain.”
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Thomas walked closer.
“You were alive?”
Henry nodded.
“For a long time.”
“Why were you hidden?”
Henry looked down.
“Because I knew the truth.”
Lucas felt anger rising.
“Everyone knows the truth except me.”
Henry looked at him sadly.
“That was never the intention.”
Lucas laughed.
“Really?”
“My entire life has been built on secrets.”
“People lied to me.”
“People manipulated me.”
“And now I find another person who was supposed to be dead.”
Henry accepted the anger.
Because he knew Lucas had earned it.
“You’re right.”
“I should have told you.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Henry looked toward the old documents on the table.
“Because your grandfather asked me not to.”
Lucas froze.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
Henry explained.
Years ago, Edward Weaver discovered that his empire had become dangerous.
Not because of enemies outside.
Because of the people inside.
Richard was ambitious.
Martin was desperate.
Others wanted control.
Edward realized the family fortune had become a weapon.
So he created a final safeguard.
A hidden agreement.
A document that would prevent anyone from controlling the Weaver assets through greed.
“The inheritance was designed to protect the family,” Henry said.
“But Richard saw it differently.”
“He saw it as something stolen from him.”
Lucas frowned.
“And you knew all this?”
Henry nodded.
“I helped Edward create the protection.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Then why did you disappear?”
Henry’s expression darkened.
“Because I discovered something.”
“What?”
“The attempt on your father’s life.”
Silence.
Lucas stepped closer.
“You know who tried to kill him?”
Henry looked at him.
“Yes.”
Everyone became still.
“Who?”
Henry looked toward the floor.
And whispered:
“Edward’s own son.”
Lucas’s heart stopped.
“Richard?”
Henry shook his head.
“No.”
Thomas looked shocked.
“Then who?”
Henry slowly raised his eyes.
“The person nobody suspected.”
A pause.
“The person everyone trusted.”
Lucas felt a cold wave.
“Who?”
Henry answered:
“Martin Caldwell.”
The room went silent.
Lucas thought he understood the story.
Richard was the villain.
Gwendolyn was the accomplice.
Martin was the coward who helped them.
But now...
Martin was something else.
Something darker.
“The documents,” Thomas whispered.
Henry nodded.
“Martin created them.”
“He manipulated Richard.”
“He convinced him he deserved control.”
Lucas stared.
“So Richard wasn’t the mastermind?”
“No.”
“He was a greedy man.”
“But Martin was a patient man.”
Henry’s voice became heavier.
“Richard wanted money immediately.”
“Martin wanted control forever.”
Lucas remembered something.
The old document.
The signature.
The hidden transfers.
Everything.
“But why?”
Henry looked at him.
“Because Martin believed the Weaver family ruined his life.”
Lucas frowned.
“Why?”
“His father served your grandfather.”
“He watched Edward build an empire.”
“He watched the Weavers gain power.”
“And he believed his own family was forgotten.”
Lucas shook his head.
“So this was revenge?”
Henry nodded.
“Revenge mixed with ambition.”
“The most dangerous combination.”
Suddenly, Lucas’s phone rang.
Daniel.
Lucas answered.
“What happened?”
Daniel’s voice was urgent.
“Lucas.”
“We found something about Martin.”
“What?”
“He wasn’t working alone.”
Lucas looked at Thomas.
“Who else?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“There’s another account.”
“Connected to Martin.”
“And the owner is...”
Lucas waited.
“Who?”
Daniel whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
Lucas froze.
“What?”
“Impossible.”
“I checked the records.”
“The account was opened twenty years ago.”
“Before Edward died.”
Lucas felt the room spinning.
Another secret.
Another layer.
Thomas looked at Henry.
“Edward was involved?”
Henry shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who opened it?”
Daniel answered:
“The account holder name is not Edward Weaver.”
A pause.
“It’s registered under another name.”
Lucas tightened his grip on the phone.
“What name?”
Daniel replied:
“Thomas Weaver.”
Everyone looked at Thomas.
The room became silent.
Lucas stared at his father.
The man who claimed he had been protecting them.
The man who had hidden for twelve years.
The man who had told him the truth.
A terrible thought appeared.
What if the truth was only another lie?
Thomas looked at Lucas.
His face was filled with shock.
“I didn’t create that account.”
Lucas didn’t answer.
Because now he didn’t know what to believe.
Henry looked at the documents.
Then suddenly whispered:
“No.”
“What?”
Henry stood up slowly.
His hands trembling.
“That account…”
“What about it?”
“It was created after Thomas disappeared.”
Lucas froze.
“After?”
Henry nodded.
“That means…”
He looked at Thomas.
“Someone used your identity while everyone believed you were dead.”
A silence followed.
Then the hidden room door slowly opened.
Everyone turned.
A figure stood in the doorway.
Holding a folder.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“You’re all looking in the wrong direction.”
Lucas’s eyes widened.
Because he recognized her.
She was someone who had disappeared from the story.
Someone nobody had questioned.
Someone who had been there before the beginning of everything.
She stepped into the light.
And said:
“My name is Eleanor Weaver.”
Lucas froze.
Because Eleanor was his aunt.
His father’s sister.
The woman everyone believed died years ago.
May you like
And she had returned with the final piece of the puzzle.
